  1. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hawkwood-fanned-fret-bass-guitar/273264849795?hash=item3f9fdab383:g:isIAAOSw0O9bF-e6 The most revolting thing I've seen on Ebay for some time.
  2. At least you can get him to make you another one!
  3. Thanks Matt, I'll bear that in mind.
  4. DHA VT1 Pro would be worth a look too. Has a great DI on it.
  5. @Briton, I think he's talking about 6-string acoustic guitar, not acoustic bass. I've used D'Addario phosphor bronze for years and years and mostly use EJ16s. I have one guitar which usually has 10s due to it's advanced age , but even that has been furnished with some EJ16s for a Bb tuning (Bb F Bb F Bb C ) I think they're the best combination of sound, price and long-life. I have tried the coated, they last 3 times as long and cost 3 times as much, but you only get that lovely brand new string feeling once every 3 sets.
  6. I think Bassace has one of these, I seem to remember it putting in an appearance at the SE Bass Bash a couple of years ago.
  7. I have an EBS2x12 Neo, which is doing much the same for me as Osiris's Tecamp does for him. At the SE Bass Bash , a few years ago now, there was a 'blind' testing of a large number of 2x12 cabs. Don't have the link anymore, but I recall that the Bergantino came out very highly regarded. There are lots of people using 2x12s on the forum and very few people who are complaining about them, so i think it's pretty hard to go wrong whichever brand you chose. Being heard in the mix has more to do with how you EQ things and how successful you are in persuading your guitarist(s) to lose the bass frequencies, than the cab.
  8. Great bit of bass playing, the drummer is just about there but the other two are nowhere near. Nice looking bass too, what is it?
  9. I can't honestly remember, it was a long time ago. I think that Rotosound were among the first to produce this particular design of string, though, and if the strings on the Ovation have been there a long time it shortens the odds. I loved the clarity and definition it gave the sound, in contrast to the flatwounds that most people were using at the time. You'll probably hate it. Kudos to The59Sound who also suggested Rotos, I missed his posting in the thread earlier. The modern version uses a different setup, which allows you to adjust the length of the winding-free portion by moving the ball end, so it fits on a variety of basses.
  10. Yes, sounds to me like Presto. I have Presto Lights on my bass, they are low tension, don't rip up your hands and will still work with mag pickups so I'm told, I just have piezo. They also make a reasonable amount of noise un-amplified.
  11. If you want to throw another maker into the mix, Rotosound Piano String Design http://www.rotosound.com/psd-bass-99/ These used to be called Superwound, I had some of these on my Yamaha BB in 1980! Good choice for an Ovation Magnum.
  12. Jack, if you're looking for a new home for the Hercules stand, I'd be happy to oblige!
  13. I own a Duesenberg Star bass. Playing it acoustically, like most of the basses in this thread, isn't enough to form an accurate opinion of what they're going to sound like plugged in. The pickups on my Duesenberg give a wide range of tones and a relatively high output: the neck pickup in particular is rich and deep, and the bridge adds a bit of definition. I have Status half-rounds on it, which are a great middle ground between flats and rounds. The new price has gone up a heck of lot since I bought mine though, and you don't tend to see a lot for sale second-hand. If I were Al.Krow I'd probably be looking at Chowny and Jack Casady, which are both great basses and excellent value for money.
  14. This is wrong. The Mondial Classic has two pickups, one conventional and one piezo. This probably gives you a much bigger range of useable sounds than two conventional pickups. I've not tried one, but Al Gare was certainly getting a great sound out of it. Sorry but I don't have any clips of the Imelda gig. I prefer to experience the event, not view it through a smartphone screen.
  15. When I saw Imelda last year, Al Gare was playing an Italia Mondial Classic. Has a piezo as well as a conventional pickup and is 34" scale.
  16. Fuzzdog (PedalParts) and Banzai music have a good selection.
  17. An alternative is to reset the 'input' on the compressor until it stays in the green zone with normal playing.
  18. Piece of cake with a VB99, though the second hand price hasn't quite dropped that far.
  19. And you should be able to pick up a nice used Yamaha BBNE2 .
  20. The Celinder J Vintage 5 that's in the For Sale forum at the moment.
  21. Probably Kiwi's Pentabuzz. Everything about it is perfect.
  22. I think the pitch shifter is better than the octaver. Give that a try?
