For those who think blues bass should be a melodic drum and never allowed above the 5th fret, and certainly never ever given a solo, and anything else is the Devil's work, I'm gonna call old Nick right out of his hole. Is there anyone on here who plays blues and has the hippy/ loony left/ revolutionary audacity to play a little bass lead? I'm not looking to start yet another bored Sunday morning exchange on the role of the bass, just to find out if any blues man or blues band is exploring the possibilities of a lead solo for the bass now and again. If so and you're that person I'd like to open a chat.
You need to check out the work of the amazing Colin Hodgkinson with Back Door, solo, Alexis Korner, many others. Here's Robert Johnson's 32-20 Blues to get you started http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVfqvIGLLp0

The only way to find out is to try it, but I wouldn't be very optimistic. It's a guitar amp with a load of pre-built EQ circuitry, it's not going to sound great for bass and you'll need to crank up the gain which will increase the distortion. I had the same thing with the Crate Power Block, but that was more usable because you could run a pre-amp into the effects return and bypass the built in guitar distortion and EQ. For not a huge amount more you should find a used Gallien Kruger MB200, there have been a couple for sale in the forum here recently.

5 String with wide string spacing at nut AND bridge
pete.young replied to No. 8 Wire's topic in Bass Guitars
I've currently got a Sire V7 5er and its great, However my fingers get cramped up on the A-D-G strings on frets 1-4.
I find one of the benefits of the 5 string is that you don't need to play down the neck end, which is great for people like me with short arms. Have you tried playing it on E-A-D strings on frets 6-9 ? -
Help required Re Fender MIJ 70's Reissue Precisions
pete.young replied to Deedee's topic in Bass Guitars
However, there were older PB70 models that were available from Japan such as OLY and RW, Black and RW with mirrored pick guard (I had one) and also Ash bodied models in either sunburst or natural with RW or Maple boards! You'll see some on eBay if you search PB70, but beware of CITES if you want a Rosewood model when it comes to importing.
Indeed, I have a 'P' serial number (2002 - 2004?) with a natural ash body and a maple neck, but it has dots rather than blocks. It has a 'B' profile neck, somewhere inbetween a Jazz and a traditional P bass shape. -
The 'Tanglewood' link seems to be wrong. Here's a good'un ... Very playable and sounds surprisingly good. -
Set it up to behave like a 6 string bass through an amp?
Absolutely yes. If you get hold of a copy of the software that goes with it, you can transpose it down an octave, very straight forward. You can also experiment with pickup choice and placement, though you don't get bass pickups there are a lot of things you can do with it. Very versatile.

I'm pretty sure that the FC1010 is a programme change controller and doesn't play notes. I have a Roland FC300, which doesn't either.

OLP MM22 plus a pre-amp change?

The nicest Precision I've ever played was HappyJack's '65. If I had an option to own one, I'd take it.

I love my EBS Neo 2x12 so much that when I stupidly sold it in favour of something I thought was going to be better, I had to go out and buy another one!

I'm using eneloop and 7-day-shop's own brand AAs, AAAs and PP3s. But not for bass preamp batteries. They seem to be lasting literally years, even for basses I play a lot.

Can anyone suggest a good place to sell harps?
pete.young replied to alyctes's topic in General Discussion
For folk harps or celtic harps you could try Hobgoblin Music. -

The manual for the Multi-amp should include a section listing the MIDI functions which it implements - this is a condition of using the MIDI standard.
Hmm. If you listen to the original version by Peggy Lee you will hear that the bass phrase in each successessive chorus is subtly different from the preceding one. And they raise a semitone each chorus. It seems simple but it's not easy to play. This version sounds how I would probably play it if I was confronted by an open mike singer, ie not very well. Sorry Pete, I'm a bit grumpy this Sunday morning.
Sorry you don't like it, I thought it was pretty good. I'll be grumpy right back at ya and say that the original version was Little Willie John in 1956! Knocks Peggy Lee into a cocked hat if you ask me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y27vBA68Zyk

I've always thought that 'Fever' would be a great choice for a bass accompaniment, and this is marvellous playing by Tal Ronen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLTDkiKVxwY

With good reason. They are excellent at what they do, and everyone loves that music! I'm a huge fan.
