I couldn’t get one of my basses to get an even consistent volume across the four strings with piezo, no matter how much I tried. So I put the cheapest mag, a Schaller on. The result is amazing and I get complimented on a lot of jazz gigs for the clarity of the notes. Stingray Pete is a Schaller user. He likes his. There are ‘better’ more expensive ones but why pay more?

Double basses are now down from 4 to 3, having just sold my Martin. And then the aim is to get down to one as there is a massive clearout in the house in anticipation of a downsize. Still too many amps though, as nothing seems to be selling at the mo. -
Oh sure, it’s dead basic but, as you say, a start. They say the trick to playing ‘challenging’ timing is to read slightly ahead of your playing.
-
Will this help the timing? A low tech solution perhaps😀

Anyone used the 800 for double bass yet? Love the 10-2 Array cab and gassing for a match. Puma 500 at present.

The Rose and Crown, North Parade, Oxford. Jazz in the courtyard right through the year. When it’s wet or cold they roll out an awning and light patio heaters. Great cosmopolitan crowd. Best pub in GB, Andrew, the owner/landlord likes his jazz, free beer and bangers and chips at the end of the gig. Always a gig to look forward to.

Sounds like the local Rotary club.

But at the time of Time Out and Time Further Out (I had them both) the Brubeck Quartet were quite conservative and there was a lot of anchoring going on. For instance when Joe Morrello was soloing in Take Five, Brubeck vamped under him. Later, when they were more familiar with the stuff they were able break free. By the time the Prog groups cam along they were able to handle all sorts of time sigs with ease.

I shared a dressing room with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee once. Does that count?

It’s the drums that make you tap your feet, the bass that makes you swing your hips. To my knowledge it’s only Penguins that tap their feet as a come-on.

We’ll soon be contemplating downsizing, so I don’t want to make the move with four double basses in tow. Here is my Martin Solo Bass. This one of the top of the range basses based on Martin’s 3/4 model but with the upper bouts reduced in width to get better access to all parts of the fingerboard. Needless to say this bass sounds superb. It was built in March 2015 and has had quite an easy life since. It comes with a gigbag and I can fit a Fishman Full Circle pickup if required. Now do the maths:- New from Martins this would cost around £13k. It is at present advertised on a double bass website for £9.5k. I’m offering it on this forum for £8.5k, no offers. It represents an amazing opportunity for someone who is ready to upgrade to a top class instrument.

I haven’t used this combo for 20 years and goodness knows how old it is. But it is well liked on the forums and is quite a rare beast, I’m told. Anyway, it’s in very nice condition and perfect apart from just the slightest scratch on two of the pots. I’ve just had it out to play and it makes a great solid sound, free of speaker rattles. Nice and compact, perfect for home practice or even gigs although might not handle stadiums. Best to come see and collect if interested. I’m in Oxfordshire, between Banbury and Chipping Norton. Now crazy price of £60

Jacob Collier Changing the rules of Music!!!
bassace replied to KingPrawn's topic in General Discussion
Some bits dead boring, pretentious. Others very good, with a lot of energy. The real stars were the Orchestra. How Jules Buckley got them back under control after the geezers in nightshirts went off on one is quite miraculous. Great arrangements but I’m afraid Collier’s voice isn’t quite up to his ambitions. -

He’s on TV from the Proms Friday evening. Should be good. -
dood, It’s possible to cut a top hat into the base of the cab but that would entail getting into the innards to make sure the damping material wasn’t unduly disturbed. As with a previous Wizzy10 I knocked up a shelf for the cab to sit on. It’s located by its weight (21 lbs) and corner notches. Here’s a pic of the underside. You can find the bracket online.

Yes, they are indeed great cabs. Using two, whose principal function is to get the cab closer to ear level, is perhaps an under use of the bottom cab. I found when I did this that the two cones induced feedback more readily than using just one. But there are definite advantages to be gained by raising the cab. As well as bringing closer to ear level you get get improved clarity by decoupling the cab from the stage, especially when it’s carpeted. For a lot of in-and-out gigs I simply stick the cab on the floor but I have just knocked up a stand, using a modified speaker tripod. When I get time I’ll see how it performs with a mic mixed it. Should resist feedback very well.
