    BBC TV is like a bunch of Oxbridge graduates in charge of a third rate covers band that plays Agadoo and the Birdy Song etc. And then repeats the whole lot in the second set. And the next morning.

    I played a Jazz in 1963 it was already owned by the band I joined. Then in 65 I bought my own second hand for £100 through Melody Maker small ads.

    When our skiffle group became the rhythm section of our first band we decided we should dispense with the washboard and get some drums. That was in 1958. So we all got on the bus and went to see Steve, not to audition him but to see his drums. They were a gorgeous red set. I played with him just three weeks ago, he’s a great drummer playing a Drumright Masterworks red set.

    Don’t forget Jim Fielder of Blood Sweat and Tears. And the bloke behind the Tops (Jameson? I’m no expert) was rated too. And yes, MM was the guvnor mag. NME was pretty rubbish in those days. Musos read Crescendo, I got a mention in 1967.

    Plus one for the Puma. I have a spare that stays under my passenger seat but the main Puma has never been in any trouble. Luv ‘em.

    Ah yes, the Puma. I bought a 500 a few years ago from this forum. At the time it was Mike Arnopol’s favourite amp, highly recommended. It is a small amp with great clarity and a responsive eq section. Together with an FDeck HPF it has been my No1 amp. I like it so much that I sold a Clarus, prefering the Puma’s clarity. I have a second one that sits under my passenger seat as a back up - never needed to date. Two weeks ago I bought a Genzler Magellan on this forum. I hoped it might render the outboard HPF unnecessary but, having gigged it twice and a third on Thursday I’m not yet completely convinced. I’ll try it with the HPF. But for the time being I can really recommend the Puma. They’re cheap as chips on BC amp sales at the moment. Can’t understand why they are hanging around.

    Use any (most) amp and stick a Felix on top, go into the effects return of the amp and bingo. Felix has two independent channels, each with three positions of input impedance, sweepable HPF or notch and a comprehensive eq section. I’d take a photo but I’ve just loaded for a gig tomorrow.

    The only German blonde my wife lets me take out. As part of my on-going declutter I’m offering my nice ply honey blonde bass. I bought it from Peter Tyler a dozen years ago and although it isn’t labelled Peter reckons it’s one of the basses brought over from Germany in the late 50s/early 60s. It has an unusually slim neck which makes it easy to get your hands round. There are a few dings suffered over the years but it still presents itself well, as I hope the photo shows. It is fitted with Spiro medium strings and the trueness of the fingerboard is demonstrated by the buzz-free string height of 7mm to 10mm. Offered with Underwood pickup and soft cover, this bass has a nice acoustic sound and amps very impressively. It’s at a generous price of £600 and I regret I can’t entertain lower offers. I’m just outside Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire if you would like to see/hear this nice instrument.

    That is a fine piece of kit. I’ve got a few amps and cabs which come and go. But my Shuttle is a keeper, especially for the quick carry in gigs. Stuff seems to be moving quite slowly at the mo but this shouldn’t hang around for long. GLWTS

    I couldn’t get one of my basses to get an even consistent volume across the four strings with piezo, no matter how much I tried. So I put the cheapest mag, a Schaller on. The result is amazing and I get complimented on a lot of jazz gigs for the clarity of the notes. Stingray Pete is a Schaller user. He likes his. There are ‘better’ more expensive ones but why pay more?

    Double basses are now down from 4 to 3, having just sold my Martin. And then the aim is to get down to one as there is a massive clearout in the house in anticipation of a downsize. Still too many amps though, as nothing seems to be selling at the mo.

    Oh sure, it’s dead basic but, as you say, a start. They say the trick to playing ‘challenging’ timing is to read slightly ahead of your playing.
