1.
Bryn Terfel is for the Cheltenham music festival, not the Cheltenham jazz festival.
Sorry, my big mistake. Note to self: engage brain before operating iPad.
2. Bryan Terfel - WTF? But Chick Corea with Eddie Gomez will definitely be worth a punt.
3. They really are great amps, I have two. Great price, good luck with the sale
4. Too bloody right! Probably more important than musicality is a muso's integrity. In over fifty years of playing I've never been let down. Mind you, way back I had a gig on a frosty night 60 miles away and my brother's band were supporting the Stones locally. I was all for going to brother's gig until my Dad gave me the biggest 'lecture' of my life. I've never forgotten that lesson. Ever.
5. In pre-Internet times I played in a big band. The man had to make a minimum of 54 phone calls per gig. 18x3.
6. I own both a Crazy8 (compo) and a OneTen. The Ten kicks a serious amount of butt and I have used it on several outdoor gigs to great effect during the year. Also a lot of loud indoor gigs. But I've found that it's quite a dark speaker and I find myself losing mid articulation. If I'm not seeking a lot of volume I prefer the 8 for its tonal range. Tomorrow I have a gig in a carpeted room that will really soak up the mids so I'm going to try a Wizzy 10. Might put the 8 in the motor just in case tho'.
7. Remember, all those great bass sounds that you hear and strive to emulate have come to you from the studio, either live or recorded, via some high end equipment and in good acoustics. Getting your sound out in a live situation involves a whole load of compromises, not least the way you get your instrument to cut through the sounds put out by the other instruments. Drums and keys will provide the biggest challenges and you will find yourself using more mids than you might normally prefer. Get a sound that works and above all enjoy your music. MBOL is seldom achieved on the stage.
8. That sounds very encouraging and hope it works well live. In my experience mid-range honk from piezos is often exaggerated. It can always be taken down with some mid reduction, that's when you hear it at home. But you might find that on a gig you need that mid back again and surprisingly you don't notice the honk. Funny that. The J Tone seems like a winner, especially now the Underwood seems to be difficult if not impossible to find these days.
9. Good to see that on sale. I 'moved it on' quite a few years now. I fitted the attenuator when I was using it as an extension cab with a GK MBS 150 and I wanted to back off some of the volume. Good quality SWR gear . GLWTS
10. Yes, looks good. There's extra banding on the ribs that I don't usually see on Czechs (someone correct me?). The strings are SpiroMitts but the tail silks look unfeasibly long. There is a bit of scope to shorten the tail wire so the tailpiece sits lower on the body. That could help the silks to clear the bridge. Bit strange though. Are the strings 4/4 by any chance?
11. Is your car a hatchback? Sorry don't know hyundais very well. If it is you'll need a cover with at least three handles down the front: one at the top, one near the bridge and one at the bottom. I didn't see those on the eBay one, although £50 looks a great price. I've got two cases from Thomas Martin. They are strong, light and have the handles in the right places. And they're not expensive.
12. Don't be afraid. It'll be the best introduction to playing jazz and you'll get a lot of enjoyment/satisfaction from the experience. You're very welcome to PM me if any problems come up, or something you need better understanding of.
13. Keith, have you still got that gizmo that looks inside the bass body? I may have a bass bar 'issue' in my EUB.
14. 10.00 til 5.00, Keith. Would be good to have you with us.
15. I changed my name from Von Trapp when I was in my early teens.
16. Geoff it would be great to see you! Plenty of good basses for you to play.
17. I'll be bringing my Kolstein travel bass to add to the EUB collection. And bring anything you want to sell - bass-related of course. Looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday. Not long now.
18. After some bouts of indecision I have decided that I must move this great cab on. Designed and built by Mike Arnopol in USA it's a ground breaking design for double bass. As its name implies it has 4 5" drivers and the same number of tweeters. It's rated at 8 ohms and you could get a lot more details if you Google Mike's website. It comes with a Roqsolid cover. I'd really prefer to meet up or you'd be welcome to come to my place in Oxfordshire for a demo. If your interested please PM me with your email address and I'll send some photos. This is a rare cab in UK.
19. I was at boarding school, on a choral scholarship at Chichester so does that make me a professional singer? Stretching it a bit perhaps. And I played violin.
20. The definition of a gentleman is someone who owns a banjo but doesn't play it. I wonder whether that can be applied to guitars.
