  1. I'd be very ecumenical about it and tell him to go forth and multiply. If he doesn't get it just kick him in the goolies.
  2. [quote name='bassman7755' timestamp='1432458487' post='2781558'] Seriously dont bother with elaborate solutions, just use this stuff. [/quote] I've just bought a Puma 500, as light as, and some of that was included in the packaging.
  3. I tried one once and although it played like a small 3/4 the sound was unbelievably thin. I'd agree that if portability is the issue an EUB would be the way to go.
  4. No, why not keep it going for a while; I know how you must feel, Sarah. I sold one of mine a few years ago and in all the euphoria of acquiring new ones I lost sight/touch of it completely, which now irks me. Very soon I'll be selling one of mine again and this time I'll keep in touch with the buyer - and try not to cry when it goes. DBs are like family, they have feelings too.
  5. To be fair, Tim, I haven't been in the same band but a series of bands. In between I freelance and find that until recently, due to health issues, I would play with about a dozen bands in a year. Is it because I play DB, Jazz, or a mixture of both, plus the ability to read. Anyway I suppose I should consider myself fortunate and perhaps shouldn't have posted such an arrogant previous comment.
  6. Blimey, that's the downside of forums; everything is dissected and analysed to within an inch of its life. At school we got some guys together, formed a band and got some gigs. The weaker players fell by the wayside and we just got better. And it's how it works for me fifty years later. I just go out and play gigs, don't for a minute stop to think why I do it.
  7. Way back when we booked ourselves a fortnight of gigs and based ourselves in some caravans just along the coast from St Ives. I can't remember too much but we played on a stage made of fish crates at Newlyn fish market, RN Culdrose, Lamorna Cove and lots more. We used to get up just before noon and make our way to the Sloop on St Ives harbour. Happy days, a great place.
  8. Some phrases that fill me with dread when I turn up for a gig:- The acoustics here are great. You wont need an amplifier. We've got a very good piano. The members like the band to use it.
  9. Too right, too bloody right. Parasites all of them. Well brought up, Bilbo, I feel better now.
  10. Yes, it's a pity there aren't more steam pianos. I work with one only once in a blue moon. There's a very nice full size grand at the Castle Studio, Wellingborough which all the piano players love. When we fetched up there for a gig not long ago it was being tuned. The guy proudly said that the piano was tuned every time it was moved. To which our drummer completely let the side down by saying 'well, don't keep moving it then!' - drummers. There is just one small downside, apart from the out of tuners, if a band isn't used to working with pianos regularly they might not have the mics/mounts. The piano strings present quite a wide area to mic evenly.
  11. What the fcku is a BBCode? Time was when I could simply copy and paste. Could the mod please get all this imagery out of my ad. BTW, thanks but my head hurts.
  12. I've given up the struggle to put pics on BC but will be happy to send them via personal email if interested. The external dimensions are:- H2000xmaxW730xmaxD500.
  13. [quote name='Beedster' timestamp='1438956057' post='2838968'] Hiya mate, after a 'moment' with my ageing blonde on my back and a rather drunk gentleman in a dark street the other night (sounds like a Tom Waits song doesn't it), I did consider buying another a hard case, but reflected on the fact that my previous case didn't permit both it and player to be in the same car at the same time! In short it was huge! Do you have dimensions for yours? I'd quite like some pics also if possible. I could get to Oxford way week of 17th if it works out. Cheers Chris [/quote] Hi Chris Could you pl PM your email address and I'll get some pics taken later today, plus dimensions, although no bass case is ever going to be very small.
  14. [quote name='dudi8' timestamp='1438950665' post='2838919'] pics? can you post it? [/quote] If you could PM your email I could send some pics. And I suppose I could post if your letterbox is big enough. I would need a contribution towards shipping.
  15. Not to be confused with the bulky Styrofoam cases, this one is made of GRP with plush lining and padding. It's wheeled. It's quite slimline inasmuch as any DB case can be and provides excellent protection. Its shape is like those old cello cases and is suitable for a 3/4 DB. It has been all over Europe with me and has flown to Lanzarotte and back - yes. Can be collected from Oxfordshire or could meet up but best bring your bass to make sure it fits. £350
  16. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, Phil. I'm still keeping one. It's great for gigs.
  17. I am selling a couple of my DB cabs to make way for new gear. They are both designed and built by Mike Arnopol and imported from USA. As the title says, they are double bass specific and have a big following over there. The MA 45 is a ported cab with 4x 5" 8 ohm speakers. Coupled to an amp it gives a clear sound with minimal boom, even if driven hard. The Rev has one and he's very pleased with his. It has a Roqsolid cover and is in immaculate condition. It would cost £700 to import it. Yours for £450 Crazy 8 is a minute cab that outperforms its size. As the name implies it has an 8" 8ohm driver. It suffered a bit of damage to one of its corners but it has been repaired. Its performance is unaffected. It comes with a padded bag for transport. Because it's not quite perfect the price is SORRY, NOW SOLD. I will respond to all PMs with photos or any other info that may be required. Will demo in Oxfordshire to interested purchasers.
  18. This couple were in trouble; they hadn't spoken to each other for years. When they finally went to Relate the counsellor sat them down and took out a bass from a cupboard and played a solo........ because everyone talks during the bass solo
  19. I've just caught up with 'I've Been Wrong Before' that I remember her recording in 1965. It's a moving song written by Randy Newman and a bit short at 2.12 mins. Find it on the Tube, there's a particularly great live TV version.
  20. I'm ambivalent about bass solos. If I'm playing in the seven piece Dixie band I'll probably get a couple of choruses in the last number when everyone has a feature. But it'll be at a punishingly fast tempo so all I can do is play it for laughs a bit, with no satisfaction at all. But a lot of the time I play with trios and quartets and, especially with the former, I'll have to do my bit of load-sharing. So in almost every number I'll have perhaps a chorus, half a chorus, or a middle eight according to what the tune is doing and all done by eye contact. PS, jazz double bass if you haven't twigged.
  21. As a jazzer, I'd say you need a good drummer to be able to swing, and a very good drummer to be able to shine. I've just consulted my little black book where I write names down and see that I've played with 52 drummers so far. Most were OK.
