  1. Brother's band played support in '63 at Reading Town Hall. And they used his home-built PA. Just saying.
  2. As a musician I dislike the misuse of the word 'crescendo'. As in 'rising to a crescendo'.
  3. I've been doing some stuff with a nice jazz trio - gtr/bass/drums. Tomorrow we'll be at Blenheim Palace, Water Terrace Cafe. Last week we were back there at the Orangery doing posh lunches. And it's only 15 mins down the road. Nice.
  4. I use iRealPro for jazz gigs. I can call up 1300 tunes in chords form - lyrics and melodies (top line) are copyrighted, chord sequences aren't. It'll also transpose quickly if the guys on the front want a different key. It also does backing tracks and other stuff for practising which I don't use. There are Android and iOS versions available. I use an iPad Air on a music stand - haven't shelled out for the clamp version yet. It's great for freelance/dep gigs.

  7. Not quite stopped yet but perhaps coming soon. It's my back. This morning I helped Mrs B muck out three stables, turning the beds over and carrying full buckets of water. Then I dug over one of the vegetable beds and some other medium/heavy lifting. But can I stand upright on stage for 2x1hr sets without getting excruciating backpain? Can I buggery. So I've just left my first call band, a band I've been in for 15 years and I'm turning down a lot of freelance work later in the year. I've got one gig a week for the next five weeks and after that I'll have to see how things go. I'm going to miss the gigs, the chat, the laughs. Oh, and another thing: looking at recent photos of live gigs I look very old, embarrassingly old. I'm 74 now. I feel a lot better now I've got that off my chest. Bit like AA I suppose.
  8. Back in the day, when Mrs B and I got married things were a bit difficult and she was a bit miffed at having to decline party invites etc because I had a gig. Actually I had a weekend residency which blotted out a lot of together time. So I saw the writing on the wall and gave up playing for a few years. Trouble was we were not very flush and I really needed the cash but I new what I had to do. Bang up to date and I really think that soon I'll have to give up gigs - old age/health issues. When I mentioned it the other day it decame apparent that she rather valued the time I was away and she could have a bit of time to herself. So, go figure.
  9. I had two at different times and sold them both because I didn't always have access to front of house - at which the mic excels. Not at all advisable to use with back line. There are some considerably cheaper DPA clones about on eBay and other sources.
  10. Spot's great. I've just had some dots through the post for an upcoming gig. My reading's OK-ish but it was good to get a crib off the original versions. I recently got a pair of Bluetooth headphones and am looking around for speakers. But could anyone point me in the direction of gizmo I can put on the front of my hifi to get a signal from my iPad. Any suggestion gratefully received.
  11. Interesting, that. The last time I saw Danny was at Cornbury a couple of years ago. The sound people completely destroyed his sound. Remember, most of those great bass tones are generated in the recording studio in perfect acoustics and with a very nice mic. And then we all get frustrated when we can't reproduce those sounds in a live settings, usually with iffy acoustics and a piezo pickup that we hope won't feedback too much.
  12. In the sixties the must-read was the Melody Maker. The opposition was NME which was not cool at all. MM was still quite jazzy which was very much the music of day. But there was still room for burgeoning pop/rock scene. Remember the Beatles were just breaking and there was lot of stuff about them, plus the Liverpool groups. The ads inthe back were great too: musicians wanted and the bands' itineraries made interesting reading. Georgia Fame and the Blue Flames would be playing 40 gigs each month. I bought an EBO for £90 out of the small ads. Exiting times to live in - and all signposted by the MM. And can I just mention Crescendo which was a monthly mag for musos. I'm looking at a copy right now dated May 66 with a photo of Sonny Rollins on the cover - and I get a mention inside.

  17. This vid should be shown to every drummer who asks 'what do you want me to do in your bass solo?' A great bass solo enhanced by sympathetic drums.
  18. Have a bump on me. I used to have Meinel for a number of years - admittedly carved. It served me well and I rather miss it. Meinel quality is good and their basses have good projection. They are very well constructed.
  19. Once Upon a Time in America by Enrico Morricone is great and complements the film very well - IMHO
  20. I call myself a double bass player but I'd never dis a BG player because both instruments are equally relevant and I had a lot of BG fun in the sixties and seventies.
  21. There have been instances of buttons not pressed, leads not plugged in etc, but when I was playing trombone I took the slide apart at home to give it a clean and oil. When I got to the gig and opened the case I had only half a trombone. Hm.
  22. The tailpiece and tail wire will be in tension roughly as above but the neck will be in compression as a result of the forces exerted by the strings. There will also be a bending moment where the neck joins the body. It will be acting as a cantilever. Sorry to be a tad pedantic.
