1. If only everything in life was as dependable as an OBBM lead.................
2. So how long have you been on just three strings? You seem to be missing a G.
3. I do quite a lot of work with sax players who double on soprano. In one of the bands (a 'reading' one) we sometimes get a sop duet - one straight one curly. You've got to have very good players to stop the whole thing descending into farce, the intonation has to be spot on and the harmonies chosen wisely. I was initially put off the sop by hearing recordings of Sidney Bechet - far too much vibrato. Then when I went too see John Coltrane in London he whipped out a sop and played My Favorite Things. Revelation! and I have liked the instrument ever since, as long as the vibrato is kept well under control. There, I've managed to get through the post without mentioning Kenny Gee. ...........Oh bu**er, I just have.
4. 'Bit like owning a banjo really. A gentleman is someone who owns a banjo but never plays it. Same with double bass slap.
5. And some of them have been hanging about for a long time, months and months.
6. Yes, they are expensive compared to others. Tony is a very pleasant and patient sort of guy, though. I went to see him, spent most of the day, he made me lunch and I took a bass home on appro. Didn't keep it and have felt a bit guilty ever since but business is business, I suppose, and it could have been an expensive lunch.
7.
I have no experience of either but i am told Thwaites are helpful and Contrbasse overpriced.
Exactly!
8. Fair question and apologies for my initial vagueness/laziness. The bass is a Professor Standard with a flat back and German spruce front, violin corners, bridge adjusters and an Underwood pickup installed. The Upton price is $5,000 basic and by the time you've got all the bits, (Upton even charge for strings), the bass is shipped over and duty is paid the cost here would be £5,000. I've just worked this all out in detail and it confirms my rule-of-thumb that within that sort of price range the dollar price is equal to the GBP price paid to get it over here. If you look at the pics on the Upton site mine is very similar to the one shown on the second line down of the small pics but without the hat peg tuners.
9. I had a Steinberger and while it was a nicely made and set up bass I didn't like playing on a stand at all. It was all too rigid and the transition from double bass was not a great success. I've played 'free standing' EUBs and found them quite ok in comparison.
10.
There's something rather elegant about holding the Yorkshire Bass in Canterbury
Yes, only in England!
11. I couldn't get to the bash because I'm with the band transport and won't be up there until just before gig time. There was a bash at Northampton some time ago in a convenient hotel with a large car park. Bit more central. Any interest in that? At least it's closer to Canterbury.
12.
How about a Northern upright bash on Saturday 7th April Bassace has a gig that night in Boston Spa, it's just off the A1 near Wetherby. I could have a word with the venue or find another maybe in Harrogate Sorry to hijack Chris' thread, I'll start a new topic. 13.
The last time I was in Footes (about 3 years ago I think) they had 10 or 15 double basses in the basement.
You must have gone on a re-stocking day, the most I've seen in Footes recently were four basses. I'm afraid Footes are a shadow of their former selves, dealing in percussion a lot these days. When they were in Denman Street they were the go-to bass shop. I first went to buy a bass (£45) in the late fifties and got talking to a very nice tall black guy. It wasn't 'til I left that the sales assistant told me he was Ray Brown. OK, I've mentioned this before but indulge me. I bought a Meinel some time ago that was ex-Footes and it was a very nice bass; regret selling it, as I do any bass. There is also Thwaites at Watford who have some nice entry level basses on their site.
14.
I'm free so far that evening shall we resreve front row tables Geoff?
Look 'ere, I'm not having a load of double bass experts in the front row at my gig.
15.
I looked at these when I was shopping around and thought they looked beautiful. The price tag is well outside of my league at the moment though (pending a knock on the door by Nadia Sawalha from Heir Hunters telling me my liong lost Uncle Nobby died intestate and I have inherited the lot. Good ol' Nobby!).
Strange, Bilbo, he was asking about you a year or so ago.
16. The actual flying bit is not too difficult as long as you have a flight case and the bass is prebooked. I have found airline staff very helpful and it's strange to see the bass going through the x-ray machine. I put my G-K through and it looked just like any other strange electronic device with the curly wires and all that! The difficulty comes when you get to the other end; try to get a flight case on a taxi or even a coach when you get an arsey driver.
17.
Hi ya bassace. Can you tell us the width of the upper bout? How does it perform for arco. And finally I notice that you have a Tom Martin bass. How does the upton compare in your opinion. Cheers.
Upper bout is 21.5". It's quite good under the bow - I say that because it's on Spiros and, as you know, they are not the best bowing strings. The sound is less coloured than the Martin, very even across the strings less 'thump' but with a lot more sustain. It sings better if you see what I mean.
18.
Fancy organising a minibus Geoff? I bet there'd be a few of us from Yorkshire would love to see the Upton and meet Bassace face to face
I'm at Boston Spa 7th April. Coach tours to see ancient monuments are quite popular round here - you could also see the Upton!
19. Advert is now posted, TPJ. Yes, it is a gorgeous instrument.
20. I'm offering my Upton Prof for sale. I had Uptons send it over in 2007, Opus no 25. It is a large 3/4 size, flatback with great projection. It is a much admired instrument by all those who see and hear it and the only reason I'm selling it is because I'm about to order another Upton. Apart from a few almost invisible indentations where my finger nail has come off the E string the condition is pristine. Upton's setup is superb, the bass played well straight out of the box and no further setup was needed. Strung with Spiro Mittels on GDA and Evah Pirazzi on E. It has a thickly padded Upton cover. This is a seriously good bass offered at the reasonable price of £3500. Rather than take a poor photo, I am linking Upton's description here and please note the shade of this bass is darker than the one shown, more dark coffee. PM me for any further info and all inspections welcome. http://www.uptonbass...or-Double-Bass/
21. http://www.uptonbass...or-Double-Bass/ Sorry, trying to cancel this but it won't. Well, now I'm in I might as well say that I'm selling my Upton Professor, link as above. More in the For Sale section later. They really shouldn't let novices like me loose on laptops.
22.
Try 'Blues and the Abstract Truth' by Oliver Nelson
Plus one! This head/choruses/head thing is nothing new, of course. It informed most of the modern jazz - incl bebop, and even Kind of Blue is very much h/ch/h. I very much applaud those who are doing their best to break out of that particular mould. But that is very 'project' based and requires quite a fair amount of rehearsal. So there can be a danger that spontaneity is lost. One of the bands I play in is a five piece but it's still reading all the way from charts that come from the leader who spends an amazing amount of time arranging. Great fun, but equally, it's great to do a pickup gig with some good musicians and do the h/ch/h thing and get a great kick out of it.
