1. or you could rent one for a while. thwaites, healey or peter tyler could help here. on a broader front, i have just got a copy of ''about the double bass - a players guide' by peter tyler. it's a bit elementary in places but a must for anyone contemplating getting 'into' the double bass. it's £20 from peter at www.tylerbasses.co.uk. michael, do talk to peter; he's a very helpful guy and lives at maidenhead. btw, sorry for all the lower case but the left arm is still in plaster. x-ray scheduled for next thursday.
 2.

RESPECT!
 3. After a lot of hassle and delay from Parcelfarce my PJB Flightcase finally arrived from Benebass. The packaging was immaculate, by far the best I've received. Good communications were maintained between us during this fraught time and all ended up well. So thanks and well done Benedict.
 4. i've never made the long journey but i know from the forum that bass merchant is held in high esteem. so sad, but all the best for the future.
 5. you'll get plenty of work (trad!!!!??) if you acquire one but I've never been drawn. although i used to play trombone i doubt whether i've still got the lungs for one. a bass (not bari) sax, now there's a class instrument.
 6.
Good point! I'll have to roll it back to about 1977 and have BAS515T instead...
that would do it!
 7.
Who's got BA55IST then?
can't do because i (cap) doesn't exist so it can't be confused with 1.
 8. he had to explain the bass player's role to dumb dermot.
 9.
????????
i wonder whether english is their first language.
 10.
Not so many now. I could only find BA55 AAA I'm a bit puzzled by this: http://www.bossreg.c...l?plate=BA55ACE . Is yours up for sale, or are they a bunch of chancers? I am fairly certain I saw BA55 CAB on a taxi in Victoria Street a year or so ago.
i'm more than a bit puzzled, pete! mine is certainly not for sale, so how come these guys are advertising it at |£10,200?! looks good on a lambo, though.
 11. there are still some ba55 numbers available at dvla. i could find my name (rog) and initials (rad) but i'll settle for ace. sorry about lower case.
 12. remember, the early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese. oh, and don't use coax leads to the speakers there are still daft people who do and don't take kindly to gentle advice.
 13.
I've been playing for several year in duet with a great friend of mine : hard (every concert is like a challenge ) but so pleasent ! Our name is "A Contre Voix" Greetings from France ! jeff
just caught up with this, jeff. very nice indeed!
 14. the ray brown album is great. we had it in the flat when it came out in the sixties. for a long time i've been wanting to find out what tuning he used but so far to no avail.
 15.

i understand your position
 16. oh, ha ha, bloody ha HJ! actually the day before the arm business i did a heavy duty all star jazz gig with some very good musos. i was using my super flight which i'd just got to grips with and it sounded great. one of the saxes referred to the 'rolls royce' rhythm section. so i thought that i'd try the flight for smaller stuff. having one arm out doesn't stop me buying toys. but thanks for your concern.
 17.
What about the pink oboe?
how dare you, sir. be more discreet in future.
Roger, really really sorry to hear this ... and I can't even offer to dep for some of those gigs! Are you plaster-casted up to your elbow, or do they have a more user-friendly solution these days? Out in time for Xmas? I was trying to think of a musical instrument which could be played with one hand, and all I came up with were harmonica (badly) and piano (sort of). Not good.
thanks, hj. yup, right up and round the elbow and it's quite heavy. slept quite well last night and when i woke up i had to invent a whole new wardrobe of one-armed shirts. i had a dutch nurse who did me up and she was quite gorgeous. we had the what do you do/play the double bass conversation and she told me that her son played the cello. she could tell what mood he was in by the way he played. very nice.
 18. i'd favour a hybrid over a ply, in fact a hybrid amped could be better than a solid in some circumstances. i gig a solid regularly and don't have any qualms at all, although it mostly travels in my car. it got knocked over on stage a while ago and i claimed on my free mu insurance. imo, feedback in a hybrid not an issue.
 19.
Silly question maybe, but I've never broken a limb - just how painful is it?
nor me previously, cos. it's ok until i try to rotate my wrist then it's agony. also the sling weighing on my neck is a bit painful but overall the whole thing is ok. it's just bloody frustrating not being able to do many things that i used to take for granted. and, of course, no gigs; that hurts. and you will notice i can't do caps.
 20.
More helpfully, I found this review of AER Amp One and upright bass on TB http://www.talkbass....tml#post6455522
thanks clarky, looks very interesting for db but with gigs cancelled i'll reconsider next year.
 21.
Bad luck, swift recovery! But... 'one of the wife's horses..? Chipping Norton..? Oxfordshire..?' Do you know Dave, Rebekah and Jeremy by any chance..?
i've seen them around. i was standing next to jc in the fish and chips queue the other day. miserable and scruffy individual. and aesthetically challenged ? top gear must have a very good makeup person.
 22. actually, i did know what a transient is, and i bet clarky does too. i first encountered the term in the fifties when hifi was coming on the scene. yours in lower case
 23. got kicked by one of the wife's horses yesterday afternoon. left arm broken so no double bass for at least six weeks and three bands will have to find deps for a total of 15+ gigs. when i get playing again my fingers will be all soft so i'll have to go through the blisters thing. aaaaaargh. yours in lower case.
