SOLD - Phil Jones (PJB) Flightcase BG-150 Combo - £375 Posted
bassace replied to benebass's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
oh, ha ha, bloody ha HJ! actually the day before the arm business i did a heavy duty all star jazz gig with some very good musos. i was using my super flight which i'd just got to grips with and it sounded great. one of the saxes referred to the 'rolls royce' rhythm section. so i thought that i'd try the flight for smaller stuff. having one arm out doesn't stop me buying toys. but thanks for your concern. -
What about the pink oboe?
how dare you, sir. be more discreet in future.
Roger, really really sorry to hear this ... and I can't even offer to dep for some of those gigs! Are you plaster-casted up to your elbow, or do they have a more user-friendly solution these days? Out in time for Xmas? I was trying to think of a musical instrument which could be played with one hand, and all I came up with were harmonica (badly) and piano (sort of). Not good.
thanks, hj. yup, right up and round the elbow and it's quite heavy. slept quite well last night and when i woke up i had to invent a whole new wardrobe of one-armed shirts. i had a dutch nurse who did me up and she was quite gorgeous. we had the what do you do/play the double bass conversation and she told me that her son played the cello. she could tell what mood he was in by the way he played. very nice.

i'd favour a hybrid over a ply, in fact a hybrid amped could be better than a solid in some circumstances. i gig a solid regularly and don't have any qualms at all, although it mostly travels in my car. it got knocked over on stage a while ago and i claimed on my free mu insurance. imo, feedback in a hybrid not an issue.
Silly question maybe, but I've never broken a limb - just how painful is it?
nor me previously, cos. it's ok until i try to rotate my wrist then it's agony. also the sling weighing on my neck is a bit painful but overall the whole thing is ok. it's just bloody frustrating not being able to do many things that i used to take for granted. and, of course, no gigs; that hurts. and you will notice i can't do caps.
More helpfully, I found this review of AER Amp One and upright bass on TB http://www.talkbass....tml#post6455522
thanks clarky, looks very interesting for db but with gigs cancelled i'll reconsider next year. -
Bad luck, swift recovery! But... 'one of the wife's horses..? Chipping Norton..? Oxfordshire..?' Do you know Dave, Rebekah and Jeremy by any chance..?
i've seen them around. i was standing next to jc in the fish and chips queue the other day. miserable and scruffy individual. and aesthetically challenged ? top gear must have a very good makeup person.

AER Amp One - The best amp I have bought - EVAR !!
bassace replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Amps and Cabs
actually, i did know what a transient is, and i bet clarky does too. i first encountered the term in the fifties when hifi was coming on the scene. yours in lower case -
got kicked by one of the wife's horses yesterday afternoon. left arm broken so no double bass for at least six weeks and three bands will have to find deps for a total of 15+ gigs. when i get playing again my fingers will be all soft so i'll have to go through the blisters thing. aaaaaargh. yours in lower case.

Didn't like playing on a stand at all.

But is it any good for double bass? -
Thanks Bassace. I don't own the Stagg anymore as I was spending more time on fretless. To start again, would it be better to pick up a 2nd hand Steinberger or not spend the extra and pick up a second hand Stagg? I have read some horror stories regarding the Stagg in terms of build quality. Thankfully our one was fine. I think you can pick up a Steinberger for aroung £400 second hand.
Well, that puts it in rather a different ball game - I was assuming you still had the Stagg. In that case probably better to get a Steinberger than buy a new Stagg if you have the budget.
-
Having owned a Stagg (yours now Michael) and a Steinberger I feel that you will probably be just as well off with a bit of knob tweeking on the Stagg. Yes, the Steinberger is the better bass in terms of workmanship, playability and overall quality but in sonic terms not a lot, I feel.

I've heard a lot of good things about this amp but nothing re double bass yet. Anyone with experience? -
I have a recurring dream, nightmare even, that I'm at a gig and I haven't got my wire bag with me. Had it for years and years. Long time ago when I was playing trombone I had been overhauling the slide, so when I turned up at the gig I opened the case and had only half a trombone. Not much use really.

M'Lud, I understand that the defendant is a member of, ahem, a beat combo.

I've said before, four basses and four Underwoods. But yes, I have a brand new Bassmax for sale but right now can't remember how much I was asking. I'll scroll down the ads and try and find it. Edit - £80 posted

Oh no! I thought we had seen off the kettle lead thing.

Gig At first I used to get mildly irritated (pissed off) when non-musos used the word gig - because when I started it was a 100% muso word, meaning a freelance musical engagement. Musicians did gigs and concert goers went to concerts, not gigs. I don't care much about it anymore. BTW, one theory about the word is that it came from the time when there were no 'bands' as we know the word, just orchestras, and musicians were recruited on a freelance basis. Many of them at the time were Jewish and on being offered a job would mutter 'God is Good'. GIG, see. I'll go and lie down.
As our car was nicked last night, I will not be buying any new gear and may be selling some stuff. This search is off
Whaaaat? That's terrible Clarky. It shouldn't happen to a nice guy like you. Shouldn't happen to anyone really but 'specially you. Commiserations.
