1.
I don't know sounds difficult to create 12 hours of slappity poppity fury dead loud on DB
Well, isn't that just the point?
2. Reading all the posts re technique, gear etc It got me thinking; is there any interest in a DB get together, perhaps in the M25 area ( or wherever)? This would not necessarily be an annual thing (or it might?), probably early next year. Any interest? and please indicate the sort of area you would like to meet up at.
3. I once sold a DB to a BG player who wanted to take up the instrument. I explained that, as a jazzer, I played mainly in the flat keys - Bb, F, Eb, Ab, Db - compared to the rock sharp keys. His reply was 'is that because of musical snobbery?'. Oh dear, as has been posted previously, it is because the horns are tuned so that their C scales (no flats or sharps) are in the flat keys. Trumpet and Trombone Bb, Saxes Bb, Eb. I don't know if it's because I've been playing so long in 'flats' that I now have the utmost difficulty in playing the sharp keys - something a slab player could do in his sleep.
4. Useful topic Beedster. The holy grail has got to be mic to FOH plus monitor(s). However this could lead to fedback problems with a (DB) inexperienced sound engineer. So a nice compromise is mic to FOH and pickup to back line. Only two drawbacks here; I find that most DB gigs don't have FOH unless I'm in a good theatre or the gig is a big outdoor one. Also, you're unlikely to hear the beautiful sound from your bass if the speakers are in front of you. So most of the time I go out with backline and pickup, plug and play and concentrate on making music. Strangely I never experience feedback. Well not in the electronic sense anyway.
5. Four basses and four Underwoods; QED. Mind you, I also have a cheeky little DPA 4099 to use whenever there is front of house.
6. Upton - The Prof Martin - George (name of Tom's son) Meinel - Ginger German Blonde - The German Blonde (as in 'I'm taking the German Blonde out tonight') Important to name them then you remember which one you're playing.
7. That looks a class act! Pity he's in Glasgow. (Don't mean to be Scottist) Good luck with the sale, Douglas. It deserves to sell at that price.
8.
It'd be great up until the point that someone approached you car and asked what tackle and bait you favoured. *smacks forehead*.
I get the odd silly person coming up to me and saying 'your car's in good condition for a 55 plate'.
9. I Want to Live. A great film noir with music by Johnny Mandel. Gerry Mulligan did an album of Mandel's compositions from the film. Worth a look/listen. Almost jazz?...... Julie London singing Cry Me a River in The Girl Can't help It. First time I heard Barney Kessel.
10. I bought a new double bass from USA some years ago. I met the proprietor's wife at Gatwick and she walked through with two bloody great flight cases (actually had a baggage handler carry them for her). They came in as personal posessions. So bring your Fender in with confidence.
11.
Cheers mate. Are AI still distributed by Overwater? Jim
Yes they are. Laurence will sort you out. They also do EA.
12. So sorry but I have a gig down in Sidmouth that day. It'll be my last gig after five years with the band so I can't really dep it out. I'll be thinking of you guys; it was such a great do last year and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who hasn't been yet.
13. Hi Jim You could find yourself getting several replies, each with a different recommendation. So to start I'd recommend as a simple no nonsense solution a Gallien Krueger 150MBS. These come up for sale from time to time. Then a very good rig but more expensive would be an AI Clarus with an EA Wizzy 10" or 12" cab. You don't say what pickup you are using but you'll probably need an outboard preamp as an impedance buffer, such as a Fishman Pro eq. I see your Dresden DB is for sale so am intrigued by this enquiry.
14. Headway hands down. It will cut feedback to an acceptable limit. But you may still be disappointed if you use it through backline. If you could link to PA (no preamp needed if phantom power available) with pickup to backline for monitoring you will have a great setup.
15. Mostly, I don't talk to anyone and no one talks to me - that's the way I like it. Although on more than three occasions some guy or other has said 'that's the best double bass sound I've ever heard'- yes really. Do I believe him, nah.
16. ezb Surrey is quite a distance from North Oxon but you are welcome to visit me and have a try on my four basses. They are sufficiently different to be able to give you a handle on what to look out for. I also have some amps, preamps etc to demo. I'm not trying to sell anything so no pressure at all. Oh, by the way, I don't teach - Jakesbass is the man for that, and very good he is too.
17.
I get how this happens (I am not a family man) and everything does get in the way as you get older but that is oneo f the things I always say about reading the dots. It cuts down the need for rehearsals to a minimum whcih means better gigs with less time spent preparing. Keep a bass and use the time off to develop your reading to the point where you are ready to gig again when your kids no longer need you around so much (because that day will come ).
Wise words.
18. My Clarus is great and service from Overwater, via Laurence, is first class. He also kitted me out with some Wizzies.
19. I've got a nice bright blue jacket from Red Cross, Woodstock, for stage. I thought £20 was a bit steep until I saw the label - Versace! Don't worry about the age thing, I'm 70 next Feb. Never really grown up and avge two gigs a week.
20.
OK. I usually prefer to ask questions without further background so as to not influence any responses I get. But this question seems a little obscure. Tatia Starkey is Ringo Starr's granddaughter, and the bassist of the band "Belakiss". I was curious to see what people thought. Personally when I've listened to their songs, there's nothing special in the bass parts or playing, but it just seems to fit the songs. The following song is sort of Coldplay-ish, and having a virtuoso playing incredibly complicated parts wouldn't be suitable, IMHO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHPItCXtCUA Starkey, with her extensive erotic dancing background (please only click this if you are over 18), appears to also add a visual component to the band, and moves in an interesting way when playing. Overall, I'd say that she adds a fair amount to the band, but it's not really in terms of very fancy playing. Hence I was curious to see what very bass orientated people would think. Is there a role for the "functional" bass player, or do many of the people here who could probably play rings around her think that a more expert player should be in the band? Or, perhaps I've, as I've done before, missed something in her playing which is really good? Sorry about the mis-fire in starting this thread the way I did. Hopefully it will improve from here, or I'll have to stop posting and grit my teeth (again!) while it falls down the order into obscurity.
Wasps?
21. The remnants of the Who in concert last year did it for me. Ok, the singer couldn't really sing anymore, the guitarist didn't exactly shine but together with Rabbit, Zak and Pino they put an amazing band together. Individuals don't always make a good band.
22. I used to travel with my double bass on the roof rack. Not very clever perhaps.

That is such sad news. I very much valued and enjoyed his posts and was fortunate enough to exchange some PMs with him. Rest in Peace, Si.
24. Can I quote my own post on page two in support of Bilbo "That geezer who played on Moondance. For a four in the bar tune no rhythm, no pulse. It really offends. Yes really." I don't think he was badly advised, just a lousy player.
