it depends. a good bass can provide low action with little buzz even when you did in. some techniques only work easily with low action, but usually the tone improves with a little higher action. choose what's best for you.
I have the Pro-JZ3D in my custom jb. Love the smooth toneshaping and passive tone control and it works perfectly with nordstrand pickups. although I almost never use the mid control I can really recommend these preamps.
I just don't get this signature thing. the only reason for a lookalike that I can imagine is playing in an into-detail-tribute-band. I don't see any sense other than this. everybody will always sound like himself anyway and the only signature I like to see on my basses is mine - which I do.
I had seen him with his european trio in hamburg last november. definately one of the best concerts I had ever been to. singer/songwriter/keyboardist extraordinaire and a really nice chap, great vibe and energy.
seriously, andy! if you really want to improve something, please take a decent teacher.
gear won't help your wishes, you already have some of the best gear you can get...

This is for Bilbo and all Pat Metheny fans.

great, beautiful musicianship!
There is no "band" that I would love to replace the bassplayer in, but there are a lot musicians I'd love to do an originals project with like prince, larry carlton, herbie hancock, to name only a few...

Very Nice. I have a Guild Pilot (like the one on the left) in yellow with Kahler Tremolo.
Superb basses.

good choice, and if you put the right pickups in these pilots they're epic.

Slightly off topic, but did anyone else notice that there was a floor mounted autocue with the lyrics during Elton and Gary's duet ? Partner didn't believe me until I paused the tv

I think that everything that helps to improve the performance is fine.
I never broke a string on bass within the past 30 years but always have a spare set with me.
on guitar I only had a few string breaks on rehearsals and I believe only 1 at a gig in the past 30 years, but usually I use 2 guitars on a gig and have some sets with me anyway.
I never personally tried either, since I went the custom pedal tube preamp route but for 1u I suggest either demeter, an old aguilar, alembic or go 2u and try the new hype: http://www.juleamps.com/bass/monique.html...
played at a great jamsession on saturday. some great musicians made it possible to improvise some very nice tunes.
also got a lot compliments about my playing and sound (played my frankenjazz with the shuker neck) through the house combo (swr workingman 15 with di through house pa).
I didn't like the stage sound so much, but anyway: very happy!
