The subject of relic basses is often quite an emotive one with debate highly polarised. I can see why people like them, it's really just a question cosmetic taste. My own inclination is the opposite end of the spectrum. I like my basses to be pristine and new, to the extent that I am highly cautious about buying from a shop because I don't like the idea that my 'new' bass has been sitting there for a while, possibly passing through the hands of anyone and everyone who fancies a go. Others may find that they cannot buy a bass without having played it first. So basically I was wondering which broad category basschatters fall into and whether there are many like me?
My wife keeps quoting this about me to my friends. One thing I notice here compared to - say - Harmony Central is that most of us seem to gig here, whereas many of the members of other music forums are bedroom only players. The difference is in focus: playing alone all you've got is whether you can replicate the track or not, but on stage you're having fun and working with the audience. No-one (apart from the bedroom guitarists at the back) will notice that you started your slide down to a note 1 fret higher up than on the record, or that you didn't manage those 16th triplets perfectly. They're all to busy enjoying the music, and the fact that you're into it too.
Lulz! U started the slide down 1 fret up den on de record! Can't u play 16th triplets, noob.

Looks really good. Where did you find such a well fitting pickguard from?

So, has anyone actually *tried* the Orange isobaric cabs?
Alfie replied to Le Chat Noir's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have a 212. I am not entirely sure how loud it is because I haven't pushed it past 10 o'clock, which I found to be just a bit louder than necessary for playing with a drummer. Then again I am in a folk band at the moment, so the problem is more playing quietly enough rather than loud enough. As for heavy, you wouldn't want to carry it to a gig via public transport, but you could easily carry the cab, bass, pedals and terror bass from your car to the stage in one trip. I have fallen in love with the tone, but then again I play 51 RI with flats and the tone rolled off, hate treble. -
Talking about Italias, has anyone ever tried the Maranello Z? It had a piezo pickup and came in interesting colours. I considered getting one a couple of years ago, but decided it wasn't worth the price tag so I never tried it. I think it is discontinued now, but does anyone have/tried one?
I am sad to inform you all that... presently that one is the only one in the country in that colour!!!, as they have not yet been introduced widely to all distributors, it just so happened that particular dealer received "the one" as a sampler in that colour. Yes of course, there'll be more of the same to come but not for a while, in the meantime, I've phoned him up and snapped that off him. So now it's on its way to moi! as you can see he removed it from ebay as we did a "phone deal" (better than the price advertised) saves him ebay mafia fees and me delivery charges. Everyone's a winner!
Thanks mate, I am very pleased too, when I finished with it, it will be lovely.
What else are you going to do to it? You might get to the stage where you would have been better off just getting the Fender classic series fiesta red precision.

I don't mind Behringer, they are cheap so I guess I don't really care what they look like. But when your talking about a price tag of £100 plus, then image is a major stumbling block. The thing about Zvex is that people do spend plenty-dosh because of their image, but from my (very limited) experience of them, the finish isn't designed to be trod on repeatedly for a decade.

From my experience of playing bass I have noticed, particularly when it comes to gear, that bass players can be among the most picky individuals under the sun. I don't look much beyond Fender, in fact I don't really stretch beyond a Precision. Others don't like Fenders at all, and that is cool, we all have different tastes. There are of course many many bassists who like just about anything, no matter how many strings etc, as long as it grooves. For me, basses are as much about image as sound, live performance is both an aural and visual experience. However I am also very picky about what my effects look like, which may be a bit irrational as only I really see them. So my question to Basschat is, has anyone else been put off buying a stompbox, no matter how awesome it may sound, purely because of how it looks? The two biggies for me have been: IMO (it's just an opinion!) This is the chav of the bass effects world:

Bringing this thread back on topic (I don't much care for this guitar nonce-sense), are we going to get a specific forum for chatting about Hitler? I have so much I want to say.

If only they made some single ply guards. If only aftermarket pickguards were more Squier-friendly.
Blimey... Squiers aren't cheap anymore. Great colour combo though.
Agreed. Interesting to see what price GAK or Digital Village will sell it.

Apologies if this has been posted already, but: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ME:B:SS:GB:1123 Fiesta Red! Awesome!

Ok... so it isn't a bass, but it has four strings so it sort of counts. This is my cigar box guitar made by Daddy Mojo in Quebec. It is great fun to play.
Not to confuse things more, but I don't know if anyone has mentioned this one? Identical in operation to the Diago supply that sells for 60 quid, myself and many others on this forum use them and they are brilliant. Better, IME, than the Maplin one, but that's not bad either. The one linked above however is small, has multivoltage input, and can supply a LOT of current while maintaining a quiet output.
I use one of those, they do the job well enough. I don't see the point in spending mega cash on a power supply.

If a more expensive cable gives you more confidence in your sound, then it is well worth whatever you paid for it. It doesn't matter if the only sound difference is in your head, if it makes a difference to you then it has worked. It is like placebos, they aren't fake drugs, they fulfill a genuine role in medicine.

I have one and I love it. Probably the best pedal I have ever bought, great for practice/creating songs. I love it for being so small and portable. GET IT NOW!

In his defence, he also emailed me in the morning to apologise. Who hasn't done something they regret after a couple of jars?

Funny thing is, they have gone to all that effort to replicate a 60s neck (making it unplayable in the process), when 60s necks with rosewood didn't have that brown blob, so it looks just as fake.
