I know it's probably not what you want, but visit the Waterstone Guitars site - I have a twelve string TP12 that looks just the same as the blue bass pictured - they also make a four and eight as well. P
I already have a Waterstone Indra, which I love. I am mostly interested in the Duesenberg semi-hollow because I like the colour. Also I did watch Tom Petty last night and I am fairly sure that the guitarist was playing a duesenberg.
  2. I bought a beautiful Waterstone Indra about a year ago, and I didn't look at a bass website or chat room for months. Then in the autumn I decided to take a quick peep at TalkBass again, then I joined here, then I got GAS... I got it bad. The thing is, right then I should have just maxed out the credit card and bought a tube rig or something similarily impressive to satisfy my problem. What I actually did was I tried to appease my craving with little things- effects boxes. Buying stomp boxes is the GAS equivalent of smoking crack... it gives you a quick and easy instant hit, it is hugely addictive and while the initial outlay is small it quickly builds up, leaving you penniless and on the streets, pimping your ass to dirty old men just to score another fuzz...
  3. I love the look of Duesenberg basses such as these: As they are German, and as everything is so expensive in the UK, I was wondering whether any German BCers know of any good shops in Germany that sell them and have good websites in English. Also has anyone got any experience of these things, I have never played one.
  4. You don't want to waste your money on a Squier. With an SX you are not exactly paying £130 for a £55 bass, it is just that the dollar is so ridiculously weak so it is a bad way of looking at it. For the playability, look and variety, SX is clearly the way to go. Plus dealing with Rondomusic cuts out the totally crap British customer service/relations.

    Hi all!
Im actually at Brookes, one of my best m8's is at brasenose though. Which one are you at?
I am at Exeter, Brasenose are our nextdoor neighbours.

    Hi all!

I am also at Oxford, which college are you at?
  7. It is very easy to do, and the self adhesive vinyl they use to put words and pictures on racing cars is pretty tough. The only tricky bit is cuttimg out the holes for the pots, but they are covered by the knobs anyway.
  8. I was too cheap to get a custom made pickguard, so I bought a whole load of sticky-back-plastic from a car pimping place and stuck it on. I tried orange first, but it ending up making my bass look too much like Jodie Marsh. I may try lime green next, metallic silver is wierd enough to allow you to pull off a whole load of colours.
  9. I know I already posted the pics on BC a couple of days ago, but they also belong in this thread. My SX SPB-57 MSL:
  10.
Thanks. Very illumnating though I'm confused about the SX costing £85 including shipping and taxes .. Was it second hand?
Sorry, I was being vague. I just had a look at the receipts and it was £95 before taxes.
  11.
Welcome to the SX maniacs club! That's different Interesting to hear a direct comparison to a Squier. How much would your squier cost, for comparison? OG
My Squier P Bass special is about 9 years old and has a PJ configuration, today I think they cost around £170- which is about twice the the price of the SX after factoring in shipping and taxes. The main problem with the Squier lay in the neck- the neck quickly developed an incurable forward bow, adjusting the truss could only cure some of it. It always had bad fretwork, but the reduced tension caused by the bowing really showed this up and the action had to be set extremely high to compensate. Also the intonation of the bass was screwed. The SX has not been professionally set up but it plays surprsingly well, intonation is far better than the squier and could be spot on with a bit of adjustment. The neck feels much more comfortable to play and I prefer the gloss finish of the SX to the more satin style Squier. Also the factory has cut the nut to a more reasonable size than the Squier's. The Squier feels sturdier, I am happier with the Squier's body and finish. As far as the electronics are concerned (and with the humbucker on the Squier turned down for parity), I find the SX has a bit more clarity but there is not much between them in volume. I think with both manufacturers the quality is inconsistant, and I just happen to have a good SX and a pretty poor Squier. Actually the Squier is quite playable now because I have added a new neck... bought from Rondo music, as well as some Wizards. So a good SX is far better than a bad Squier, it would perhaps be more useful to compare two good examples- but the simple fact that there is inconsitancy makes SX the winner in cost. I also have a CIJ Fender. To compare the SX to this would be an insult to the Fender.
  12. I just recieved my SX P Bass in metalic silver. Although FedEx are a bit useless, the process of ordering from Rondomusic is relatively straight forward and cheap. Plus the SX plays a lot better than my Squier.
  13. We also both seem to use a GK MB150! I wouldn't mind meeting up, I would certainly like to know more about DB.
  14. Hi Bassace I live on the other side of Chippy from you. I will have to keep and eye out for your gigs.
In short no! However, the action should be treatable... lack of sustain is trickier. Not sure without playing the bass why you have that problem. Though if the strings are a mile from the pup then you may be losing it there and/or the neck bolts aren't tensioned correctly... bridge sh*gged... body wood cr*p... tuners kapput... pup shot. I'd still not throw £10 at the aesthetics of a bass that is unplayable. Sort that first then decide.
Cheers for the input I might use it for a project. I'm not going to sell it, so I might as well have a go myself. The action is much better than is was thanks to a little tweak of the truss rod, however I can't get the strings much lower at the bridge because of some pretty uneven fret wires. My best option with the action is to change the nut. I think I will give painting it a go- there are some pretty good walk-throughs on the internet. I don't think buying a green one is an option as I have never seen a P-Bass that colour for sale. So I don't think I have anything to lose- if I balls it up, then I have ruined a bass I don't really need. If it turns out great then I have a good looking thing that is by no means unplayable- it just isn't as tempting as my other basses.

This is the colour bass I want. I have a Squier P-Bass that I don't really use very much. I was thinking about getting it painted and sticking in some new pups, but is it worth it? The thing is probably worth about £100 so can I really justify spending the same again (and more) to make it look good, even though it will still have its inherent problems with high action and lack of sustain?
I've just had my Warwick sprayed with Lamboughini Muckylargo orange, supplied by car paint suppliers and applied by a luthier.
Is it expensive to get a luthier to do that? I also want a green p-bass.
  18.
Welcome sir - nice to see a semi = what is it exactly and how do you find it?
It is a Waterstone Indra shortscale semi-hollow http://www.waterstoneguitars.com/bass_indra.shtml I bought it online from Bass North West and had it shipped over. I basically wanted a Gretsch but could in no way afford one so I thought this offered the best compromise between cost and quality compared to Eastwoods, DiPintos, Italias etc
  19. Hello I am a long time TalkBass user who needed a bit more local advice and expertise. I live on the Oxfordshire/Gloucstershire border and have been playing for about 10 years. I am in a band called The Institute who are gigging mainly in London. At the moment I am rocking on this: And I am pleased to be here.
