1.
As is clearly demonstrated by energy-saving CFL lamps where a 15W CFL is roughly the same brightness as a 60W incandescent.
You shouldn't believe what it says on the packet.
2. Just watched bits of a Rammstein gig on Youtube. Scary.
3. To me this suggests bass players are really hard to find, whereas guitarists are ten a penny. And another one lost to bass won't be missed.
4.
I mean, Banned of course CSE English let me down again. I was offered a gig to play bass behind a curtain whilst a celebratory mimed on stage. I turned it down for lots of reasons as well as fear of a black eye if I Fccckt up.
That just conjured up an image of The Who miming live on stage to The Kaiser Chief's playing behind a curtain. And/or vice versa.
5. I had the original (2002-2004) version of the Rebop 5. Not as pretty as the more recent ones, but still a great bass. In the end I just didn't get on with 5 strings.
6.
I'm guessing you don't like classical music then. Without Wolfie on keyboards, those Mozart piano concertos are crap.
I can see what you're getting at, and this isn't quite the same, but ... In the early 1970s I bought a recording of Beethoven's 5th Symphony conducted by Pierre Boulez. Didn't know anything about it, it was probably going cheap and I'd seen Boulez conduct at the Proms. When I played it, it was quite brooding and dark, but I liked it, more than other versions I heard later. Recently I rediscovered it, did a search for a CD version, and discovered that version had been slated by the critics as too slow and Boulez had been so upset by the reaction, he refused to allow a CD transfer. So even in classical, there's a bar you have to get over to be acceptable.
7. I thought TBird, but in the screenshot looks more like a Jaguar, but doesn't fit exactly with the models on the Fender web site.
8. I got a Line 6 Backtrack+Mic recently, which is very good provided you don't put it too close to one of the amps. They're getting cheaper on eBay too, I got mine for £28 posted. I previously had the Backtrack without the mic, which isn't so useful, it's really only for recording one instrument.
9. Just found Guitar Music Analyzer for Android phones. You can either load an mp3 off the sd card, or use the microphone, and it tells you the chords. Just emailed the developer to see if they could develop a version that picks out the bassline. I've got Digital Music Mentor on my laptop. It was very expensive, does pick out bass reasonably reliably, but has all sorts of bugs and doesn't seem to be supported any more. Which rather puts me off spending any more money on Transcribe.
10.
Can someone please explain why we are so worked up about this guy?
There are some people on here who do know how to set up and repair a guitar, whether they do it professionally or not. I'm not one, but I can understand why they get a bit upset about what he's doing. For the rest of us, I guess it's just a never-ending replay of a car crash.
11. On his feedback and that returning Axe, because there's no negative feedback for sellers now, a lot post glowing positives as soon as the punter pays. Naive buyer, maybe a beginner, receives guitar, it seems ok, so they leave positive in return. A few days later, either the bodges start to show through, or they show it to someone who can play, who points out the problems. So they negotiate a return. I seem to remember somewhere he said he'd exchanged a guitar when the first one "didn't suit" the buyer.
12. My Markbass 1x12 sounds the same whether I stand right in front of it, yards away from it or to one side of it. I've never understood why this is, having had all sorts of problems at times with stacked 1x15 + 2x10. As to whether it moves air, depends on the venue and whether I get the EQ right.
13. I've been told more than once I'm a "typical bass player". I'm not sure it's a compliment.
14. Internal Memo: From: Manager, UPS Depot, Dublin To: All UPS UK Hi guys. I can't decide which bass to buy. If you see anything interesting going through, divert it over here, only need it for an hour or two. Cheers
15. The really worrying thing is, £79 for a Fender custom parts bass, and I was thinking about it.
16.
I convinced myself that an Ibanez Blazer would be the tool of choice so I started trawling the ads on the forum and on eBay. Incredibly I own a Yamaha BB414 and BB300, both of which do a damned fine P-bass impersonation so why am I thinking a Blazer would do it any better? Damn you GAS
It might be better. You'll never know till you've owned one.
17.
there was a rally car over here. Guy advertised it as "Only driven on weekends "
Most of us have basses because we're in bands, gigging is what they're for. I don't have mine to hang on the wall or to keep in my uncle's loft. Anyway, all of mine were secondhand, and for all I know they could have been used as a paddle in white water rafting.
18. Superb bass. I love mine. Good luck with the sale.
19. I had a dream last night and, unusually, I can remember quite a lot of it. I was in a music shop, don't know where. I was looking at basses, then the salesman pointed me to a booth, a bit like record shops used to have in the 60s. You could press buttons on the wall and listen to the sound of different guitars. No basses, of course, just guitards shredding like crazy. I came out of there, then the salesman comes up with an order form. For £79 you could mix and match parts of any Squier or MIM Fender. I was thinking this was a really good deal, then it all faded away. I haven't been in a music shop for about 10 years. I'm not seriously looking for another bass. Does anyone else have strange, random bass-related dreams?
20. I'd never heard of Furch. I guess you know they're still in business. Thomann stocks them. A Furch guitar was up on eBay last week starting at £549 and it got no bids. As has been said, rarity and quality don't count for anything if it's a brand buyers don't recognise or find appealing. Japanese copy brands like Ibanez, Greco, Fernandez and Burny can get £500+, but even then it depends which model it is.
21.
Is there something wrong with looking after your gear and being a bit precious about it?? I look after all my gear - I don't want it being a victim of some drunkard w***er climbing on stage and falling all over it or spilling beer on it. To me "never been gigged" says "looked after", "cared for" or "treated with some respect" - yes, they may be tools of our trade but that doesn't mean they should be subject to "accidents". If they get damaged in your home/studio then you need to be a bit more careful...
There's nothing wrong with looking after your gear. But "never been gigged" doesn't mean "really well looked after", "unmarked" or "in as new condition". It could mean "has been lying on the floor, the kids use it as a cricket bat and last week the cat was sick on it". When I'm looking at for sale ads, one of the things I look for is clear, specific information about the condition, not vague statements that are supposed to imply something, but don't actually mean anything.
22. I've spent so long with an mp3 player on random I hardly know what I'm listening to any more. When I got an android phone I downloaded CarTunes, which has voice search, so I pressed the button, and then couldn't think of anything I wanted to listen to. My son brought Spoon "Gimme Fiction" and My Morning Jacket "Z" over from the US. Pretty good light rock.
23. Never been gigged puts me off. I imagine its been played in a bedroom by some spotty geek in an anorak and bobble hat, and I wonder what else he's been doing in there.
24. and Thomann gives a 3-year warranty on everything they sell.
25. I suppose they're even less common outside Europe, but even so .... Your Princess looks nice. I was amused by this pic on the Dutch fan site.
