For interest only as it's in the US and about to end - Madeira EB/JS copy "Made in Japan, adjusted and distributed by Guild". Looks kinda cute. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=160399406324 -
With the headphones on you can hear the cough which explains the wayward harmony around 2.29 that stops abruptly.
Couldn't hear the cough, I was laughing to much (at the clothes, mostly).
Although I've never played it personally, I wish people would lay off Mustang Sally. It is a victim of it's own success, but that success is because it's a fine song and audiences love it. I for one certainly wish I'd had the skill and foresight to write it and one or two other 'Standards', and if I had I would be very proud of it, not to mention considerably better off. Who here can honestly say that they would not have written such a successful song given half a chance?
Dead right. If you can't find something to enjoy in Mustang Sally, you're not playing it right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COTchg91cv4

What´s a good price for a DeArmond Starfire
spinynorman replied to basshead56's topic in Bass Guitars
So I bought Neepheid's. I was watching a good nick one on eBay a couple of weeks ago, just to see what it went for, and it made £350. They seem to be well thought of, even amongst fans of the Guild original. One possible drawback in some people's eyes is the 32" scale, though it actually doesn't feel like a short/medium scale bass. The other drawback is the wide body, which means very few cases or gig bags will fit. I've ended up with a gigantic Warwick acoustic bass gigbag. The alternative, if you can find one, is the Epi Jack Casady case, and I think you have to modify that. -
I have a "Butterscotch Blonde" 51 RI P. It's yellow.

I think X Factor winners with pseudo-operatic voices should be discouraged from covering Wild Horses. Oh, and I'd ban covers of Hallelujah entirely.

Should I get an A Frame or Regular Stand?
spinynorman replied to dostoyevsky's topic in Accessories and Misc
How do the Ultimates work for closing and releasing the neck support? It looks like you have to do it manually, whereas the Hercules is automatic. Only time I've had stability problems with Hercules it was because the legs weren't fully open (I use the 2x hanging stand, though). -
Astonishing new sound enhancement product

Oddly, that isn't quite as funny as some of the real audiophile sites. These people have gone beyond parody. Things haven't changed much since the 1950s. spinynorman replied to dostoyevsky's topic in Accessories and Misc
The advantage of the Hercules stands with the neck support is, when you put the guitar/bass in the stand the neck support locks round it, so it can't fall out, unless the whole stand gets knocked over. When you lift the guitar out of the stand, the support releases automatically. This is really great in gigs for quick, safe changes between songs. They also do multi-guitar hanging stands (see GS422B on the BassDirect link), which are particularly good for odd shaped bodies, like a Thunderbird, which would fall out of an A-frame stand. Another thing to be aware of is some cheaper stands have foam padding which can react badly with, for example, Gibson Nitro finishes. It can literally leave a hole in the finish. If all you're doing is storing basses at home, why not get a rack? for example http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/13099 -

"Brilliant Pebbles have made a bigger improvement in sound quality than the last $1000.00 interconnect cables I purchased. Thanks!" "PS. I am not stupid, I really resent that implication, the voices in my head resent it too. One of these days I'll get even." -
Hard case for Spector Rebop (4 string)

This one http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/std-ebs/3543 I make it 46" internal length and 13" body width. -
Hard case for Spector Rebop (4 string)

I had a Rebop 5 until recently and I'm sure I carried it in a Hiscox Lite Flite with no problems, although it mostly traveled in a Warwick RockBag. -
I bought an Arctic White Epi Tbird on eBay last week. It looks gorgeous, the finish is good and it's well put together. Soundwise it's quite flexible - if you roll off the bridge pickup a little and back off the treble, it's very warm and smooth, whereas with the neck pickup rolled off it's more edgy and clanky. I also had my Fender Precision at practice last night and they're very different, the Fender creates its own space in the band, whereas the TBird kind of flows around and underneath. I found myself digging in a bit more. The nearest I had to the original was a Gibson IV, which is all mahogany, set neck and TB Plus pickups. It's reckoned to be a TBird on Prozac. I think what killed it for me was the mahogany, it just makes everything too blurry. I prefer the Alder/Maple combo on the Epi. Seems to be a good time to buy the older models, I suppose due to the deals available on the Pros. I'm sure my bid wouldn't have won a few months ago.

Weather + Amp delivery = MASSIVE DELAY
spinynorman replied to jamesbass116's topic in General Discussion
Get on the phone and yell at someone in customer services for a bit. That always makes me feel better. -
I had a Japanese Epi Elitist EB3 for a while, which was short scale like the Gibson and the standard Epi EB0. The tone of the big humbucker was great for annoying sound engineers, and I doubt if you'll miss the little bridge pickup. Thing that killed it for me in the end was the neck dive and the short scale, which I couldn't get used to.

Weather + Amp delivery = MASSIVE DELAY
spinynorman replied to jamesbass116's topic in General Discussion
Sorry if this makes you all more miserable, but I bought a bass on ebay last Sunday night, from a seller in Shropshire and Parcelforce delivered it on Thursday. A speaker stand and some lights I bought Monday arrived Wednesday, the worst day for snow here. The bass is an Arctic White Epi TBird, so if I hold it up to the window it disappears. -
I'm a mixture of left and right handedness. Sports things like holding a bat or throwing are LH, other things like writing, playing guitar/bass are RH. Actually, though, my right hand is not very good for guitar. I can't do finger picking on guitar or keep a rythm going finger style on bass. I have to use a pick. My son plays bass left handed, but I think he's right handed for everything else. I did try playing his bass, and I could do it just about, but it was a real struggle. Could be there's a bit of left brain/right brain divide at work here - supposedly the left hand would be wired to the more creative right brain, but I'm not sure if that helps.

what tune/band that got you into bass ?
spinynorman replied to phil.i.stein's topic in General Discussion
Deep Purple, "Black Night". It was the first riff I'd ever got the hang of on guitar, which made me think that it was those two thin strings up top that were holding me back. -
Generally I find www.interparcel.com is the easiest way to arrange shipping. You have a choice of couriers, usually including UPS, DHL etc, at better prices than you'll get direct and it's very clear about tracking and insurance. Most courier services are tracked with insurance to £50, but you can increase that. The couriers they use collect and deliver reliably and I've never had a problem in the UK or overseas. The sticky is Courier Points System and Issues, in case you couldn't find it.

If it's punk, shouldn't you play a P that's been attacked with paint stripper?
-
The start of Smoke is great to play. The guitar and keyboard build a level of anticipation, but that riff doesn't really get under way till the bass comes in. Just hit those Gs like thunder.

We need a siren, like in QI. Then next time there's a thread like this, anyone mentions Jaco or Victor Wooten it goes off and they lose 10 points.

It is a nice story, but 20 pages of Awesome!! or worse Subscribed! is a lot to wade through. I didn't realise till I joined the old Dudepit, just how many praise and worship bands there are in the US, and of course they all have bass players. The Pit equivalent of the Off-Topic forum here had a big notice saying no religious or political posts, but what that actually meant was: don't suggest the bible isn't literally true, don't criticise George Bush, don't advocate gun control, and don't, whatever you do, mention climate change. When the Pit imploded Talkbass and BadAssBassPlayers didn't appeal and I came here instead.
