1. Doing a medley: Wizard, Rockin Around The Christmas Tree, Slade, All I Want For Christmas, Last Christmas, Jingle Bells and Band Aid
2. You might, though not definitely, find in a live mix it doesn't sound good with that much bass in your tone, but if it sounds good to you for practice in your spare room then that's all that matters.
3. Only time I've seen it look good was at the last ever Mistress gig where Drunk smashed his PRS at the end. It was a great end to one of the best gigs I've been to and a fitting end to a show full of stage-diving and violent pits and giving it a real feel of finality as it was known to be their last performance.
4. The pickups on the Tom Hamilton are custom wound too, so be interesting to hear how they compare to regular L series pickups. I think The Gallery are G&L stockists too, but I don't know how much they hold on the shelf
5.
Can't wait for the Christmas album!
7. I tend to use a ballpark figure of a day per song for recording, so three songs at eight hour days would be three days, so I'd probably see sixteen hours as a bit optimistic. Couls be done though, an old band of mine did three songs in two days, but with limited mixing - we called it a "live" recording. I do think in your sort of situation, the studio is definitely the wrong place to be experimenting with structures/FX/tone etc, you should really know almost 100% of what you're going to do before you go in.
8. Check out the Peter Theobalds era of Akercocke - not sure what they tuned to, but being black/death metal it's going to be low. Anything off the Words That Go Unspoked, Deeds That Go Undone album would be a good place to hear it, particularly on the opening track Verdelet which sounds very Rick-ish
9. My G&L SB2, a joy to play - neck is somewhere between a J and a P, though closer to a J and the tone is fantastic - distinctly "precisiony" but with more clarity and evenness across the strings. With the pickup volumes turned all the way up it really grinds, but will do Motown thud too if you turn right down and then turn your amp up. It's light too, which is great - the under-sized body really helps there. Would I change anything? In an ideal world I'd maybe have the neck a little wider, though not much and I'd probably pick a different colour if I was buying from new, nothing wrong with the colour it has, but probably not my first choice.
10. We played a private party thia summer and a muscularly built eastern european gentleman came up to me mid-song pushed a £20 note into my shirt pocket and said "play [song]" I forget the exact song, but it was a pop-dance hit from the 90s that we don't know. I tried to explain we didn't know how to play it, but he was quite confused that we couldn't just knock it out of the top of our heads. Managed to get rid of him in the end though.
11.
The only real problem I find with G&L in general is the reserved and understated appearance. Which is why I bought this one..
Yeah, the L1500 for instance really suffers aesthetically for not having a pickguard. Somone put up a thread a while back who'd put a tele style pickguard on an ASAT and it looked fantastic.
12. As an update, he's bought it: paid £375 delivered so sounds like a bargain. He should get it Tuesday and I'm seeing him Wednesday, so will report back when I've had a noodle.
13. Cheers guys, I will pass that on - I hope he does buy it, as that way I can have a go on it
14. Beautiful, I think the colour really compliments the maple board.
15. Can you power these off phantom?
16. Ooooh, lovely, I've got L2500 GAS at the moment, I keep thinking about trading in my tribby L2000 for it's 5-string brother. Looking forward to seeing pics, my SB2 is a '95 in midnight blue swirl, so looking forward to seeing how the colours compare.
17. A mate of mine is after a six string bass and has been offered a Yamaha TRB1006 for £400 - is it a good bass and is that a decent price? I don't know much about Yamahas, or indeed 6 strings, cheers.
18.
Ahh I see! Sorry, that went completely over my head When is the CTM100 due for you then? If it is anything like my CTM300, it will be awesome! Looking forward to seeing your video review of it!
Is there much difference between the 300 and 100 beyond power?
19.
Rehearsal tomorrow night. I'm going to take the P bass and roll of the top end a bit. I've also simplified how I play the bassline of Kiss and We are family so I can really concentrate hard on locking in with the drummer, who I find easy to play alongside. We have our first gig the following night. Maybe some of all this is pre-gig anxiety. I'll report back in a few days. Wish me luck, Folks.
If you prefer the feel of the L2000, just solo the neck pickup in passive mode and adjust the tone to taste
20.
Well, I'd love to. However, I shudder at the thought of the price!
Yeah, not cheap, but wasn't sure if you knew :-) A USA G&L with a custom neck is the top of my GAS list, but out of budget for now
21. In my old metal band I frequently had from one of the guitarists: "sh*t, I've forgotten my power cable/Instrument cable/amp jack again, Graham can I use your spare?" I swear I used to bring duplicate sets of all my cables so I knew we'd actually be able to play. Edit: to the point where I was using speakon with my amp, but used to bring a jack cab cable as well for the times he would forget his.
22.
Folks, I'm on the lookout for a passive J bass (or P/J) with a P neck - I'm used to a 44mm G&L neck. Could be a Fender, could be something else. Any suggestions, please? Steve
If you buy American, G&L will put your choice of neck profile on a JB1 or JB2
23. Doesn't Alex accept returns within 28 days?
24. Thea Gilmore's version of Ever Fallen In Love by The Buzzcocks is great and quite different to the original, I can't put up a Youtube link from work though unfortunately
