How easy is it to bypass the preamp on an RB4? I only ask because it was really easy on the HCM series - literally just a case of pulling the speaker jack from the back of the preamp, so you could connect a different head if you wanted (which is what I'm doing these days with my Ashdown LB30). By contrast, I noticed that the connections on the RB8 are all internal, though - did you have to crack open your RB4 to do the bypass? OP: I guess it depends on the tone you're after. Starting from flat, I usually find that Laneys are a little brighter, the Peaveys I've played through are little more bass-heavy. But with a few tweaks of the EQ, you could quite easily make one sound like the other, both seemed very versatile.
Instead of plugging into the input on the front-panel, I plugged into the FX return on the back (via my Sansamp as a pre-amp) which goes straight into the power-amp. Doesn't sound quite like what you're doing with your Ashdown as I was still using the power-amp in the Laney.

I had a Laney R4 (300 watt 1x15) which was solid, if unspectacular. It was dramatically improved by bypassing the pre-amp and going out of a Sansamp directly into the FX return, sounded pretty good then.

Sold a Lakland bass to Gavin, top bloke, good communication, everything went through as it should, cheers fella

Pub gig last night, which was in a marquee; fortunately I planned ahead and brought fingerless gloves with me. We're there New Year's Eve, so the gloves should be a good investment at £1.50 from Primark. Played well to a relatively sparse crowd, which for the first time in ages included the wife as we managed to get a babysitter. It was all going well until about half way through the second set when she hit the third bottle of Prosecco and managed to get the singer's wife paralytic - I ended up driving the singer and hs wife home with her almost passed-out on the back-seat. Other than that, was all good lol

Active basses, not saying I'd never have one, but I have a strong preference for passive now

Yup, clearly a fretless is no use for anything at all rocky: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ls7ljTRVQmM

What to do when you got mardy neighbours?

I have to use headphones at home as otherwise I wake the children, wasn't wild about it to start with, but tbh I now prefer it to a practice amp. -

I should probably say, sent the bass in question last week by TNT via my company's freight forwarder, got delayed over the weekend (shipped Thursday, should've been there Friday, but actually arrived Monday) and the buyer said it arrived all as it should be, so in this instance at least, TNT delivered the goods if you will allow the pun.

Interesting you've used Dingwall pickups, I'd have thought on paper that the string-to-string balance wouldn't be great on the output as the pole pieces would be lined up for an angled pickup so wouldn't line up with the strings when square. However, if it sounds good then that just proves how these on paper discussions can often be a load of baws.

CDs you dont listen to (Part Two). A solution?

Same, I'm sure I could do with a purge -
Emperor's best of album, currently The Loss And Curse Of Revernence. Bass is pretty much inaudible in a lot of these black metal recordings, but cracking songs nonetheless

I'm looking to trade my Westfield Les Paul for an equivalent spec SG copy - Westfield/Vintage/Epiphone etc, ideally in black or white. Good guitar this, I juat fancy a change; I tried it through my mate's AxeFX recently and it sounded surprisingly good. It's in great nick as although I bought it from new in 2004, I've only ever used it at home. I'm in East Grinstead, RH19, if you want more photos let me know. The light on mine often doesn't come on when I switch the power on, normally comes on eventually though when it feels like it. It's a known issue with the LED module apparently, mine's been like it since I got it from Shep about a year ago and not had any other issues with it. Might be worth seeing if it can be fixed under warranty, otherwise I think it'll be more money to repair than it's worth for a purely cosmetic fault

I really like the octopus decal on the "Mark Hoppus" bass - is there a Fender version witht that on?
I once owned a Corvette many moons ago, tone was thick and very growly! The neck wasn't thin but it wasn't chunky for me, but it did feel very, very nice! I'm now thinking of looking for Warwick alternatives! Anyone know of any similar sounding basses? I'm specifically looking for that growly tone that the Wicks produce Probably go custom from a luthier using exotic body woods will maybe work out the same as a standard mass production bass?
I used to have a Mayones Be4 with EMG single-coils and that was very Corvette-esque, but (IMO) had a sensible neck profile and lacked the "sex-toy" upper horn This was the one: [Img]http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/Ghost_Upon_The_Stage/IMG_267825141212690_zps085d4e95.jpg" class="ipsImage" />
Interesting. Of course all the basses were played full up with the same flat EQ The basses are ... 1: Fodera 2: Squier 3: Music Man I wish I could do another comparison but I don't have the Fodera any longer. : / I will do a slap/finger/plectrum comparison once I get the new Squier 77 and pit it against a CV and a MIA. Though the MIA is by far superior in many ways, the others have a sound that works in some context's.
That's interesting as I thought number 1 was a musicman, and didn't really like number 3
Soundwise, I've not heard or played through such an expressive cab before. It brings a new level of clarity and nuance above my Compact
Gah, don't say things like that, GAS is a bastard
