It's a very slim, quite shallow P Bass neck Graham. Very comfortable, but doesn't feel like a Jazz neck. It's more somewhere inbetween. The pickups are SD Quarterpounders but don't sound overly aggressive to me which suits me fine
Cheers, I'm really liking the sound of this, will have to look out for one try.
Wow, 5 pages and nobody's mentioned Behringer, so let me be the first! In a certain rehearsal complex in Leicester they had, at one time, a Behringer head and 4x10 which sounded completely sh*te, due to one of the drivers missing a cone! They also have a selection of totally crap Peavey combos. In another, more upmarket, rehearsal complex round the corner, they have a selection of "decent" gear such as Fender, Markbass, Trace, and Ampeg. Only the Markbass sound any good, the rest are all bobbins! (The Ampeg being especially dull and boring) These are expensive amps and cabs, in good conditon, but to my ears just don't sound as good as my own amps (including my cheap Ashdown Mag)
I had to play through an awful Behringer 4x10 with my old Hartke a few years back at a gig, wasn't particularly impressed with it, was even less impressed that I pay for the privilege as the American headlining band (the appropriately named See You Next Thursday) demanded the other bands on the bill pay to 'rent' it from them for our sets. Think it was only about a fiver, but was pure fuming at the principle of the thing as no-one else had brought a bass cab, as we were told the headliner would provide one. Basically they're tour had been a disaster and they needed to recoup some money; suffice to say I didn't bother to hang around to watch their set.

What's the neck like on this Nick? And do you know what pickups are in it?
Are you kidding me? That's the worst bass I've ever played
Well, it was 7 years ago so my memory may be a little worse for wear
Had a marlin sidewinder, went by the name of Laura.
I thought it might be her, that Marlin was a nice bass - I liked the P/H pickup configuration
Anglia Polytechnic University, or 'APU'. They ran an advertising campaign on the sides of buses in 2001, slogan 'Make it APU in 2002' I looked forward to the following year's campaign: 'Have a wee in 2003'
Yeah, I remember seeing a poster add for them in the Tube and feeling aghast, it read: "Didn't get the grades you were expecting? We might still have a place for you at APU"
Yeah Hold on... Do I remember you have a Korn bass on here? If so I think I know who you are (via who you dated)
I did have a Korn bass back then......part exed it in 2009ish for an EBS cab Who was I dating?
There was a Torque Bass amp at my old uni... that thing made everything sound crap
You didn't go to Anglia Polytechnic did you? As I remember there being a Torque there, and you are in Cambs.....

I'm pretty happy just being a bassist to be honest, although I wish I could play drums - not got the coordination for it, and I'm trying to improve my singing at the moment those would always take 2nd place

TC Electronic BH250 Bass Amp – SAFETY PRODUCT RECALL
Graham replied to bruce@tc's topic in Amps and Cabs
For those unfortunate enough to be in this position................. They are some superb people on Basschat, how about setting up some kind of amp loan thread, whereby if somebody is without one for a gig, they may be able to get a loan amp from somebody local? Just think it may help rather than stressing about getting your TC back in time. I know the ideal solution would be TC setting up loan amps, but this may not be practical. Just a thought. Good luck to all of you.
I'd be happy to do that for someone local -
Unfortuantely I'm at work all day during the week so no time to learn stuff until I get home in evenings. I'll only panic if the gig band suddnely pulls out the 'Actually we do this in a different key' at last minute. I'm not the best at instant transposing on stage unfortunately. I've asked for clarification on the keys of the 33 song set list but not heard anything back yet. What larks, Pip!
I've had that, it's not a fun place to be; however I think you'll probably be fine - just break down the set-lists into smaller chunks to make them more manageble, you'll have a busy week and odds are you wont learn everything perfectly but you'll get 'close enough' on the vast majority of it.

Trying to remember all the amps I've played through: Hartke Transient Attack 1000 Very good bang to buck ratio, clear, defined sound - not as good as something like an EBS but good nonetheless, would have one again if money dictated. Ate pre-amp tubes though, I wonder if mine had a slight fault in that regard. Aguilar DB750 Very nice amp, deep, smooth and punchy sound - very 'tubey' for a hybrid head. Was a bit too clean and polite for the band I was in at the time, but would consider one now, a bit heavy if I recall correctly. Ampeg SVT 4-Pro Had a decent sound, but just struck me as a bit dull - particulary compared to the Aguilar and, like the DB750 it wasn't clear enough for my needs back then. Markbass Littlemark Tube Good amp, took me a fair bit if fiddling to get a sound I really liked, but when I did it was great - came quite close to getting one. EBS Fafner Bought this straight away after trying it, unlike the Ampeg, Aguilar and Markbass I gelled with it immediately and found it had a tone I loved - clear and defined without sounding sterile and lifeless. The filters were very powerful too, reminded me more of studio EQs than an amp; if space and money restrictions were different I'd love to have one again, particularly the new 2 channel version. Mesa 400+ Used a mate's for a gig when I thought my Fafner had died - turned out to be a cable. A bit like the Aguilar: deep, sooth and very clean sound, whilst is was a very good sound it struck me as a bit of a one trick poney - but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Marshall VBA400 Was the house amp at the Download Festival when I played, had a big sound, but wasn't defined enough for my tastes, ended up wishing I'd put my foot down and brought my Hartke with me. Ashdown ABM Evo III I really liked this, far more versatile than I thought it would be, particularly liked the sound when the pre-amp was pushed into grindy overdrive. Reliability issues and the lack of rack mount put me off a bit though and it still would've lost out to the EBS. Orange Bass Terror 500 Very nice little amp, powerful and light and sounds very tubey, though again, a bit of a one trick poney as the filters a quite limited, particularly if like me, you're used to EBS; would definitely consider having one though. Genz Benz STM 900 My current amp, really like it - deep, powerful, authoritative tone that is still articulate and defined, in a lovely small, light box. I'm remarkably pleased with this and can't see myself changing any time soon, there's things I want to add to my backline (I'd like to swap my Sansamp BDDI for a Darkglass B7K and add a Midget T to complement my Compact), but the amp itself is a keeper. I've also messed about with a Genz Shuttlemax 12 (complicated and a little sterile) a stereo Gallien Kruger of some variety (bit harsh sounding, a bit like an EBS, but not as good) a Peavey solid state head (workable, if un-inspiring but good value for money) and a Marshall head of some type (enormous, thick sound - liked it). That's all I can remember and so for me, the best amp is an EBS Fafner - it does everything I want brilliantly and I'd love to have one again, though I am in no hurry to part with my Genz as I'm really enjoying that. I'd also really like to try an Ampeg SVT-VR, an old Acoustic and some of the newer Mesa heads sometime.
Lakland's Geezer Butler P. Brian from Lakland confirms there are no plans for a Skyline version
I literally went from elation to despair reading that post. Edit: I'm not wild about the pickguard - but that's easily changed, I do love the 5th fret inlay

I've made up my mind! FS - Fender American Standard Precision

I'm struggling to think of high-profile endorsees / pro-players too - Jerry Cantrell has a signature guitar, though Alice In Chains aren't as big as they were in the 90's, the boy from Stained (are they still together?) had an L2500 and I think Rise Against's bassist used an SB-1 but they're not exactly massive either.
-
Their marketing doesn't seem the best and that they aren't as ironic looking doesn't help; but I suspect a big part is the pricing - a new Asian made L2000 will set you back £6-700 whereas a Mexican made Fender will be a couple of hundred cheaper and odds are will be similar but a step up from the buyer's first bass - a Squire.
-
You make some good points and what info / past examples I have found have been in The States, so I may have to import from there when I get the money together.
-
Ah cool, I can't see a join in those photos so that's what made me wonder. Great looking Jazz though, really good example.

What's a two board body? And how do you tell?
-
I'm not too fussed on collectibility, just a good bass tha's the same age as me. However, just to make it harder, from what I've read I think I want one from the latter half of the year when they introduced the MFD split coil pickup. Fortunately I'm not too bothered about colour, otherwise it might be impossible to find one. You're probably right though, start saving and see it as a long term project and buy one when it turns up.
-
It's my 30th in 2015 and I was thinking about trying to get a YOB bass for then and considering my love of precisions and G&L an '85 SB-1 seems an obvious choice. To see if this is a possibility for 2 years time, or not going to happen I need to find out a ballpark cost of one, however I have no idea what these go for and can't find a huge amount of information online - any ideas? I'm guessing less than a Fender or Musicman from that time, but more than, say, an Ibanez?

Something by Jamiriquoi?
I think a few others use it here and there in some pickups, but not right across the range (Delano rings a bell) Definitely a contributor to the BIG Bongo sound, along with the 18v electrics and 4 band eq..
Dingwall use it in their pickups.
That is surprising. With neodymium getting a bit of attention recently due to its ever increasing rarity (used in wind turbines) I would not have expected to find it in commercial pickups at all. I use it extensively but have only ever seen it in one other, the qtuners.
I believe the price of neodymium has been falling in the last year as the USA have stepped up production to compete with China
If you want information about hartke stuff, call Larry! 201-680-8153 Don't know the code for USA, but this is his actual number. He will answer the phone.
+01 for the USA I phoned him once but he didn't pick up, (probably busy) and left him a message saying how chuffed I was with my new rig (Transient Attack model 1000 and Pro 4200 cab). That amp's been gone a few years now but I'd gladly have it back if circumstances demanded.
