Recommend me a good start up LINED fretless bass??
Graham replied to Jigster's topic in Bass Guitars
I have a de-fretted jazz copy from the 70s by Avon which you can have for £100.00 that has the 'lines' where the frets have been filled in PM me if you're interested -
Lovely, i sadly need to downsize my collection after moving to a flat so i'm thinking about selling all my basses apart from the Lakland and using the money to buy a good 5-string - does anyone know ballpark prices for new and second hand USA L2500s?

Most godawful tuning you've been asked to play in
Graham replied to Nibody's topic in General Discussion
The metal band I'm in play in drop B but as I'm awkward I play in B standard and just shuffle everything that isn't on the bottom string up two frets - has made for some tricky fingering occasionally when open strings have been involved but it's never caused a major problem -
That's the first Parker bass I've ever liked the shape of

Any interest in a trade for an upgraded Mexican jazz - I've swapped the pickups out for Fender 'originals' which are apparently the same pups as in their Geddy Lee sig and the 61 re-issue, and put on a tiger-eye pickguard. I can also throw in my de-fretted Japanese made Avon jazz copy from the 70s to up the trade value?

Do you have to make any mods to it to make it run on UK power or can you just use one of those adaptors that sit on the plug you can get at the airport? -

Cheers guys, i would like to own a bass with a non-lacquered maple board one day, presumably there's a way to get them clean
-
My G&L has a lacquered maple fretboard and it occoured to me the other day that I haven't a clue why - is there some tonal or playability advantage or is it just aesthetic? If it is just aesthetic it's a shame as I prefer the look of maple necks without the lacquer and it must cost more to make a guitar with it
ah yes, I'm actually not that bothered about the Q, so anything with a semi-parametric EQ that goes down to the bass frequencies would do.
In that case the EBS Fafner has a semi-parametric mid which I love - I tend to leave the bass and treble more or less flat, boost the mids and use the frequency control to tune it to the room. I think fully parametric eqs are less popular as a lot of people don't really know what the Q control does and so ignore it or mis-use it, both of which will make it sound a bit sh*t. Like you say it's not that complicated but it's not something a lot of people are familiar with
-
I assume you're after heads with fully parametric EQs with the Q control?

I found that when I was playing an Ibanez K5 - two active humbuckers with a 3 band eq which had a semi-parametric mid so buckets of tonal control but really only a few usable tones and tbh by the time I finished with it and swapped to a jazz I only really found 1 tone on it that I really liked.

I played oned of the J-type Lodestones at the Birmingham guitar show a copule of years ago on the Ashdown stand, I really liked it - the neck was very comfortable and while the EMGs aren't everyone's cup of tea seemed to work really well in that bass

For the most part Pink Floyd songs are a bit dull on the bass front, however Pigs (3 Different Ones) from Animals is one of my favourite basslines

Dammit, would've been up for this, but I'm getting married on the 8th of June and I don't think my bride to be would be too impressed if I popped out to do a gig..............

Congrats fella, it's a great feeling; the covers band I dep in has a guitarist and drummer who i gell with really well we seem to read each others minds sometimes. The frustrating thing is they have a regular bass player and i'm only with them when he can't make a show or if I get the gig. Whilst they've not said it explicitely all the other members have strongly hinted they'd rather have me but the regular guy is a mate so it makes everything a bit complicated

I work in purchasing so deal with carriers quite often and it's not un-known for drivers to make up a name and sign for a package without bothering to deliver it. Best of all, if they have lost it Thomann will see a fraction of the value of the shipment refunded, TNT lost a shipment of ours at work not a high value only about 60 quid and we eventually got 11 pounds refunded

Tool, what's happened to them
Graham replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
They're one of these bands who I'm sure I'd like but have never really listened to...keep meaning to pick up some albums but they all seem quite expensive given how long they've been out for...
But worth every penny, try downloading a couple of tracks and see how you do - say: Stinkfist or Forty Six & 2 off Aenima; The Grudge or Schism off Lateralus or Vicarious or Jambi from 10000 Days I'm not sure if those were all singles but they'd give you a flavour of the band and each of those albums which all sound different whilst still being clearly Tool -

I think there was supposed to be a new album this year, hopefully be next year now; can't wait to hear new material and see them again - one of the most visually stunning bands I've seen
