I had the Catalinbread SFT for a while. Great sounding pedal but I found the amount of volume boost a bit uncontrollable. Had to have the volume on virtually zero for any kind of unity with the pedal engaged. Never thought to see if there were adjustable trim pots inside though.

Plenty to choose from. Fender Rumble, TC Electronic BG Combo, Roland Bass Cube are a few that spring to mind.

I use the Tritonlab pedal later in the chain. At the beginning I have an EHX Bass Soul Food which is always on to provide a little bit of breakup. That could be worth a look as well for some low level grit. It's a nice little pedal for not a lot of dough.

It's a very versatile pedal with 2 gain stages which can be blended for a huge range of sounds from very subtle to wild. There is a common misconception that it needs it's own power supply. It doesn't. It has internal electronics which step the voltage up from 9v to 33v so it runs on a standard Boss type supply. It also cancels some buzzing frequencies in my setup. I use it with flatwounds too.

I'm out in the sticks and have played in bands with people who don't drive. To perfectly honest, they are a pain in the arse having to be ferried around. The last thing I want to be doing is providing a taxi service at the end of a long gig, then drive home on your own knowing that your passenger is safely tucked up in bed. Different if you're in the city though and can get about under your own steam.

There's a whole load of stuff my band would never play, mostly for good reasons. We're a rock band but my taste in music is very eclectic. I like little more than playing along to CDs of music I love or basslines and grooves I enjoy. I never play the stuff we gig in my spare time unless I'm learning something new.

Highest - Aladdin Sane. Also the piss take of Ricky Gervais on Extras. Lowest - The Christmas thing ^^ with Bing Crosby where Crosby obviously had no idea who Bowie was. Also thought the Alabama Song was dreadful.

If you just want to try out a load of effects to see what they do you should, in my opinion, go for a Zoom B3 which will give you hours of fun, has some really good patches, and can hold its' own in virtually any situation. Probably within your budget as well.

I only really use octave down so the Up and 2 Down settings are irrelevant, but I found the Sub n Up low tracking the best by a considerable distance. I had a COG T16 for a short while but the low tracking went haywire much too easily for my liking (which is probably to be expected in an analogue pedal). I know people often refer to 'latency' in digital pedals but to be honest I have no idea what they're on about - it's certainly not anything I've noticed with the S n U.

As already stated, put the Sansamp at the end of the chain and DI from it to the desk or mic up your cab.

TC Electronic Sub n Up does 1 octave up and 2 down. Tracks low notes better than anything else I've tried and has 'toneprint' as well.

Have just bought an R16 with the sole purpose of recording live gigs that can be mixed with Reaper. Should make mixing easier rather than faffing around with a mouse with the added advantage that you can re-do any dreadful clangers after the event.

A WT550 is an itch I'll have to scratch one day. Played through one once a very long time ago and never forgot it. Superb amp.

I'm not a fan but it has uses. I very rarely post anything but a while ago I messaged our singer to enquire as to why he had time to post on FB every 5 minutes but never found the time to learn the words to songs we were rehearsing. Didn't get an answer and he didn't know any of the lyrics at next rehearsal either.
