1. Obligatory Fender Rumble suggestion.
2. Picked up a Keeley Bassist from Dan. Everything spot on.
3. Laptop bag again. Perfect.
4. I've never wanted to be in the spotlight but also love what the bass brings to the sound. Some people realise this and others have no idea what the bass does, which appeals to my mysterious nature.
5. Meshell NdegeOcello - If That's Your Boyfriend with the groove monster David Dyson on bass. https://www.youtube....h?v=2OiBzYckcYI
6. Could never get into them because of the wailing vocals. Probably missing out on some great bass playing but don't think I can bear it.
7. Best 5 string in this (and considerably higher) price range by a country mile in my opinion. GLWTS.
8. I wasn't that interested until I started going to gigs. Then it hit me and I thought 'I'm having some of that!'.
9. Sounds like you've got an itch that needs scratching.
10. Put some flatwounds on your bass.
11. Not top of my list, but definitely on it, was the sheer lunacy of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
12. I think he falls into the category of 'innovator', and as such, a lot of what he does can be inaccessible. Many have gone before him - Dylan, Hendrix and Zappa to name a few, who pushed the envelope like never before. I think that Victor Wooten has been very important in pushing bass playing forward and knowing no boundaries for what, for decades, has been a background instrument.
13. I put a set of Custom Shop 62s in my Tokai Hardpuncher and it now sounds gorgeous. I was getting a bit paranoid about taking my Stingray to rowdy pub gigs and came up with this as a relatively cheap alternative. Cracking pickups.
14. +1 for the MB Fusion. Genz Benz Streamliner does a nice, fat beefy sound for not much outlay these days and can also do the gritty driven sounds as well. Worth a look.
15. I prefer the way an envelope filter responds to the dynamics of your playing.
16. I like the Premier Guitar demo on Youtube of the Bassist pedal. You can really hear what it does (for a change).
17. Yolanda Charles did some good stuff on this subject. It's probably on Youtube.
18. For a simple to use pedal that evens out the dynamics I'd be very tempted by the Keeley Bassist. Threshold, Ratio and Gain controls are really all you need.
19. I prefer the basic MXR octave pedal to the Deluxe. As for compression, it really depends what you want it to do. Are you looking to control dynamics, fatten up your sound or effect other pedals in the chain, or a bit of everything?
20. I went from a Trace SMX head to a Genz Benz Streamliner which gives a (to my ears) a nice, fat, rounded sound. Also has some nice gain available if you drive the preamp tube.
21. Headlined a local music festival. Played an hour long set up til 10.30 curfew. Went down very well. Lots of people wanting cards etc and booked straight away to headline next year. Only bad bit was moths. They had a big lighting rig which attracted swarms of the damn things. Singer swallowed one, I got one in my eye and down my shirt while the drummer was trying to swat as many as he could.
22. I'd use a clean boost pedal for the passive bass and switch it off when using the active one.
23. Always liked Tony Butler's playing. Greg Lake also springs to mind.
