Anybody from our fraternity who hasn't acquired this particular badge or T shirt is extremely lucky. I think that amongst lesser musicians, bass players are generally regarded as the last in the queue when it comes to input or opinions. As such, anything you say tends to be taken lightly, or not taken at all. I've found that throughout my gigging experience (which is quite extensive), that any periods of time that you're not battling some sort of issue or agenda will be fleeting but blissful. I've had occasion at rehearsals to turn my gear off completely because the volume is extreme, and whilst I could easily drown everybody else out it is completely pointless. The one occasion when I did do that though was quite memorable. I've concluded that guitarists and singers are mostly fragile divas with grossly inflated opinions of their own abilities and taste. It's a cross we have to bear, sadly.

Looks interesting. I've got a couple of Kokko pedals (looper, exactly the same a s a Ditto, and reverb) and am very impressed with both. They're both well made and for the money I'm very pleased with them.

I personally wouldn't put a compressor in front of anything that was sensitive to the dynamics of the playing. Digging in with drive or envelope filter is very expressive, but compress it and it all gets flattened out and you lose a load of character, in my opinion.

Couple of others by Kokko. The Space is a single knob reverb and the SOS is a looper (pretty much identical to the Ditto by TC but a fraction of the price). If you really want cheap pedals though, I'd go for a second hand Zoom B3 where the pedals available on that work out at something like 30p each.

For drive, the TC Electronic Mojomojo, Joyo American Sound and Caline Orange Burst all sound good. I like the American Sound most of those. TC Spark Boost is good too.

Just picked up a Bass Driver from Artisan in the F/S section. Top bloke to deal with. Have been reading rave reviews about the BD pedals for years now and eventually got round to pulling the trigger. Have had a bit of a muck about with it and am pretty blown away by it. It's great that you can programme 3 different sounds with the same core tone propping it all up, and a clean blend option too which I always like. After 10 minutes I reckon I have 3 sounds that are exactly what I've been looking for. The proof of the pudding will be at proper gig volume, but it's such a doddle to adjust that that won't be any problem. I checked out Youtube before buying but the sounds I heard on there really didn't do it any justice and were mostly full on face melt distortion. I've set up 3 sounds that I'd describe as Core Tone, Growl and Bark. Roll on next rehearsal.

+1 for the TC Spectracomp for a simple to use (1 knob) pedal that gets the job done. Normally available for around £45-50 and also has many TonePrint options online if you fancy tinkering around. Also as mentioned before, the DB160 patch on the Zoom MS60B is a cracker but you'd probably want to fiddle about with the settings which leads to the normal problem of 'what sounds good at home doesn't sound that great at a gig'.

When I switched to light weight gear my GP12 SMX head got put on the shelf. It didn't sound quite right through other cabs and I sold the Trace cabs I'd been using. Some time later I decided to sell it and when somebody stuck their hand up to buy, I dusted the head off and fired it up through my TechSoundsystems 2x12. Holy Moly! What a thunderous sound! Admittedly it was nowhere near gig volume but with the master volume at 1 it made the floor shake. I may have forgotten certain elements of the 'Trace sound', but through that cab it sounded mighty fine to me.

I play in a 3 piece (+ singer) rock band. What I do is have a pretty clean sound for the most part and then use a small amount of drive and sometimes a bit of octave (up) if things need fattening up a bit. Octave down tends to turn the sound mushy in my opinion. You could also try a booster like the TC Spark. A TC Mojomojo is a cheap dirt pedal that holds up very well and keeps your tone good and the Sub n Up (also TC) handles the octave up side. There are plenty of other options though. I've never thought Chorus really did anything to fill out sound but that may just be me. You could also try adding a bit of delay as an option. P.S. Another absolute bargain pedal that adds a subtle bit of grind is the Joyo American sound. I'm very impressed with this one and it also has a very tweakable EQ section (Fender tone stack inspired) so you can get a distinctively different sound when you want it (or not as the case may be).
