Sadly underrated singles that should've been much bigger
Japhet replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Loved this. Lovely bass groove too which is probably why I like it so much. -
Sade and Paul Denman were a good pairing.

I'll add a few to a pretty impressive collection. Right at the top for me - Dusty Springfield. Just love her voice. Sarah Maclachlan. Great singer. Eva Cassidy. Bless her. Annie Lennox. EDIT; Thought it was just favorite female singers - didn't see the bit about bass players so.............I'll add Susan Tedeschi with Oteil Burbridge on the fat strings.

Might have a go at this. I've got some of that foam pipe lagging knocking around somewhere that looks about right for the job.

Real-world gigging experiences post-COVID - how is it for you?
Japhet replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
Nothing doing for me. Our practice room is on an Air Force base and they have everything locked down super tight still. Perhaps they know something we don't. I'm expecting a second big hit from Covid anyway so I'm happy enough to sit tight for now. -
Wouldn't part with mine (TechSoundsystems 2x12 4 Ohm). Weighs next to nothing, sounds fantastic, superb build quality and handles anything you could throw at it. Just a brilliant cab. All I need now is some gigs to take it to.

More unusual instruments you fancy learning

I love the sound of these. Would love to have a go. -

Saw a bloke demonstrating mandolins at a show for Collings a few years back. He was the size of a grizzly bear with hands like frying pans and he was playing some amazing stuff on the mandolin. -
Helix and Kemper are obviously far more convenient than a big old valve amp and corresponding cab, but it's not much hardship to gig with a decent class D head and lighweight cab. Reliability could become an issue when the Helix type stuff gets old whereas I've always found class D amp 100% reliable. The other obvious thing for me is that nothing sounds anything like a valve amp into a decent cab. I've invested in the gear I have because I like the sound and the presence of it and am fully aware that most audience members wouldn't notice any difference whatever I was playing through.

I've got a Mywatt 200 and it's a thing of beauty. You certainly don't need to worry about running out of power either because it has headroom by the bucket load. I'd like to see anyone tell it apart from a Hiwatt DR201 too. Absolute beast of an amp. I've toyed with letting mine go through lack of gigging opportunities too, but wouldn't mind keeping it one teensy weensy bit either. Edit; I'll add a few more musings. In my opinion, the best way to use this amp is to bridge the normal and bright inputs. It really comes alive then. The power delivery on it is very linear and it doesn't run out of steam and start losing it's character however hard you push it. Everything remains crystal clear and it really cuts through in a live setting. Weight wise it's very manageable if you're relatively fit and certainly nothing even approaching an SVT or similar. It's certainly the best sounding amp I've ever had and I personally prefer it way above the few Ampeg valve amps I've played through. It also blows away the best of the non valve amps I've had which include Eden, Tecamp, Genz Benz, Gallien Kreuger and Mesa.

So it is! You'd think I'd be able to count to 3 by now. -

The Riverboat Song - Ocean Colour Scene (6/4) Turn it On Again - Genesis ( Something weird) -
This is brilliant (in my humble opinion)

Very helpful and excellent to deal with.

On a proper Robin Trower binge at the moment (and have been throughout lock down if I'm honest). He gets a bit funky with this one.

Aahh! Hi Tee Moon Weed.

Yes, but only the carriageway heading towards Middlesborough. The other carriageway was sung about by Eric Burden and the Animals entitled We Gotta Get outa this Place.

For the slight, gritty sound you're after it's worth trying some of the amp sims and pushing the gain on them rather than the overdrive option on the menu. I use a few banks on mine and have the same core sound by copying the patches but leave one or two spaces free where I can add whatever effect I'm after (like phase, env filter, chorus etc.). I also use a couple of separate pedals for 'always on' duties such as compression and reverb.

First rehearsal since lockdown and we were awful!!!
Japhet replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
I hadn't picked up a bass for weeks during lockdown but have spent quite a bit of time noodling on 6 string electric. In fact, I bought a new amp and a few effects pedals to muck about with. So, the other day I picked up a bass to run over a few bits and pieces and it was like mixing concrete with a giant shovel. Going to have to put in a bit of work to get hands and fingers up to strength now. -
The Final Countdown - Europe (?) There will never be a final Countdown, at least not as long s there are people over 70 in the World for whom it is the highlight of every waking day. That show will still be going strong long after we're all dead.

Has Brian May only ever used one guitar?
Japhet replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Walter Trout has been playing the same Squier Strat for a very long time. -
Donovan was wrong about electrical bananas. Narrowly missed an investment disaster there.
