1.
Yeah exactly - the sunburst looks crap - and one of the questioners has already mentioned the body wood issue. Need to see a pic of the headstock that shows how the fretboard has been applied.

Edit. I've just found these pics of another JS with a rubbish-looking sunburst! Does seem to follow the Jaco colour scheme.....

  3. Is it just because this appears to be in such amazingly 'new' condition that something about it doesn't ring true with me?

I've asked him to post a picture that will help put my mind to rest!

  4.
I'm gonna have a pop at this. Any suggestions what should be my limit?
I think I paid either £260 or £280 for mine. Mines in really excellent nick, and IIRC the buyer wasn't shipping.

Incidently - mine has an Ebony fingerboard, and I was under the impression that all the late '70's BB1000's were the same. The seller states that his fingerboard is Rosewood. He might just be wrong, although his does look a lighter colour than mine in his photo's but it's difficult to tell. Don't know if that's important or not.

  5.
Does eBay really find the correct value? I'm genuinely curious as I've never sold anything on there.
Well lets see. If a collectors item is going to reach it's maximum value, it needs to be put in front of the largest number of potentially interested parties possible. eBay is by far and away the largest marketplace and auction house on the planet, even bigger than Basschat! A collectors item is worth precisely what a collector is prepared to pay for it. It's possible, likely even, that the one person who was looking for an El Maya like yours and would have been prepared to pay £300 for it may have missed the original eBay listing, but given that the collectors amongst us here on Basschat had seen the original listing and decided not to bid over the £200 odd quid that you paid for it - it seems unlikely that we would now think it's worth a third more than it was a month ago. Caveat being ( I just twigged ) that the original seller wasn't shipping - so you'd have probably got it cheaper for that reason.

Anyway regardless of value - it's a lovely bass - good luck with the sale. Still think you'd be better off putting it back on eBay and offer shipping, preferably worldwide if you want maximum value for it.

  6.
That's lovely - certainly wouldn't hurt to stick a bid in. Then again, how much do these usually sell for? The BIN doesn't seem excessive to me for something in that condition.
They very rarely come up, this particular model, in fact this is only the second one I've seen on eBay in the last few years and I bought the other one!

The BIN on this one is more than I paid for mine in similar condition - but who knows? I guess they are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Great instruments though, beautifully made.

  7. Lovely bass, and errr quality thread - thanks for posting!

Why don't you stick it back on eBay where it'll find it's correct value - which'll at a guess will be somewhere roughly around exactly what you paid for it?!

  8. In the interests of completeness - I just dug the mag out ( it's in Bass Guitar magazine from '05 ):

There's at least three Ibanezes, two natural and one black. One of the naturals is definately a Blazer, and one of the others is the Roadstar II ( the black one I reckon ), of which he says:

"Well it's the one I still use actually ( What was your first bass? ) - it's a Roadstar II which I bought in '83 or '84. I had to save up for it for about a year and a half [......] £170 quid". Loves the neck he goes on to say.

What a great advert for Ibby Japcrap he is - good on him! I might buy his Steinberger just for the sake of it :)

  9.
What an interesting collection.

Thanks... I think... ^_^
I agree - lovely collection. Shame to have to split it. Although I s'pose they're not exacty rare - must have sold by the bucket-load at the time. Our first bassist had one - back in 80's....

  10.
Not even mid-priced, why not try a nice old (80's) Ibanez Blazer, preferably natural finish, ash body.
IMHO these certainly give a decent P-Bass a good run for the money.

Agreed - I love mine - and they do come up from time to time and will be well within your budget. Roadsters too - fatter neck, no split pup, fetch slightly more money.

Also agree with everything thats been said about the 70's/80's BB's. I recently snagged a '78 BB1000 (bolt on) which is probably the closest of the original BB range to a Precision. Stonking bass, beautifully put together/finished with some nice touches like the engraving on the bridge. Hard to find though - only ever seen one, and thats mine!

  11.
Jeez... if you manage to sand through the polyester coat, the colour and the primer down to the wood, you really are going at it with the sanding. Polyester is a tough beast !

Really? On the couple of guitars I've worked on I've had to sand the bastards for a bloody long time to get anywhere near the wood.
You're probably right - never actually done it myself :)

  12.
Ummm... Okay?

My point was that if the bass is already primed and painted, surely I can just sand into the existing paint and overcoat it?
From what I've read you can, but you still need to sand it ultra-smooth - which means you'll probably end up going through to the wood somewhere, which means primer.
