Aren't the Planet Waves plugs all-in-one moulded/sealed affairs? If so, you'll need to chop it off and strip back the cable. Similarly, if your right-angled jack is sealed you're probably better off replacing it with a new one.
From memory, yes, it's a sealed one. It didn't cost me anything so I'm happy to take a blade to it and cut off the jack and strip the cable. I'll be getting a Neutrik jack off the internet to replace it rather than swapping over the jacks between the two leads. It's the stripping I'm mostly concerned about as the cable it obviously a lot thicker than the wires I've stripped previously.

Background: I've got a cable with a right angled jack that I used to have running from my pedals to my bass for gigs, but I don't use any pedals now and the lead isa bit too short to run directly into the amp. I've got a Planet Waves cable that's longer, but has two straight jacks, and I prefer a right angled jack as the input on a P Bass is front mounted. Question: Rather than buying another cable, is it straightforward enough to buy a new right angled jack for a couple of quid, take the old jack off the Planet Waves one and stick on the new one? Do I need anything specialist to strip the cable or remove the old jack? I know the hot end of a soldering iron from the cold one and I've replaced jack sockets, pots and pickups myself with varying degrees of success.
Take a look a Deoxit D5, this stuff is the business...proper clean plus. I've used it on, amongst other things, a '70s Fender Champ that had severe crackling on the volume pot, probably its first ever clean! Result...back to 'as new' and still crackle free after two years. Not all cleaners are equal. P!
I'll have a look as I'm fairly certain that the pots on the Peavey have never been cleaned and cut in and out from time to time. Regarding the amp, is there anything I need to be wary of when taking the amp out of the sleeve? I don't fancy blowing myself - or it - up.

I love the headstock shape!

Do you and your partner have similar musical tastes?
Jono Bolton replied to Roland Rock's topic in General Discussion
My girlfriend and I used to have very similar tastes in music when we first started going out, but not so much any more. I mostly listen to punk and hardcore and she would come with me to see bands like Gallows and The Chariot, but now I couldn't pay her to come out to those sorts of gigs; she listens to a lot of pop now. She still likes Brand New and The Smiths though and that's all that really matters. -
I'm going to get myself some Servisol to clean the pots on my Peavey as they're incredibly scratchy (they're 30 years old), and I was thinking about doing the same with my Ashdown head because they're also scratchy and crackly. Before I go taking my amp apart, how easy is it to do? Do I run the risk of electrocuting myself?

Could just be that the Jazz pickup was added to the Blazer at a later date? The P/J Roadsters I've seen have had a jack on the pickguard and three knobs, I'd wager that the side mounted jack on yours was added when the J pickup was. Disclaimer: Total guesswork.

Does nobody on ebay post anything anymore?
Jono Bolton replied to Grangur's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Last November I bought my Matt Freeman P Bass from ebay. I lucked out and saw it within a couple of hours of the listing going live, at a ridiculously low Buy It Now price. I saw that the seller had a postage option and bought and paid for it there and then. I then received a message from the seller saying that it would be a day or two before he could arrange packing materials for it but he'd have it away by the weekend (I bought it on a Thursday evening as I recall). I was fine with this as I would normally allow a seller a couple of days to get something sent. I sent a message to the seller on the Sunday as I'd not heard anything from him. I didn't receive a reply until the Tuesday when I was told that he was away for the weekend (didn't mention that when he said he'd be posting it at the weekend!) but would sort it on the Wednesday when he got back. I messaged him for an update on the Wednesday evening and didn't hear anything from him until the next day when he told me he didn't have anything to post it in and that he would be refunding the payment and that he'd only put a postage option on the listing "as a favour". I stuck to my guns and told him that if he was offering a postage option and charging for it then it wasn't a "favour" as he put it, and that I didn't want a refund and that I wanted the bass I'd paid him for. Later that day he told me that he'd managed to procure a box and that it had been sent via Parcelforce to arrive with me the next day. What he didn't say was that he'd dropped the bass off at the Post Office just before 5pm so he'd missed the collection and it was picked up on the Friday to be delivered the following Monday! (I only found this out when I was on the phone to Parcelforce after having taken the Friday off). As luck would have it my neighbour upstairs had a bass cab delivered on the Saturday so they dropped my bass off at the same time. I don't understand why sellers list a postage option on items that you're paying hundreds of pounds for and expect you to be totally fine with waiting an age for them to actually send it off to you. I bought another Matt Freeman a few months ago and it turned out the seller had listed it while he was away on tour! Luckily he had someone at home who could post it on his behalf but they ballsed up and posted it via 48 hour courier rather than 24, again resulting in another wasted day off work. He gave me the money back for the postage though and was very apologetic about the whole thing. -
Hunting down squier classic vibe jazz? Harder to find...
Jono Bolton replied to goonieman's topic in Bass Guitars
Here's one that was in the For Sale section, doesn't say it was sold. I was interested in this when it came up but bought a Matt Freeman Precision instead. That's a belter Davie, more pics please! is that the original case too? That asymmetrical bridge is the same as the one on my Foundation, the saddles are ridiculous!

The logo on Marcus Miller's Jazz was in a similar position and they even used to do the same on the production models. I think they've changed it on the newer ones though.
Further research: if the CV tuners are the same size as the real thing, then Hipshot HB2s are the correct fit. Otherwise, I'm sticking with the HB7s.
The HB7s wont fit without drilling as the screw holes won't line up. The tuners on the CV Squiers are the same as on the MIC Fenders (Modern Player etc), and are a different shape to the ones used on the MIM basses for which the HB7s are a direct replacement. The HB1s look most likely of all the Hipshot models to fit.
-
The Hipshot HB7s wouldn't be a direct drop in on a CV bass; the tuner holes wouldn't line up and it would require redrilling. If you're not bothered about drilling new holes then presumably nearly any open-gear tuner would fit on there. The HB1s look like they'd drop straight in to the existing screw holes though. I've had no problem with the tuners on either of my Matt Freemans, I'd wait and see how you get on before changing them out.

I'm looking to switch the nuts on my 2 Matt Freeman Precisions but there is lacquer over the ends of the nut. What's the best way to get them out without damaging the finish on the neck?

Squier Precision - Matt Freeman model. Incredible.
Jono Bolton replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
Ive had my CV Jazz since they were released and ive had issue with it (or the neck in general) at all. Probably done 200+ gigs with it.
I'm sure they're fine (in fact I've heard a lot of people say they're pretty good), but they look like they're made from that stuff that dentists use for temporary fillings. -

Jono Bolton replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
Mine needed nothing but a slight turn of the truss rod. I did bring the saddles down a bit too as I wanted a bit more "snap", but it was pretty good as it was. Fretwork is good, the nut is not great but was cut well and would last a while...
What are the nuts on the CV Squiers about? Squier says they're "synthetic bone" and they work fine, but they look like they could started crumbling to pieces at any minute. They don't inspire confidence to look at but they function well, I've not (yet) had a problem with them. -

I've mentioned this several times before but another time won't hurt; I've got both Matt Freeman Precisions. I picked up the black one at the end of November last year for £175 "used". It still had the plastic on the scratchplate, and came with a Fender gig bag that I've since found out cost about £50. Everything about that bass is immaculate, and I love the sound. I used it as my band bass for a few months until I got a vintage white one in April. It cost a bit more but came with a Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pounder that I removed and sold so the net cost was £240 (inc shipping!) It has a few dings and scuffs, and the neck pocket isn't quite as tidy as the black one (there's a slight gap on either side - a fag papers' width) but I'm happier to use it as I'm a bit less precious about it. The white one feels a lot heavier than the black one. The necks on these are great. Took me a few days to get used to it as I'd been playing a P Bass with a Jazz-width neck but it's very comfortable to me now; wide and shallow to my hand. The pickups are really aggressive which suits me as I play in a hardcore band. We've not gigged yet but we've had a few people come in to listen to us as we practice and they all comment on how good the bass sounds. Both basses are totally stock and I've no inclination to mod anything. A lot of people talk about how good the top-end Squiers are for modding but as far as I'm concerned they're perfect as they are. In an ideal world I'd like to do a CV/MF hybrid, with the Freeman neck and pickup on a Fiesta Red or Sonic Blue CV body to add to my arsenal but with the two I've got I don't feel I need anything else. My Peavey has barely been touched in the last 6 months and I'm tempted to flog it as it's totally surplus now. As the thread title says - incredible! -
argh! I can't believe this... I bought one THREE DAYS AGO after looking here for a little while with no luck! I went for the white one... but I liked both and either would have done! good luck with the sale!
I have both! These are excellent basses and the pickups are great; my white one came with a Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pounder but I put the original one back in. They're both completely stock now, I've no desire to change anything about them.

I love Shell Pink, but I'd also echo the comments above and say that the tort scratchplate doesn't go with the colour combo. My general rule is that tort can go with pretty much any colour but only goes with rosewood fretboards.
I don't see a problem with it. I don't change strings every time I want to tinker with a bass - would make it an even more expensive hobby, and throwing out perfectly good strings is just a waste.
Agreed. Replacing the strings every time you took them off has never occurred to me; to my mind it's common sense to put the same strings back on unless there's something wrong with them. I'm happy to string leave the same strings on a bass for years at a time. I should probably buy flats.
