My main issue with refinishing the bass myself is that I live in a flat and don't have access to a suitable place to do it. Also I don't have the patience or technical ability to achieve a decent finish I fear, I'd just make a pig's ear of it. If I do go for a refin I'll definitely get someone else to do it.

Fender to finally make the Starcaster bass and reissue the Coronado?
I don't get what's not to love about these headstocks, they're like the traditional Fender ones but more swoopy and awesome.
Yep, I think it's awesome! I think I'd want one less if it had the standard Fender shape. Sorry xilddx, I like the Ibanez one as well! -
The headstock looks a bit Ibanezy to me
Refin. It seems to me the colour is the only reason you`re not playing it, so get it how you want it, and treasure a great gift.
Good advice Lozz, if money were no object then that's exactly what I'd do!
sage green isn't a bad colour.... some people may prefer it to black - why not ask for a swap?
I did post an ad on here a few weeks back but no one took me up on the offer
MB1. If you're happy with the way it plays and sounds Can you not come to terms with its sageyness? I've heard of bands being Ageist but not Sageist?
I've had it 8 years now, so I reckon if I don't like it now, I probably never will. It's spent a lot of it's life as a backup to my other basses, partly because some played or sounded better, and partly because they looked better.
it will have a poly finish, it will be a b*tch to refinish, buy a new body. My favourite guitar has no original parts left, but it's the same strat i've had since 1989.
Trigger's broom? I know that getting a new body would be the most cost-effective route, but then I can't say it's the same bass, and I fear it may make me look like an ungrateful git if I replace the body and sell of the old one. It's very much a head (and wallet) vs. heart issue.

A Starcaster Bass in Black with a maple neck? This is where I'd attach a "Shut up and take my money" meme if I could work out how. -
I have a Mexican Jazz Bass that I hardly ever play. Part of the reason is due to the fact that I don't much like the colour, it's Sage Green Metallic and I bought it when I had a hangover and it was the only one in stock and I couldn't be bothered waiting the 2 or 3 days it would have taken the shop to order in one in a colour I wanted (I bought it in Glasgow and was staying down in Ayr at the time, which was an hours train journey away). In short, I was stupid and impatient. The bass was my 18th birthday present from my parents and for sentimental reasons I don't really want to sell it, although I feel bad that I'm not using it. So, I'm thinking that I could either buy a new body in black, or have it refinished. Obviously if I swap the body it's no longer the same bass, but a refinish might be costlier than buying a new body. Or, should I just sell the bass and buy something that I'll actually use? Opinions please!

I don't have any parts you need, but I'd like to be the first to say "pics of this beast please!"

Can anyone recommend a decent set up in Glasgow?
Jono Bolton posted a topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi all, As the title says, really. Does anyone know of somewhere to get a decent set up that's not going to charge an arm and a leg? I'm struggling to get a good action on my Jazz and so it's not really getting used, and I feel that there's something untoward going in with the truss rod nut, so that needs looked at. I've tried a few places such as Strung Out and Guitar Guitar and neither of them were that good, and in one instance I think I paid them just to lower the strings and nothing else. Alternatively are there any BC'ers who fancy a crack at it? -

Does anybody else absolutely love these? I have one on my P Bass and I find it much easier to use than the standard BBOT bridge that the bass originally came with. String spacing is much more accurate, and for some reason I find that the action and intonation is much better than the standard bridge. There doesn't appear to be much difference although the base plate on the standard bridge seems to be a tad thicker, but would it make much difference? It's probably just under 1mm thicker. Also, was there a reason that Fender stopped using the threaded saddles? Aesthetics, cost, or something else?

With the cola soak, do you just rinse it off with water afterwards? I've got a Marlin Strat copy I'm supposed to be cleaning up for a mate, most of the hardware could do with cleaning up.
Bet you didn't expect to see me in here Fender Cabronita Precision. Because I can't do anything properly
Very nice, I really like the look of these basses! (Althought I'd swap out that ugly high-mass bridge)
It isn't necessary... but if you go and whack on some new strings a couple of weeks later then you'll need a new setup to match the new tension and neck/string interaction - even switching like for like requires a new setup. Rather that the shop being "opportunistic" (which to a point they are - it's a business after all) it actually saves you money from having to pay to set it up all over again. Of course if you plan on keeping the same strings for a long long time then it doesn't matter in the slightest. Interesting read this.
It never occurred to me that every new set of strings would require another set up. I seldom change strings as I like the sound of my Rotos when they've been on for a while, but I might just fire a set of flats on and never have to worry about changing the strings ever again
Yes, it's funny how when I want my old bass from home to have a set-up it's imperative for it to have new strings. Yet if I buy a bass from the shop and they do a set-up for me when I buy it, the old strings are perfectly good for a few more months. Funny that...
But is it actually neccessary? Or is it just to make a few extra quid? The reason I ask is because you said the shop had told you that a set up would be a waste of time without them. Is there a justification for it? I would have thought that a set up would be better with old strings on the basis that new strings will stretch and settle in, so a set up that suits a new set might not be right for the strings a month or two later.
The bass was an Ibanez EBS600, No real problems but a slight buzz at the 9th fret on the E string. I was a noob and didn't know what the problem was. So I took it into the Bishops Stortford shop and was simply told, it needs a setup, £75 please. I agreed and left it there. I got a phone call later suggesting a new set of strings; £25 more or the set up would be a waste of time.
Is it normal to be told you have to buy new strings when getting a set up? This was the last couple of times I had a bass set up, even though I told the tech that I didn't want them, and that I preferred my fat, old strings. This was in more than one shop, so I assumed it was standard practice, if a bit unusual because I always believed the bass should be set up to the owner's requirements. That's why I do my own set ups now, although I might have to get someone else to take a look at the truss on my P Bass.

1. Fender Precision 2. Fender '51 Precision RI with flats That's all I think I'd really want, I'm not overly fussy.

So just to confirm, this is nothing to do with free £20 notes for pianists?
I'm agonising whether or not to put covers on mine. I like the look of them, I like the fact that the pup cover allows me to play a bit closer to the bridge but it's the idea of drilling holes that puts me off.
Mine already has the holes, drilled by a previous owner, who did a horrible job of it. When one of the holes by the bridge was drilled it split the finish so there's a 5mm sized bit of the finish missing, so putting a cover back over the bridge would actually cover it up.

Can anyone identify this? Help needed!
Jono Bolton replied to FlatEric's topic in General Discussion
Never seen that before, what exactly is it for? Is there a similar product you can use? -
Also, pobrien_ie and yepmop are really making me want to get a set of covers for my Precision. A bridge cover at the very least.
