1. Didn't you have a replacement bridge on this? A Hipshot or something like that, or did I imagine it?
2. Best South Park character ever! Welcome to the forum!
3.
The black looks great but IMHO a tort guard will look even better. Check this link for what it looks like on my Paul Simonon replica, made by BC's master luthier Paul Rose (aka Prosebass) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=simonon
+1. The tort guard on the P Bass you sold me looks ace Clarky, I see what you meant about the Fender ones looking cheap too. I had been planning on swapping the tort for a black gurad but I think I'm keeping it 'as is' for the minute.
4. I've got plain black Dimarzio Clip Lock straps on both my basses. I had a 3" one but didn't like the look, so now I use the 2" version.
5. I bought a vintage-style Fender bridge from Ray. Mint bridge, and quick delivery, and he kept me up to date all the way. Great guy, this is the way to sell stuff on Basschat. Couldn't recommend him highly enough, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again.
6.
tryed one out this afternoon and thought it was ok but not for me unfortunately,so it looks like a squier cv 60's p-bass is the one i shall be having when i get round to it!pmt had the mustang priced at £499 which i thought was a bit much considering the squier is £259 and is imo vfm!
I tried both and thought the complete opposite. I thought the Squier was really heavy even for a P, and thought it felt rather cheap. I may just have picked up a bad one though.
7. 1. Washburn 35W combo to... 2. Peavey TNT 115 300W combo to... 3. Ashdown ABM EVO II 325W head and MAG 410T cab to... 4. Ashdown ABM EVO II 325W head and ABM 210T. I reckon I'll eventaully add another 210T if I ever need extra "oomph" for bigger gigs, but I'm happy with the current set up just now.
8.
Shame they don't import the california blue ones though I think mine looks alright in vintage white with with aged pearl pickguard though. I didn't like the original tort pg much.
I don't like the Fender tortoise shell PGs, they look cheap, like a tort design printed onto a scratchplate. I reckon if the stock plate was replaced with a proper celluloid one, it'd look the mutt's nuts. That said, your's looks purdy with the aged pearl JLP
9. I've used these before and I found that either the 2 parts seperated or would spin back round so that they were unlocked and start rattling around on the end pin. Personally, I use Dimarzio Clip Lock straps, which are screwed directly onto the bass, very sturdy and very secure. It does mean, though, that the strap is always on the bass, but that doesn't bother me. I use Grolsch washers on my Strat, which do a very good job AND it means I got to drink 2 bottles of Grolsch to attain them.
10. I use 84s in my MIM Jazz, and it transformed a good bass into a great bass IMO. A wide range of tones to be had, but at the minute my personal fave is the neck pickup up full, and the bridge turned right down, does an excellent P Bass impression.
11.
My CIJ one is my no 1 gigging bass. It sounds deeper & punchier than my precisons (all using TI flats - the 'tang has a 32" set), but I really love it for the super slim neck and excellent playability.
+1 I tried a CIJ Mustang a couple of weeks ago when I was shopping for a new bass and was thoroughly impressed by the excellent sound. Coupled with the light weight and short scale it, was tremendous fun to play, and you can pick them up for about £400 new too - bargain!
12. I'm not a fan of the 70's-style logo, but I'm glad the MIM range is finally available with a maple neck option, for ages a rosewood fingerboard was the only choice. Looks nice though, I'm sure it'll look cracking with a tort scratchplate too.
13.
I've ordered a Fender high mass vintage bridge as I want to play it with La Bella Deep Talkers which do not like to be strung through the body, plus I've no doubt the intonation will be much better with one saddle per string.
That the set up on my MIA P Bass, lovely sound!
14. I was tempted by the Jag Bass when I was shopping for a Precision a couple of weeks ago, but the only colour I like is the one that isn't available in the UK: Edit: But the Fender tortoise-shell scratchplate is foul. Clarky swapped the tort plate on the P Bass I bought from him for a celluloid WD one, and I'm so glad he did. The above bass would benefit from similar treatment.
15. Do you have any pics of the bridge? I'm interested.
16. First GAS was an American Standard P Bass I bought from Clarky off here. Arrived yesterday, as did a new Dimarzio strap, which was lucky.
17. I bought Clarky's MIA P Bass from him. Spoke to him last Thursday, put cash in his account on Friday, on Saturday he arranged a pickup for Monday and it was delivered on Tuesday. Absolutely seamless! Bass arrived well packed and exaclty as described. Wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again or recommend him a seller, wonderful chap!
18.
+1
-1 Personally, I've never understood why West Ham, Villa and Burnley have all chosen to go for that horrible claret/blue colour combo, it gives me the boke.
19.
A used HW1 won´t cost much more than a new Squier and will be a noticeably better bass, as will be a MIJ or CIJ. If you don´t mind a maple fretboard, the MIM 50´s Classic P is excellent for the money as well.
+1 I tried the 50s Classic P Bass the other day when I was shopping for a new P Bass and it was the best of all the basses I tried that day, but that's my opinion. I also tried a Highway 1 and a 60s Vibe Squier and I would say the difference between the two is night and day really. As good as every says the Squier's are, the Highway 1 in my opion was the superior instrument, and by a good deal too. The sound was better, the construction was a better standard, and I much prefer the finish on the Highway 1, the Squier's felt quite cheap and was pretty thickly applied.
20. I went bass shopping last weekend, and the main problem I had was with service. One store took ages before actually getting round to letting try a few things, none of which hadn't been within a mile of an Allen key, and in another the sales guy's respone to 'Can I please try that Highway 1 Precision?' was 'Yeah, uh, sure. Do want an American one or a Mexican one?' I left shortly after he plugged me into a 25W Laney combo. Top marks to the guy from Reverb (formerly Sound Control) for letting try the bass I wanted, as well as offering to let me try out a few others and giving a few sound recommendations, letting me use an Ashdown ABM 210 combo similar to the rig I currently use, and offering to do me a deal on the P I had initially gone in to try. Sadly, they only had it in red and said that they wouldn't get a black one in for a while, so the guy pointed me in the direction of an online store where I would save £80 on his price! Probably not the best idea if you're running a business but I genuinely felt guilty for not buying something from such a great sales guy.
21. I was trying new Precisions at the weekend and in one store I was told that these were to be a replacement for the Highway 1, so I took it to mean that they were MIA. Can't understand why they would get rid of the Highway 1s though, I tried a few on Saturday and they were all excellent.
22. I tried the Classic Vibe 60s P bass at the weekend, and it was a dog. To be honest though, I reckon it was just a bad one, but there were no other places in Glasgow that had one I could compare it to. I've got a Squier Standard Strat that I've had for 6-and-a-bit years now, and it's the best playing Strat I've ever come across. As Kev said, you'll need to try a few to find one that's right
23.
i've heard that from a number of sources, i think i'll be going with that! how hard is it to install new pickups?
It's simple if you know your way around a soldering iron. It's basically a case of disconnecting 2 wires per pickup, and reconnecting the corresponding 2 wires on the new pickup. Watch with the MIM Jazz pickups though, the bridge pickup and neck pickups are usually the same size, which means when you buy a replacement pair, they'll probably give you a larger one to put in the bridge which will go in, but it'll be a tight fit and may require some sanding. In my experience at least, although I know there are some others on here who've had the same issue.
24. IN Ashdown ABM 210 T cab Behringer Vintage Phaser OUT Fender Precision Ashdown MAG 410T Behringer Vintage Phaser Boss ODB-3 Squier Telecaster Custom I had a few money-related "issues" this year so I had to offload a few things, and also downsize my amp to find space for it in the flat I moved into in September, but for the first time in ages I'm making decent money and have actually got my arse in gear to set some aside so I can buy a new Precision in a couple of weeks time. My list has been "narrowed down" to 3-4, so I'm heading into Glasgow city centre on Saturday to try before I buy.
25.
The bassist from the Feeling plays one as well I believe?
Yep. He also gets to nail Sophie Ellis-Bexter too, the jammy bastard
