She has said she's going to buy a bass and I pointed out several decent buys within her apparent budget of £300, but weeks have gone by and she still keeps asking to use my stuff. I've told her that using it in the flat's ok, but I'm not keen on her taking it out because accidents happen. If she's willing to reimburse me for the bass plus any mods that can't be salvaged, that's fine, but I'd rather not get into that position in the first place.
I'd be fine letting her take the MIM jazz around but wouldn't be too happy about the Precision. I'm sure she'd be careful though, she's a girl!
The Jazz was a birthday present from Mother and Father Bolton a few years back, so the value is more sentimental than financial, I wasn't entirely convinced they could afford it TBH. The P was the result of hard slog and penny pinching, and was essentially a pricey way of finding out I'm a Jazz guy

My flatmate has recently volunteered her services as a bass player to a friend of ours, despite the fact that she doesn't own a bass. As you can see from my sig, I own some fairly decent (IMO) gigging bass equipment, having been playing for the past 12 years or so. So far my flatmate has been practicing on my Jazz in the flat, but now wants to start taking it round to our friends flat for rehearsals and eventually use it for gigging. I've yet to question her about it as it's not been a problem so far, but I'm fairly sure she said she would play bass on the assumption that she could use my gear as and when she pleases, as I'm not currently gigging. Am I being selfish if I refuse to continue letting her use my stuff? It's fine in the flat but I'm not really happy with my stuff being taken away for gigs/prectices. It's quite quiet folky music she's playing so it's unlikely there'll be any Who-style destruction, but I'm not really comfortable letting other folk use my gear. What are other people's view on lending out their stuff? My gear's insured against 3rd party damage but why should I put up my premium by claiming in the even of some breaking? I had to work and save the cash to pay for it, so surely I'm in the right here?
I'm pretty sure they're Switchcraft jack sockets on Fender American Standards. Mine is anyway! Not sure about the nut though.
Cheers Ray, looking for them online just now. Will nip into one of the guitar stores up here tomorrow to ask about the nut.

Will a 62 Precision scratchplate fit a Squier JV P-bass
Jono Bolton replied to Twigman's topic in Repairs and Technical
I have a Squier JV P-bass. The scratchplate is warped ( too much stuffing a plectrum behind it during gigs).... It is tortoiseshell ( I think it's 4 ply) and I was looking at this: http://www.allparts.uk.com/precision-bass-....html?p=product It has the correct number of holes (13) but will they be in exactly the same place? My current plate doesn't have a truss rod notch but this one does.... £46 seems a lot to sink without knowing for definite that it will fit. How could I know?
It might fit, but it's more than likely that it won't be perfect. To be honest, for about the same amount you could get a custom one done that would be a perfect fit. Try emailing WD, I usually go through them for a scratchplate and they're very helpful. -
Does anyone know what type of jack socket is used on the new Fender American Standards? I'm looking to upgrade the one on my Jazz from the stock cheapo one currently installed. Similarly, can anyone tell me what type of nut is on the American Standards? It's far superior to the Tusq one I have on the Jazz.
The black looks great but IMHO a tort guard will look even better. Check this link for what it looks like on my Paul Simonon replica, made by BC's master luthier Paul Rose (aka Prosebass) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=simonon
+1. The tort guard on the P Bass you sold me looks ace Clarky, I see what you meant about the Fender ones looking cheap too. I had been planning on swapping the tort for a black gurad but I think I'm keeping it 'as is' for the minute.

I've got plain black Dimarzio Clip Lock straps on both my basses. I had a 3" one but didn't like the look, so now I use the 2" version.

I bought a vintage-style Fender bridge from Ray. Mint bridge, and quick delivery, and he kept me up to date all the way. Great guy, this is the way to sell stuff on Basschat. Couldn't recommend him highly enough, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again.
tryed one out this afternoon and thought it was ok but not for me unfortunately,so it looks like a squier cv 60's p-bass is the one i shall be having when i get round to it!pmt had the mustang priced at £499 which i thought was a bit much considering the squier is £259 and is imo vfm!
I tried both and thought the complete opposite. I thought the Squier was really heavy even for a P, and thought it felt rather cheap. I may just have picked up a bad one though.

1. Washburn 35W combo to... 2. Peavey TNT 115 300W combo to... 3. Ashdown ABM EVO II 325W head and MAG 410T cab to... 4. Ashdown ABM EVO II 325W head and ABM 210T. I reckon I'll eventaully add another 210T if I ever need extra "oomph" for bigger gigs, but I'm happy with the current set up just now.
Shame they don't import the california blue ones though I think mine looks alright in vintage white with with aged pearl pickguard though. I didn't like the original tort pg much.
I don't like the Fender tortoise shell PGs, they look cheap, like a tort design printed onto a scratchplate. I reckon if the stock plate was replaced with a proper celluloid one, it'd look the mutt's nuts. That said, your's looks purdy with the aged pearl JLP

Simple, cheap straplocks. No screws needed. £4
Jono Bolton replied to solo4652's topic in Accessories and Misc
I've used these before and I found that either the 2 parts seperated or would spin back round so that they were unlocked and start rattling around on the end pin. Personally, I use Dimarzio Clip Lock straps, which are screwed directly onto the bass, very sturdy and very secure. It does mean, though, that the strap is always on the bass, but that doesn't bother me. I use Grolsch washers on my Strat, which do a very good job AND it means I got to drink 2 bottles of Grolsch to attain them. -
I use 84s in my MIM Jazz, and it transformed a good bass into a great bass IMO. A wide range of tones to be had, but at the minute my personal fave is the neck pickup up full, and the bridge turned right down, does an excellent P Bass impression.
My CIJ one is my no 1 gigging bass. It sounds deeper & punchier than my precisons (all using TI flats - the 'tang has a 32" set), but I really love it for the super slim neck and excellent playability.
+1 I tried a CIJ Mustang a couple of weeks ago when I was shopping for a new bass and was thoroughly impressed by the excellent sound. Coupled with the light weight and short scale it, was tremendous fun to play, and you can pick them up for about £400 new too - bargain!

I'm not a fan of the 70's-style logo, but I'm glad the MIM range is finally available with a maple neck option, for ages a rosewood fingerboard was the only choice. Looks nice though, I'm sure it'll look cracking with a tort scratchplate too.
I've ordered a Fender high mass vintage bridge as I want to play it with La Bella Deep Talkers which do not like to be strung through the body, plus I've no doubt the intonation will be much better with one saddle per string.
That the set up on my MIA P Bass, lovely sound!
-
I was tempted by the Jag Bass when I was shopping for a Precision a couple of weeks ago, but the only colour I like is the one that isn't available in the UK: Edit: But the Fender tortoise-shell scratchplate is foul. Clarky swapped the tort plate on the P Bass I bought from him for a celluloid WD one, and I'm so glad he did. The above bass would benefit from similar treatment.

First GAS was an American Standard P Bass I bought from Clarky off here. Arrived yesterday, as did a new Dimarzio strap, which was lucky.

I bought Clarky's MIA P Bass from him. Spoke to him last Thursday, put cash in his account on Friday, on Saturday he arranged a pickup for Monday and it was delivered on Tuesday. Absolutely seamless! Bass arrived well packed and exaclty as described. Wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again or recommend him a seller, wonderful chap!

Squier 60's Classic Vibe P Bass v Fender Highway 1.
Jono Bolton replied to aceuggy's topic in Bass Guitars
A used HW1 won´t cost much more than a new Squier and will be a noticeably better bass, as will be a MIJ or CIJ. If you don´t mind a maple fretboard, the MIM 50´s Classic P is excellent for the money as well.
+1 I tried the 50s Classic P Bass the other day when I was shopping for a new P Bass and it was the best of all the basses I tried that day, but that's my opinion. I also tried a Highway 1 and a 60s Vibe Squier and I would say the difference between the two is night and day really. As good as every says the Squier's are, the Highway 1 in my opion was the superior instrument, and by a good deal too. The sound was better, the construction was a better standard, and I much prefer the finish on the Highway 1, the Squier's felt quite cheap and was pretty thickly applied.
