1. Yep, I initially passed over it because the layout isn't the best but they have everything you could ever want, the prices are great and the customer service is impeccable! I don't go anywhere else now for bits and bobs, unless it's something hard to find, in which case it's usually something that WD or Allparts can order in.
2. Hi all. [s] I've bits and pieces that I don't need anymore. First is a new and unused Seymour Duncan SPB-2 for P Bass. I bought it for my P Bass but had to sell it just after it arrived so never even got round to opening the box! I paid about £42 for it, then got stung with a £15 customs fee from FedEx. Yours for £42, or I'll trade you for a decent Jazz Bass bridge pickup.[/s] Next is a set of 3 flat top, chrome barrel knobs. I put them on my Jazz a couple of months ago but decided I want to put traditional Jazz Bass knobs back on it. Cost me £8.10 ([email protected] each) for the set, yours for £6 I also have a couple of original bits from my MIM Jazz. I've got a neck pickup for £12, a bridge pickup for £12 or both for £20, and a bridge for £9. All the MIM bits are in full working order and in very good condition. All prices include postage![s][/s]
3.
I bought a Fender thumbrest recently and it came with this useful diagram for the Precision and Jazz basses : Hope this is useful Andy
Very, thanks Andy!
4.
Only a suggestion, but why don't you just stick your thumb on either of the pickup covers?
Because I don't plan on using it, but I like the way they look. I mainly use a pick to play, so it's just a cosmetics thing.
5.
PM'd
And replied!
6. I fancy putting a thumb rest on my Jazz but can't decide where it should go. It's purely for cosmetic reasons, but I don't know where to put it. I'm fairly certain I don't want a "tug bar" i.e under the strings. Can anyone post some pictures of their Jazz's or something? It's either going to go between the neck pickup and the neck, or above the neck pickup, these seem to be the accepted positions for thumb rests. Cheers guys!
7. Thank you Paul! I find it's best to be up front with stuff like this, that way everyone's happy. Unless someone else takes them before the bass goes, I'll do it with the Gotoh 201 and the black scratchplate for £220
8. I'm lucky, my MIM Jazz was an 18th birthday pressie a few years ago so I feel obliged to keep hold of it, but I lucked out and got an absolute belter! Very good quality and well put together, even if it's not the colour I wanted. I only had a wee issue with the neck pocket, but it's no biggie. Anyway, so far I've stuck a Seymour Duncan SJB-3 in the neck and put a Badass II on it at a total cost of about £70. I'll probably stick another pickup in the bridge at some point, but that means for just over £100 or so, I've made an already good bass better, and since I'd never sell it for sentimental reasons, I'm glad I'm "stuck" with a good bass as opposed to a pig. I think with Mexican basses the QC is pretty hit and miss, and some folk'll find a belter and some folk'll find firewood. I reckon modding a Mexican Fender is a good project, but it's worthwhile taking the time to find a decent starting point, not just grabbing the first one that turns up on ebay.
9. PM'd, and original post amended. I'm keeping the Badass and I've knocked a fiver off the Gotoh.
10.
I've been trying to find out what the "upgrades" were and when they started. I have a MIM Standard Jazz 5 of 1999/2000 vintage and the pickups are very weak. From the positive comments I guess the more recent ones have fixed that.
I've got a MIM Precision from the same year (2000) and The pickup is the complete opposite, it's really meaty and very high output. The pickups on my Jazz were pretty weak, I've replaced the neck pickup and now I've got a nice blend between the 2.
11. Love that Hot Rod P!
12. Cheers Kev, thought I'd keep it low cos I need to make a fairly quick sale, which means no trades, sorry Higgie.
13. Not a fan of black pearl by any measure.
14. Thanks Steve! I know there's a couple of other Mexican Ps on here just now, I hope folk don't think I'm being a c*** and trying to under-cut the other guys but I thought the price was a good 'un considering the age, condition and the mods, but also I need to make a pretty quick sale.
15. That's really nice ritch! Was it a pricey job, if you don't mind me asking? Would it not have been cheaper to buy a similar neck from, say, Allparts or WD?
16. More pictures folks, they wouldn't all fit in the first post! Scratch in the finish: Hairline crack: The white scratchplate has aged nicely, but as you can see, it's still white under the knobs: The bass will be shipped in this case. Stickers can be removed (or kept) if you want:
17. Hi all! My flatmate and I foolishly didn't pay Council Tax last year after we finished uni, so I need to make up some cash sharpish. Sadly, that means I'll had to move on my P-Bass. Standard Mexican affair, I picked this up off ebay last year. The serial No. puts it as a 2000 model, and the poor thing looked like the previous owner hadn't a clue about bass care. It was dirty, the strings I don't think had been changed and the action was terrible, but she's in pretty good nick now. There's a few things I've changed on it. Firstly, I swapped the original Strat-style knobs for a couple of metal barrel types. The nut has been replaced with a Tusq nut in place of the original plastic one. I've put a set of Dunlop Straploks on it, and I'll include the Ernie Ball strap with the bass as it has the the other end of the locks on it. The bridge has been replaced with the bridge that was originally on my Jazz. The Jazz is a later model and the bridge is a bit thicker than the original Precision one. I've cleaned the whole thing up, and recently cleaned all the wee metal parts with Methylated spirits, and sanded down the back of the neck with 600 grit wet and dry paper to get rid of the sticky finish on it. Now, as it's knocking on 9 years old, there are a couple of dings, but nothing major and I've included them in the pics where possible. They are: a tiny ding on the back of the neck, behind the 1st fret a 1" scratch between the bridge and the knobs (I couldn't get a pic of this one) another on the bottom bout of the bass which faces the floor a little dent on between the forearm contour and the belly chamfer and one last ding on the underside of the headstock. There's a wee bit of "buckle rash" on the back, but not much as it hasn't been used much. Now for the pictures! I used my girlfriend's camera which I've never used before, so I tried my best and can get more if anyone needs them. Some are a little out of focus but are the best I could muster. I'm looking for £200 for this. I have no problem shipping it at the buyers expense. The bass was shipped in its case to me and is pretty sturdy if not a bit basic. Apologies for such a huge thread but I feel when you're dealing with stuff like this it's best to be honest and open about everything so everyone's happy. I have a couple of extra P Bass bits. I was planning on keeping hold of them as I plan on replacing it when I can afford to again, but if the buyer wanted to they could have a black P bass scratchplate for another £10, a Seymour Duncan SPB-2 (new, unused and in its box) for £40, a Gotoh 201 bridge for £15 and [s]a Badass II for £40 (but I'd rather keep that, hence the high price).[/s] These bits are also available seperately if anyone is interested. PM me if you're interested or with offers, I'll try and get back to you ASAP. Cheers for looking guys!
18.
Windowlene spray, to get the crap off, then Autoglym paint restorer, to remove any surface scratches.
Does the Autoglym work then? I was looking at something similar the other day in Halfords, I forget what, but it said it was an abrasive, and I'd be too scared to use it in case it makes matters worse, but there's a little bit of buckle rash on the back of my Precision that I want rid of.
19.
The Strat style knobs were on the late 90's and early 00's Jazzes I know that much. To be honest i've never seen a Precision with strat style knobs..
Mine is a 2000 model that I bought about 8 months ago, and that had Strat knobs that were swiftly changed.
20. I had the neck pickup of my Jazz replaced with a Duncan SJB-3 and it does the same thing. For the purposes of ease of use, when I put new knobs on, I turned them both up full then made sure screws faced the same way (making sense?). I've found that it's not when the volumes are full, but when they're both in the same position that the volume almost completely drops out and as a result sounds really thin. Someone suggested that they could have been wired in series, but I just make sure one pickup is up more than the other.
21.
Metal's a big part of my background & musical taste, & is a significant influence on my band - but I wouldn't define myself as a metal bassist. Funny, that. Jon.
+1 on that. My band plays more blues and 'Classic Rock' inspired stuff, but our synth/keys player is into his prog-metal like Tool and Isis, whilst I like more brutal stuff. Anyone else like Converge on here? That said, I'll give pretty much anything a shot, but Dan Carter's Rock Show and Mike Davies' Punk Show on a Monday night is pretty much my cup of tea, as opposed to the stuff played on Radio 1 during the day. 12-4am on a Monday night is where it's at!
22.
i cant show you but i can tell. (COMPS IS TOOOOO OLD). squire p bass white. well thats about it sounds gay ey? to bad its not.. IT POWNS
What does 'powns' mean? I've seen a few folk using the term but can't think what it could mean. Is it some kind of moronic TXT SPK?
23.
If it's any help, Gordon Moakes uses Ashdown ABM amps, and you might be able to see his settings in this picture: Edit: He's got the input at about 10 o'clock, bass boosted very slightly (less than 1 o'clock), mids boosted to about 2 o'clock, treble at 1 o'clock, valve drive at 2 o'clock, the compression knob appears to have fallen off, but it looks like he's marked it as being off anyway, valve drive at nearly 3 o'clock and subharmonics at nearly 3 o'clock. So, yeah... a frown shape. I'm not sure what the box is on top of the amp.
His EQ is almost exactly the same as mine, right down to the amount of Valve Drive, it's startling. But if he's using a Mexican bass (again, like me) then he's probably doing what I do and keep the sound bassy enough without it turning to mud.
24. Major GAS! I was sold on that 50's style P, but having seen that Sonic Blue 60's style I'm torn! Definitely some Gassing in the near future!
25. I'd like my Peavey Foundation back. That was my first bass and wasn't anything special but it was pretty solid. I'd want it more for nostalgia than anything else. I really wish I still had my salmon pink Danelectro U2. Got it for £60, sold it for the same and the guy I sold it to moved away. I'd love to have that one back in my possession. I'm going to have to move on my Precision soon too, but it's only a Mexican one and I can pick up another easily enough.
