1.
My personal bane: Support bands that overrun and then wander off stage after their set without bothering to move their gear out of your way and then get arsey when you move one of their guitars.
How about support bands that leave immediately after their set, taking all their gear with them that they'd told you and the promoter that you could borrow? It was only one guitar amp, and the sound man had a store room packed with tasty amps, but the band in question were meant to be headlining, turned up late for soundcheck and announced that they'd sold no tickets. And they'd sneaked all their gear out while the promoter was working her arse off trying to get stuff sorted out and not tell her that they were leaving. Unsurprisingly they were an arrogant bunch because they'd got to the quarter-finals of some Battle of the Bands.
 2. I'm tempted to get an OLP and do this sort of thing: Neepheid's 'Pimp Mah OLP' Thread Simple but effective mods for an OLP to make it a great bass for not a lot of scratch. A router is needed, but as OldGit points out you can get a bettery box routed and installed for £20. To save extra cash, there's a couple of nice OLPs in the Marketplace.
 3. If you want to post photos, upload them to an image hosting website such as photobucket.com, and then click on the IMG code (it copies automatically) then paste it in your post when you're replying to a topic. I think it automatically resizes them too. I'm not totally sure but I've never had a problem with pictures being to large. Good luck with the sale too, I was thinking about getting one of these but they're pretty hard to come by, and Sod's Law seems to dictate that whenever something I want comes up at a great price I'll be totally broke. If you want to hold it for me and let me pay in monthly installments of £25 let me know
 4.
the squier is a top runner at the moment - i've just been a bit put off by its looks, might see if i can double sided tape a pickguard to it. in an ideal world, it would be black/tort - but i dont think thatll happen.
I was gonna suggest sticking a scratchplate on it, but why not just get it fitted properly and drill screw holes in it? A scratchplate would set you back about £20
 5. Last night I dreamed I had an SX SPB-57 3TS, which is this one: I think it's a sign, although recently I've been gassing over any '57 style P.
 6.
lets forget it wasn't played by the bassist !!
7. I think The National Anthem by Radiohead is a good example of an "uninteresting" bassline being important to the song. It's drives the track along and loops over and over while it's everything else that does all the interesting stuff. 4 notes is all it is but anything else just wouldn't work. I'd rather listen to a good song than an average one with an interesting bass line.
 8. Not anymore, but I have done in the past. And always failed. Now my folks just ask me what I want. It was a new pickup last year for the P.
 9. I cheated and searched for it, I didn't want to wait til tomorrow for pics. It looks a beast! Good buy!
 10.
£200? Did I read that right? Looks like a bit of a bargain that
+1 My MIM Jazz is from the same year ('03) and it's a quality bass, clearly I managed to avoid one of the pigs that escape the Mexican QC sometimes. Would've loved it in this colour though. Is that scratchplate a replacement or the original one?
 11.
well, the part itself doesn't have to be jaw-dropping, as long as it fits in with the tune.
+1 One of my bands songs isn't overly complicated but it's all about dynamics and ends on a massive crescendo. The bassline for it is just root notes because I've tried doing something more "interesting" but it doesn't work for the song. Although the ending has some nice droning/chord stuff that's pretty good.
 12. I've seen them, I desperately need one, but $84 is not something I have lying about sadly. And I'd have to get 2 because sometime I use the Jazz and sometimes I use the Precision. Bah! Don't they need a bit of tweaking after you flick it back up to E?
 13. Between songs we do lots of prog sound-scaping, and I take this opportunity to re-tune as it seems to be only me that has to change between standard tuning and drop D. Sadly, our keyboard/synth player likes using lots of high frequencies that play havoc with my tuner (Boss TU-2). After a minute or so of trying to get in tune and failing miserably, I have to turn it off and tune by ear, which looks and sounds crap on stage.
 14.
Yeah - as the strings slowly get dirtier and lose their edge, you don't notice the bass sounding duller. Then all of a sudden you think the bass doesn't sound as good as it used to. Give the strings a boil or buy a new set - it's like a new bass again, nearly.
Or clean them with meths, apparently. There was a thread up on here not that long ago which suggested cleaning your strings with methylated spirit to dissolve all the crap out of them. Just not crystal meth, obviously.
 15. From what's been said on the SX Owners Gallery thread in the Bass Porn section of Basschat, the SX basses that come in the starter packs have 21 frets as opposed to 20 frets on the ones that Rondo sell individually and aren't as good quality.
 16.
Yeah I know, probably one of the most talked about brands on the net of recent times, but has anyone here imported one into the country yet? I'm really considering importing one from Rondo as a workhorse, but am always a bit cautious about buying from abroad. Any opinions on SX/accounts of experiences with Rondo apreciated!
To answer the question (assuming you've not searched already) I think the only way to get an SX branded bass is to import them from Rondo. So yes, pretty much anyone on here with an SX has had it imported and said the experience has been fine. I say 'SX branded' because other basses are apparently the same thing, but with a different name on the headstock but are readily available in the UK (Jim Deacon being one)
 17. PM'd Steve, cheers!
 18. Has anyone got any spare wire for connecting electrics inside a guitar/bass? Maybe you've finished a project and have a wee bit left over that you don't need? I'm looking for somewhere in the region of 1/2 a metre, if anyone has some? Cheers
 19.
Unfortunately it's really hard to see much useful detail from the typically rubbish Ebay pics - when your friend gets the bass, try & get some clearer & more detailed photos. Headstocks, pickups, bridge, neckplates etc are useful clues for getting an idea about age & origin - and the pics here succeed in hiding most of these quite well! My first impression is mid-late 60s, possibly Aria-related (although it's not a 1220 - this had a 335-body shape & offset dot markers, afaik) - and I think, from what I can see from the photos - it's related to this: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18646 Compare the neck/headstock particularly - if it turns out the semi has a zero-fret, squared fretboard corners & plastic laminate overlay on the head - that's a positive comparison. Still won't tell us what it actually is - but it's a good start as clues go. Jon.
There's definitely a zero-fret there.
 20. I'm thinking about getting my gear covered against theft, breakdown etc. and I want to know what my options are. I'm currently looking at the Musicguard website and for the total amount of my gear (£1200-ish) I'm looking at £6.59 a month via Direct Debit, or £70 in one go. Clearly at that price it's pretty much a no-brainer, and that's including my gear being covered away from the 'insured location' (my house), in-vehicle and breakdown cover. Does anyone else use Musicguard, or what alternatives are there?

 22.
I do.... (and thank you!) and No, its not a Gothic thing.... it just looks right on light wood.... Dontcha think?
Nope, I think it looks right on the right wood. It works for the Blazer, I don't think any other colour would look good on it, but my general pecking order for hardware is: -Chrome -Black -Gold (bleurgh!) Although it's entirely subjective. As tacky as I think it looks, certain occasions call for gold hardware. Squier did a really nice trans red 5 string P as part of the Pro Tone series, with a white pearl scratchplate and gold hardware. That was ball-drainingly sexy.
 23.
o yeah, and i'd said it on the page before lol. i think he's quite good, he puts a lot of small fills and moves around a lot, even if it is just moving around on the major and pentatonic scales, its more than most in that genre do. i think hes undderated because everyone thinks he just follows roots like all punk bassists, but he really doesnt.
I dunno, he's pretty typical of most pop punk bassists. Pretty much all of them played in the same style using the major and pentatonic scales, it's all dead simle and not very inspired. I dug out my Drive Thru Records box set the other day, it's got NFG, The Starting Line and The Movielife EPs in it and all the bass playing is more or less the same.
 24.
Not with Operation Ivy he didn't, nor here. Though I admit the internet often lies like a bitch. And Freeman is jolly good whatever.
My info comes from seeing him live and also from an interview he did in a Total Guitar Bass Special. I think he did use a pick early on and progressed onto finger style. Definitely now he's pretty much just fingers, Maxwell Murder solo and all.
