1. I found the MAG to be a more modern sound than the ABM, and the MAG has a more cutting sound as well. The OD pedal I was using when I gigged with a MAG head was more suitable than when I've used it with my ABM. Definitely agree with the ABM being more vintage sounding, but I reckon the MAG is more versatile. Sadly the MAG looks rubbish. I'm tempted to get a MAG head as well as my ABM and stack them so I can swap about whenever I want, especially if you can pick them up for £100 or so. Also, Ashdown's customer service is brilliant.
2. No problem. I bought a wiring kit for a Strat from them but I think that was to ambitious for my first attempt at wiring, so I decided to try again with an H/H/3 way switch config. to see if it's any easier. Single conductor wire humbuckers are the way forward!
3. They do have complete wiring kits for a P Bass. Here. Just scroll down til you find it (about half way)
4.
Ultimately its up to Kev how much he sells it for. Unless he has broken some sort of agreement that he shouldnt buy somethng and then move it on (which I doubt very much would stand scrutiny of lawyer) then its his to do with as he wishes. Its not up to others to judge if he's right or wrong to do it. ANYTHING is only worth what someone id prepared to pay for it, if he can get more then good luck to him but please stop flaming him for trying.
No flaming here, just a bit of "constructive criticism"
5.
my definition of a Bass Snob would be someone who when the chips are down and he's broken his bass and hasn't got a spare would refuse my offer of a Squier VMJ... or would insist on putting masking tape over the logo...
+1
6.
...other than those already mentioned: Kim Deal, and Kim Gordon.
Whilst I love Pixies and the Youth, I've never really rated either Kims as great players. Solid and tasteful, and some great lines, but not technically great. I don't know, I'm torn. I have though been considering the idea that if you want a great alt-rock band, get a girl called Kim on bass
7. To be fair, Iceni aren't a well known brand, and not a lot of people would be looking for them. Also most folks on ebay are out looking for a bargain, so a lot of people would've seen it, not known what it was and not bid on it. Fender is a well known brand and a lot of people would bid for the fact it has Fender across the headstock. If it was started at £100 or so (or even 99p as Jon suggests) it would make £500 easily, £100 more than you paid for it.
8.
Tina Weymouth
Good call!
9.
I don't expect anyone to be impressed....
+1 I don't think anyone has a list of gear in their sig to impress anyone (although that might be the case for some people), but mainly because others find it interesting. I know I do, and I have a list of gear in my sig on the off chance that other people are interested, and if you take a look at it, it's not very impressive at all.
10. If you really begrudge paying £18, you could try Highly Strung. About half way down they have Precision scratchplates starting at £11. They're made by Venom, and look a bit cheap close up, especially the packaging, but they're alright. I think they're made to fit MIM Fenders, I got one for my Jazz and I know others on here have too and the screw holes line up but there's a fair old gap between the scratchplate and the control plate on mine.
11.
I checked that site the other day actually, but I just thought it was expensive, I mean, £18 for a black SP? then posting, hummm, seams a lot of a piece of plastic. its £10 just for the plastic which I also thinks quite expensive for what it is. Might wait around and see if anyones selling a 2nd hand one or if i get bored at the guitard shop this weekend I might pick one up if they have one in.
£18 for a black scratchplate is a good price. It'll be 3 bits of plastic laminated together, and cut to shape. Postage is free from Axes'r'us, like neepheid said. At the end of the day, you're not just paying for a piece of plastic, you're paying for the skills that are needed to make the scratchplate as well as the tools too. If you think £18 is too much, I suggest you buy the pickguard blank and try making it yourself, then see if you think £18 is too much.
12.
dunno if anyone else or i've already said this i've only read to page 6, but who's the guy who plays for rancid? he's great. also ben osmundson of zebrahead, and ian gushka of new found glory can both be quite good. i never hear anyone mention any of these guys, i think they deserve a little more recognition than they get.
Matt Freeman from Rancid was mentioned way back. But he's actually brilliant. Maxwell Murder's a 'must hear' track, phenomenal solo. He only plays finger-style too.
13. Very nice Burpster, another top job! You certainly have a penchant for black hardware don'cha?
14. That big bit of plastic he stuck on the forearm chamfer can't be anything but uncomfortable. I like the pickup combo though. If you could get it cheap it could be an interesting project.
15.
Is that the one that some time ago didn't have the bridge pickup installed, even though it had the hole and the seller also had the bridge pickup?
Nope. It was up for sale on here about 2 weeks ago and caused quite a ruckus.
16. Red P Bass - £750
17.
Hmm. Do either of those suggestions include places to buy them new? That's what the post was asking (and I'm interested too...) :-)
Actually he said he'd been checking out the second hand market but would be willing to buy new, so he didn't actually specify. I see no need to buy new, especially with MIM stuff. By buying it you cut the resale value down to about £200 for a stock bass anyway, and you can get some decent stuff second hand. You run a bit of a risk by buying from the likes of ebay if you can't try it first, but there's just the same chance that the shop will send out a pig of an instrument that occasionally slip through Fender's QC. My Jazz was bought new, and my P was second hand and half the price of the the Jazz. I did have to clean it and set it up but that's worth it to save £150 on a new bass. And if you really need to buy a new bass, you can get new ones on ebay.
18. When I was about 8/9 we used to get music lessons at primary school from the two teachers of the local high school. We'd get the lessons once a week and they'd take it in turns to teach us (one one week, then the other one the next week). Anyway, one week the better teacher brought in a Jim Deacon P bass copy and a Park combo. The bass was about as tall as me and it took two of us to lift the amp. Everyone had a go on the bass but I was the only one that carried it on, spurred on by the fact that I'd be the only one playing it and have first dibs on it. I was given a stack of tabs and shown how to play the first one, which was 'Rock Around the Clock' and just worked my way through the rest. Considering I've been playing for about 12 years now, I really should be much better.
19. I definitely prefer that ESP to the Gibbo.
20. That headstock logo is brilliant
21. The Basschat Marketplace? Or ebay. I got mine for £200 posted, with a flightcase too.
22. Old Gibson EBs had them too I think. Agree with wotnwhy about the RIM headstocks, but not a fan of Ampeg ones.
23.
dunno how it can be "better" than an OLP when it doesn't have the right pickup.
It's probably not, but when people are trying to sell something that's not the genuine article on ebay they often make a point of berating licensed sopies (OLP/Squier/Epiphone etc.) in order to make theirs sound better. I'm amazed at the amount of listings I've seen for cheapo Precision or Jazz copies that are supposedly better than Squiers or even Mexican Fenders. Still, most of the time no one's really fooled. FWIW OLPs are really nice, and an MM2 or MM3'll probably be my next purchase.
24. Sexy? Really? Wouldn't fancy any splinters down there!
25. If the Blazer is anything to go by then this'll look great, looking forward to it! Although does the new scratchplate mean you got rid of the tort?
