1. I've got an ABM 300 head, and I've had it for 4 months or so and it's worked fine. Jay_249 on here had it before me, and he didn't have any problems with it either. Great sound too, perfect in my opinion but I know it's not to everyones taste.
2. Hello! I've got an SD Quarter Pounder for the neck position that I'm thinking about replacing. It's about a year or so old if I remember correctly, but it's a bit aggressive for me though. A link to the Seymour Duncan page here. It's in very good nick, I'm looking for about £30 posted o.n.o unless I'm being unrealistic, I know how people on here love to let you know when you're asking for too much for something, but really I'd like to do a trade for something like an SJB-1 or 2, or something similar. Any questions feel free to drop me a line.
3. Yep, loads of bargains in the second hand section, even try evilbay. You could easily pickup a second hand Mexican Fender for a couple of hundred quid and use the difference to replace some of the weaker elements, such as bridge and pickups. There was even a Highway 1 that went for £300. Squier VMs are very good too, as are some of the OLPs. I personally like Andy67s Squier VM TB, which for £175 gets you the bass with a DiMarzio pickup, Schaller tuners, Fender deluxe thru string bridge and a gig bag, AND it's delivered! If I wasn't so skint I'd have had it already. As you can see, it's in my wish list
4.
Yes, sadly. A job I was taking up has fallen through, and for some reason, Mrs BORN "B MILD isn't keen on selling the house so I can keep it.
Tut tut, so many people on here sell lovely basses/bikes due to spousal pressure. As the man of the house, you should out your foot down and tell her you're keeping the bike and you're off to live in a council house whether she likes it or not! Don't forget to add that if she behaves, you might let her stay in the bedroom and put the bike in the garage
5. Andy, you are a terrible, terrible man, taunting me with your Ashdown cabs and your pretty basses! If only I wasn't poor...
6. So how long does a Shuker generally take to complete? I hear a lot of people complaining about the wait!
7. I have an '04 Mexican Jazz and a 2000 Mexican Precision. The Jazz feels really good, well put together, nice finish, lovely neck, the only problems were with a funny neck pocket, average pickups and crappy bridge. The neck pocket cut isn't a big deal, just a bit unsightly, and the pickups and bridge were easily fixed (SD Quarter Pounders and a BadAss II). The Precision I bought second hand. I don't know how much that contributes to the following, but probably not a lot. It doesn't feel as good quality, the neck isn't as nice (and that's not just a Precision/Jazz difference thing, it's really not as nice), and the pickups were even weaker than the Jazz's. It's probably equivalent to the Squier Std P-Bass Special in my local guitar shop. They were built about 4 years apart so that might be a contributing factor. I tried similar Precision at the same time I was testing out my Jazz, and that was very good, but it was the day after my 18th birthday, so in my hungover state I wasn't really prepared to handle to the weight of the P Wandered a bit off topic there! Anyway, my point, hard to find in all that, is that MIM stuff can vary greatly. I'd put my Jazz up against a MIA or MIJ in terms of quality any day. The Precision has the same mods as the Jazz, but it's just not as nice. It is a good bass, but it doesn't have the same feel. The sound though is great with the new pickup and bridge, really full and meaty, but the build isn't as good. Just my 2p there.
8.
nice jag !
There's something about the Jag basses that to me doesn't look right. When I was younger I wanted a bass in a Jazzmaster shape, and I suppose this is as close as I'll get, but the only one that really gets me going is the sunburst/tortoise plate combo. EDIT: worked it out, it's the top horn that bugs me, it looks too small in comparison with the bottom one. Also I hear they're heavy as hell.
9. That sounds very Primus
10.
It was pretty faded, you cant really see from the pics (gonna take better ones with a cam when I start spraying etc) The colour it started as is lovely, under the scratch plate its a really nice metalic green/blue, and when I started rubbing it down the colour shone through, but its gone too far now to keep it that colour, plus I fancied a change. My music shop called me back saying they got some badass ii bridges in, £65!!! I think ill be getting them imported instead Neck should arrive this week I hope, if its here on friday then I know what im doing this weekend!! might have to wait for the pots/pups/bridge though. I found out on friday my car MOT ran out that day.. and well.. I ended up buying a new car cause I pretty much ran the last one into the ground. so im a little broke at the mo.
Shameless plug for my BA II, in the Other Musical Equipment section of the Marketplace. Looking for £30-35, PM me for more details.
11.
Gotoh bridge, Wizard pup, tort plate, big fat set of strings, put it all together and play for 2-3 years on a high heat. Tastey. Don't spray it, it's gorgeous.
+1
12. Cheers for that steve. It looks pretty familiar, I'm sure I saw a similar one on ebay. A Matsumoko I think, Jon'll probably be able to tell you. That's a real shame about the fingerboard though
13. Yep, it's a pain in the arse having to get it filed, cost me another tenner on top of the what I paid for it
14. It's not still here, and it's not going to be yours for £35 o.n.o plus £2 p+p. It has been filed to accommodate my strings (45-100), but will take most gauges, I've had both lighter and heavier strings on it.
15. Am I the only person more interested in that bass behind the Jazz? The one that's got no tuners or knobs on it? The Jazz is lovely though, very nice!
16. A quick question about the SX 5s: Rondo describes them as 4+1, is that just a reference to the headstock layout or is it because it's a 4 string neck with 5 strings on it? The necks look pretty skinny. Link to a 5 string 75-style SX Jazz bass
17. Also if you're using an active bass make sure you have the active switch pressed in, and if you have a passive bass make sure it's out.
18.
Allparts http://www.allparts.uk.com/gotoh-bass-brid....html?p=product Peter
Ta much
19. Where can you get the Gotoh 201s from? I've tried looking for a chrome 4 string one but to no avail. I know Warmoth do them but I'm credit cardless and so can't order one from there.
20. I'm heading up to Glasgow tomorrow and I normally park near guitarguitar. I looked at the website the other day and they're doing an Epiphone El Segundo for a quid under £130. There's no cutaway (sad times) but I might go and see if they have one I can have a go on.
21. Probably should've mentioned that I'm not looking to buy just now, but just wanted some suggestions for when I do manage to scrape some cash together. Obviously by then I would've had a chance to try some myself but I know nothing about acoustic basses and so was just after some that I should keep an eye out for, although that Washburn is gorgeous! I saw that no name that you saw darxide, if you could let me know how it is that would be great!
22.
well jono, good news is I work in glasgow so would bring it through! bought it in January this year still have receipt. andy
You really know how to tempt a man. Is this 4 or 8 ohm? Ashdown has very few specs on the website.
23. I've decided I'd quite like an acoustic bass, mainly for pissing about in the house but also for possibly gigging. My band played an acoustic gig last year and hope to do it again, but I used my Jazz thru an Ampeg, just turned down a bit and with no effects. There was a Tanglewood acoustic in my local music shop that was pretty nice, it was about £250, but I don't know what the model was. Does anyone have one or know of one they would recommend for about £200? My local shop's only a wee one so everything gets sold at full rrp, so I assume I could get it for cheaper.
