1. I can't see a problem with any of the previous points -^ 1) No business is going to chuck xhundred quids worth of stuff out to an unknown customer without payment, not in the real world. 2) £30/40 to send it back is very fair - try hiring good kit for thirty days for that.......... 3) Alex is quite right to require customers to discuss their needs (I used email) - otherwise he could be on the end of a load of 'retail regret' returns. I found Barefaced to be honest, straightforward and keen to 'get it right'. OK, I bought something I like very much, so there is some bias here - -I realise that the sound/design/handles aren't to everyones taste, but Alex must be doing 'something' right !
2. I've mentioned this before, but a mate used to run a kit hire shop - he swore by Yamaha stuff - said it sounded 'right' and was (almost) idiot-proof plus it hardly ever went wrong..........
3. AOB - I'm in Torbay, have a couple of BF Dubsters in my lounge - you are welcome to pm me if you would like me to dem some music for you (I'm a sound system, so no real instrument inputs).....it might give you an idea (or two)....
4. Seems to be turning into a Carlsbro hate thread...... My first 'real' amp was a Grampian 50watt - weighed a ton & sounded like sh*te............
5. XLS 402

4-ohm Stereo (Per Channel): 450W
8-ohm Stereo (Per Channel): 300W
8-ohm Bridged-Mono: 900W
From the Crown website (discontinued model) hope it helps...... VVVVV umm VVVVV ??- (mine was from the Crown Google site on t'interweb.....)
6. Sad news - so much talent, so young. We are rapidly running out of our musical icons, it's very unnerving.........
7. I'm not selling my Dubsters anytime soon...........
8. There's a bit of a wiff here - it isn't 'exactly' illegal (imo), but the venue is misleading the punters...... It would probably be a good idea to (quietly) sort this out with the landlord for future reference. Personally, I'd probably not play there again - once a place has 'upset' me, I'd find another gig......
9. If you can get hold of some old-fashioned carpet felt, you can't go wrong.....
10. I had this with a Marshall 200 rackmount, which sounded like a bluddy tornado. My amptech sorted it by fitting three slower drive fans at the back............
11. I had two home-built cabs with TWO 18s in each, plus Vitavox 3cell horns....majik!
12. 'Fit for purpose' - is not appropriate here, unless the thing was obviously trashed prior to despatch.
13. Thanks BA - didn't know that - I only hope that the person on the end of the phone at CAB knows their stuff - I've lived in towns where CAB was staffed by numpties & used as a central needle exchange point..............
14. Trading Standards might be more use than CAB, who can be very patchy, depending on area, and staffing...........
15. I always insist on cash on collection. If someone really wants the kit, they will come for a day out at the seaside. They will like where I live, and I'll like their money..... (the kit will be Proper, as well)
16. I promoted in the 70's and employed many 'big' names. The average amp power seemed to be about 100watts per band member. (I got a lot of envy with the Ormats - smile).
17. Delighted........of course speakers are vitally important, but I can hear the difference between my Crown (class D - very surgically precise) and my Ormats (major valve grunt).
18. We're very close to getting on to the 'heft' thing here...........
19. Interesting - I won't be parting with my Dubsters anytime soon.........
20. I'm a sound system - in the early 70s I used two 100watt Vortexion s/s monoblocks and a 200watt Orange Matamp (valve)...I went over to a 200watt Ormat pa amp and the original 200 Ormat.....that lot was retired early 80s for a Soundcraft install amp (mosfet) which was capable of 1k.....I sold the lot in the 90's and started re-equiping. Currently I have a Crown XLS Drivecore 2k. As alternatives, I have around 800watts+ of Matamp/Ormat(different from the earlier stuff - KT120's) and/or a 200watt Marshall valve rackmount. You pays your money.... Back in the day, I think band amplification was generally bloody awful and the sheer wall of distortion actually made it sound louder than it really was. I like the fact that I've now got a fair amount of clean power on tap, so turning up the wick is no problem. BTW - I use two BF Dubsters and a pair of Mackie c200....it's plenty loud enough (!)
21. Oh dear, goodbye to yet another.......... R.I.P. & thank you........
22. So I'm standing in the shop when this gorilla staggers in and chucks a box clearly covered in 'fragile' tape on the counter with a resounding bang. 'Sbluddy eavy' it grunts - 'yes it would be' I reply, trying not to be annoyed. 'wassinnit?' it asks - 'a 1970 rock and roll amplifier' I reply. Gorilla grunts as I sign for it, and leaves. Fortunately my 100 Ormat was, fine, but needed a tech due to my buying from a not good 'dealer' - it was filthy inside and out, and needed recapping ('cleaned & serviced' the ad said) - it's now 101%. If anyone wants to know the 'dealer' feel free to pm (it wasn't packed well, either)......... I hate, loathe and detest couriers.
23. Have a mooch round the shops and start off with a weight check, then try the 'sound'. Think about getting a BF and giving it a (trial) go..Alex will always advise, the guy is good. At this point you should have a fair idea of what is/isn't for you..........
24. I didn't think he was truly awful, just not very interesting....but then, Maccas done that, on & off, for years..........
25. I'm with Blue - I don't do 'charity' gigs, favours for 'mates', auditions, competitions or any of said cr*p. No pay - no play Simple & long term, it works......
