  1. I used to run Chris Squire around in the back of my mini van - the front (& most of the back) was full of band gear - the average journey was under half an hour, and I had earache all the time.......... Oops, serves me right for speed reading - I thought it merely asked about 'bass players'............
  2. I have a couple of Dubsters (Barefaced), bought new a few years ago - used with class D Crown XLS and/or Ormats - it would take a lot to get me to go anywhere else............
  3. Littlewoods and, as far as I know, all of the electronics & furniture shed retailers finance through money brokers who assume the debt load, together with the interest. The retailer gets paid cost for the kit, plus a %, which covers their expenses/overheads. Thus the 'retailer' isn't that bothered over status.....
  4. While we're on the subject of extinct stuff - banana oil - used to be used on knitting machine needle beds - any ideas? vvvv thanks Dad - good start......
  5. This is where we run into the 'perceived value/worth' thing - I dread to think how much my kit is 'worth' - I'll just leave it to my executors to struggle with flogging it off (& no, I'm not joking)
  6. McArthur Park - Richard Harris Captain of Your Ship - Reperata & the Delrons I Fought the Law - She Trinity So much choice.........
  7. Nope - private sale = it is what it is (sorry, but you might as well know now) - I've been here, and it stinks.......
  8. Planes/cars unbend....people less so - I hope the ground crew are not badly injured - the band must be upset....
  9. I don't think Ashdown have problem - nowhere do they say 'does not contain additives' they list their valves and leave it at that (apart from the marketing guff). It (allegedly) has valves on the input (eventually?) and on the loud bit..... thus it is a 'valve' amplifier. Whether it's as much a valve amp as my Ormat is debatable.....(imo....exclusions apply)
  10. The older ones on here tend to think that a 'valve' amp is just that, with no fancy electikery & chips stuffed somewhere in the signal chain...good/bad ? That's a user decision - but it should be an informed decision, imo.
  11. Barring clauses in England always used to be 4 weeks plus distance radius (ten miles, if I remember right), but it's probably all changed by now - it never was a lot of use - it only works if the venues want it to. I think this possibly is now a 'restrictive trade practice' - argue & never work again?
  12. I notice that Mr Foxen is listing the amp as sold.... there is some love out there still
  13. You can pick up a new small Matamp for 359 - worth more than a passing glance............ VVVVV If you want something to gig at Glasto, these ain't gonna do it, but (imo) they make a great first step intro to valves.....
  14. Then there was the wedding where the best man was trying to goose the bride on the dancefloor...... She seemed ok with it, and new husband was ignoring it, propping up the bar..
  15. Some years back (84/5?) there was a version of 'Nellie the Elephant' I say no more....
  16. 'Come on Eileen' is usually best avoided as well.....seems to turn idiots into morons.........
  17. The silver looks very retro, but you can repaint the metal, which is more practical? (& you can change the colour if you get bored).....
  18. Room acoustics change as the evening goes on. People generate heat and humidity - this can affect not only the room, but the cones of loudspeakers. It's never a bad idea to have one member whose job is to adjust (gently) on the fly. As for the comment about the dj sound, laptops are a lazy and rubbish way of attempting the job. Modern compression is wonderful, but comes unseamed at anything like a decent function volume.
  19. ....you haven't lived until some drunk idiot dumps a pint of lager deliberately over your kit... 'well, it's a larf ennit' .......
  20. Anything with top vents is a bad idea for gigging............
  21. As a very happy Barefaced owner, I'd just chip in with 'they're not for everyone', but the thirty day real-world trial deal is a great way to find out if they suit your needs........
  22. I did functions for quite a while to pay the bills....hated most of them. (I could name some rubbish venues, but I won't). Pubs were easier and the money wasn't that bad....I notice the one round the corner has just applied to extend it's hours until 2.30am, which rather fu*ks pub gigs up for me, I don't want to get home at dawn.....
  23. I deliberately opted for Barefaced Dubsters (2x15) when they were a new(ish) model. They more than made up for my six Tannoy 15s, and I don't ever see me looking seriously at anything else (although the recently 'announced' Barefaced 18 sub might be fun)... .....stop it.....stop it now......
  24. 'musician' is a much abused term ....I stopped trying to tell peeps that I was a DJ ages back, these days, if pushed, I might admit to running a Sound System - that's usually obscure enough.
  25. Got a mail from GCHQ (Brighton) the other day, heralding the imminent arrival of an 18" sub bass from Alex & Company. Had I not been full of cold at the time, I would have saved the missive, but that's life. Anyone else been privy to this?
