These Carvins interest me as they resemble the shape of my old Vox Westminster cabinets. The vox cabs were extra heavy 1" particle board and rear-ported. The Carvins aren't even .75" plywood, but I want a couple. But,I know better now and will stick with 10's!
I put a set of Wizard 84's in my Thumb and they took away from the punchy mids so the MEC's went straight back in, but then different Warwick models vary a lot in their natural midrange so that might only be the case for the Thumb. GregBass, I'd recommend tweaking your EQ as a first port of call. The 3 basses you have are very different so it's normal that you should have to adjust your amp for each bass. If this doesn't do the trick you could try raising your pickups on the D and G side, just loosen the pickup screws a little under the D and G and see how it sounds. If you don't have any joy with that you could try a different gauge of strings, or maybe even a different brand. What gauge and brand of strings are you using at the moment?
Yes ,I agree. Getting the "G" string to sound like a bass is sometimes a job. Make sure the playing action is not too close because fret buzz reduces bass content.

The thumbwheels and switches are what makes a Jaguar special. The chrome is beautiful and it can send a flash signal of light to the audience. How about a Jaguar Bass III ? It would have 3 pickups and 2 thumbwheels for each pickup. [6 total]. The regular active/passive switch and a series switch to get a nice "triple bucker" sound. It might need 2 batteries.

I thought the pickups on John Entwistle's old 60's Thunderbirds were "soapbar" { like P-90 guitar pickups ] . He sure got some fierce bite= like a crocodile !! Whatever; Thunderbird pickups are scarce and pricey.

Yes, the first series of Jaguar Bass had a matching head in the bright red finish. I have one and had to improve the battery connection .The new Jaguars are better with a slightly rounder neck {still slim ]. The bridge pickup is a little closer to the bridge. They come in a darker 'candy apple red' with natural head ,cobalt blue [my favorite], and one other color. Many good tones!

Rickenbacker started using that "Made In USA" sticker around 2000-2005 {not sure but it is recent]. It is a good indicater of whether a 'Backer is new or used. People will peal it off and not be able to re-stick it intact. The newest 4003 Rickenbackers have a pull=pot switch to make it a little brighter sounding.

The chrome Thunderbird pickups were single-coil and twangey. They produce the WISHBONE ASH tone. The black Epi and Gibson pickups are 'buckers and more mellow. I have the active Epi and it needs more mids and treble to resemble the chrome Thunderbird pickups.
-
Does that sticker on the pickguard say "Made in USA" like the stickers on new Rickenbackers? Real Rickenbacker is the bass on early Bee Gees songs like "Massachuttes" and "Holliday".

Did Ashdown quit making the Mag 600 ? I have one and like it with two Avatar 2x10 cabinets. Is this new 12 band head the same price as the ABM 500? I wish they could handle 2ohm speaker loads.
-
The Ashdown is probably the best -sounding budget 8x10 cabinet, but it is not plywood like the ABM Ashdowns. The new Warwick 4x10 got a good review in Bass Player magazine and it is extra deep. You can get smaller cabinets up stairs alone.

Hi Red Dog! You know about aluminum basses. For years I played a heavy Travis Bean Wedge Bass. What is a good replacement bass with some metal parts? Is Tokai still making metal basses?
-
If you played with an amp and speaker , you could stay close to get added "live" sustain. Fatter bass EQ would add meat to your tone.

So you have to use a Thunderbird or you dont get the job
grenadilla replied to grimbeaver's topic in General Discussion
You could run a cord from the effects send or tuner out to a second head and 2x10 cabinet for extra brightness or crunch and keep the main tone a normal Thunderbird . A Eden pedal EQ ought to make it sound like an active bass. -
HELP MY CURSED SET UP!! WHAT CABS CAN MATCH SUNN 1200s!??
grenadilla replied to man_at_arms84's topic in Amps and Cabs
The Ampeg SVT cabinet seems to enjoy the low "E". I figure it's the cushion of air in a sealed cabinet. For a cabinet I can carry up stairs, I am trying 3 Avatar 2x10 cabinets. Stacked, it is taller than a SVT. Next, I want to try 3 Ashdown ABM cabinets. They look good. -
swapping speakers from 1x15 to 2x10 (ashdown)
grenadilla replied to clashcityrocker's topic in Amps and Cabs
If a wobbly cabinet is too deep or a strap handle in between causes the top cabinet to not be rigid, get some big rubber feet and mount them on either surface. A cabinet needs to stay still, just as your bass bridge needs to be screwed down tight! This is more important than having the treble sounds on top. -
QUOTE (oldslapper @ Oct 29 2010, 12:15 PM) Cool, didn't know he used Ashdown? Looks like it.
The Ashdown bass amp is for the other guys to use when Paul plays guitar or piano. Paul stays traditional with Mesa Boogie tube amps (in a rack ) and two 215 cabinets. One of these Mesa cabinets has a midrange driver.

My new Cobalt Blue Jaguar arrived today. The bridge pickup is closer to the bridge and it gets a more scooped sound than my older version Hot Rod Red. The neck seems a little bigger at the 7th fret.Leo Fender would be proud! My cat likes the shipping box!
I have the first version in Hot Rod Red , with matching headstock. With a pick , the neck pickup alone (passive) sounds like a Precision. I heard nasty popping sounds and discovered the battery connection was shakey. There was no clip-on attachment. What seemed easy was less secure. I added several layers of tape to the end of the battery to make it press harder against the contacts. So far OK. Now I am saving up for a Cobalt Blue. grenadilla birmingham, alabama
A speaker used as a microphone will work, sort of. It will pick up bass frequencies best in a boomy way. The output will be so great it can overload the input on the mixer. I think " Rain " was recorded at the same time as " Paperback Writer ". The highest notes are plenty bassey!
Was he having a joke? This was an April fool trick by the old Radio Luxembourg when they asked all their listeners to shout into their radio speakers and they'd record the signal at their end. If the speaker thing actually gives a signal worth amplifying I'm not sure it would be worth listening to when you think how much it differs from even a poor quality microphone. Of course I could be wrong but...

QUOTE (Happy Jack @ Oct 28 2010, 10:30 AM) A subject much discussed in the days when I used to frequent various Beatles forums and Hofner Hounds. If you put it in the context of other desirable instruments (as you did, above) then you come out with an answer in six figures ... somewhere between £100k and £900k. On principle, I'd guess about £250k. BUT That's not really the context, is it? Some may find this contentious (especially if they're under 40) but Macca's bass is, quite simply, the most valuable single instrument on the planet. Whoah there, boy! Going over the top a bit, aren't we? Nope. The Beatles are the biggest thing ever to happen in popular music, and yes, I do remember Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and the Bay City Rollers. If you're aged 45-65 then you grew up listening to The Beatles, to bands copying The Beatles, and to bands heavily influenced by The Beatles. They weren't a pop group, they were the environment. If you're aged under 45, then you grew up listening to your parents listening to The Beatles, and all your favourite bands have a massive debt to The Beatles. And all of that applies not just in Britain, or the States, but worldwide. There is NO other band or artist about whom that statement applies. Lennon and Harrison were filmed and recorded playing loads of different guitars. Their early-60's Rickenbackers are probably the most iconic, but it's not particularly clear cut and most people have little idea which guitars were played on which tracks. Macca is indelibly associated with just two basses, the Hofner and the Rickenbacker, both unique, both easily identified, both utterly iconic. If either of them were put up for auction by Macca, you'd be attracting people like Bill Gates, Roman Abramovich, Sheikh Makhtoub, the Sultan of Brunei. The auction would become a big swinging dick contest, and the bass would sell for well over £1m. Just to make a point. I'm richer than they are. It would end up in a bullet-proof glass case mounted on the wall of the main Reception at the Burg al'Arab in Dubai. Just another status symbol. Hey ... you asked me! ... and thank you, I thought you'd have something to say on this subject.
The Hofner Sir Macca plays now is often assumed to be his first, bought in Hamburg for less than a Fender cost. How about the Hofner with " Cavern " pickup spacing? Didn't Paul play it first? I read it was restored around the time of Revolution and then stolen.{?} I think his 'backer recorded better.

Which amp did Macca use for " With A Little Help From My Friends"? Sounds like his Rickenbacker.

My Marshall MB450H {made in Vietnam } sounds good and the two channels get different sounds. Only one speaker jack is working. I was able to connect four 8ohm cabinets because they have two jacks on the back.
Im guessing, never having played either the Epiphone or Gibson plugged in,that Epiphone passives have a brighter sound than gibsons ? Do the Epiphone Actives compare sound wise to anything else ?
MY active T=Bird Pro ( Epi } has a less pronounced midrange. With a pick and some muting at the bridge it can sound like a Hofner. Band mates who want you to play Fender will not like it.
