Lead Singers who play Bass!
Raymondo replied to Ted Theodore Logan, III's topic in General Discussion
Many great players and singers mentioned here and more yet to be mentioned I am sure . My personal favourite and inspiration ( I learned to play bass by copying his bass lines by ear)... Mr Burke Shelly of the band , Budgie Ladies and gentlemen. Vastly underrated band that influenced many rock bands that followed. I saw them many times ...they once toured with Judas Priest in support ....why Priest got the fame and Budgie didn't I will never know. Obviously all these things are subjective and if you don't like rock music you won't like this...….( not really showing off Mr shelly's bass playing but probably their most famous song).... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54H3EUAzpVg Mmmm you tube wont allow that video to be embedded so for those of you that can't be bothered to click on the link ….here's a different one ...more songs too!- 141 replies

Nazi rules to combat jazz... yes, really.
Raymondo replied to musicbassman's topic in General Discussion
Not wishing to cause an argument but I thought there was quite a bit of very good publicity. If you missed it, I highly recommend The Windemere Children (BBC2 ) and it's follow up ..The Windemere Children in their own words ( BBC4) . Both should be on I player. … reduced a pathetic old bass player to tears constantly! I visited Auschwitz18 months ago...a very moving experience. -
I wrote a book about being in a covers band
Raymondo replied to Dave Vader's topic in General Discussion
Ditto ! I have enjoyed all your books so far...I want my hard copy! -
Don't worry It's just my silly sense of humour..... John Hall, CEO of Rickenbacker Guitars is a notorious litigator and sues anyone or anything that relates to the "Fakers" This very forum has been threatened by his highly paid lawyers in the past .. I was merely combining the the possibility of you being an undercover agent with a threat from my alter ego..Dr Ray Mondeaux.

We used to travel from Nottingham to play there regularly in the early Nineties. I seem to remember the parking being a bit of a pain but we always managed to get somehere not too far away ( after unloading into the entrance as you say!). The stairs were the same as quite a few venues we played ( one above a large Co-op store in Mapperley Nottingham springs to mind) so didn't phase us. We were always well received and best of all....the kebabs from the nearby take away were fabulous! 😁

I've met some nice people through being a member here.....remember the old bass relay? ,that was fun. I have seen a few bands I wouldn't have normally known about and I have had many hours of fun in the off topic forum. Well said @Stub Mandrel this is a fabulous place.

Memorable gigs of the year played/attended
Raymondo replied to Uberkate's topic in General Discussion
I haven't gigged for over two years now 😥 Best attended is difficult because I love the Achievers gigs and they have all been fabulous ( Especially seeing them win the UK Blues challenge as young Teebs noted earlier) but I think Squeeze at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall last month just edges it as they were even more incredible than I thought they would be...just amazing musicianship playing incredible songs. The worst is actually a friends band so I won't mention their name but even though I love their cover songs and they are brilliant musicians ,they have suddenly lost the ability to control the sound. Their singer has a great voice but the guitars ( he plays one of them so he is just as guilty) drown everything out at such an incredible volume that I have had to walk out for fear of going completely deaf! -
Nice that the kids still see our chosen instrument as cool

And that, ladles and jellyspoons, Is what makes the world go around. No such thing as good or bad music; You either like it or you don't ,there is no right or wrong choice. 🙂 -

Last band I played in , we always started with Fleetwood Mac's "Don't stop" a nice and easy dancy number that has a very satisfying stop that always made me feel .".yeah we're on it" when we nailed it.

Ok ...Deep breath .. !st band ...1973 I had only played along to records in my bedroom and had little confidence. I met my (soon to be ) band mates at College ...we were all apprentice plumbers on "day release". I went for a jam with the singer /guitarist and the second guitarist whose garage we used. we got on well and needed a drummer. I nominated my friend who had driven me to the jam even though he had never expressed an interest in drums and had never even picked up a drum stick ...six weeks later we played our first gig! we did the club circuit for a couple of years. 2nd band....10 years later, having married and had kids so hadn't been in a band for that long ...The "second guitarist" knocked on my door and asked me to play bass in his originals rock band...I boro=rowed gear and played the local rock circuit for a year or so but left because I could commit to touring...The band was ( still is) called SYZ and they had one single released that has become a bit of a collectors item on the NWOBHM scene..they have a small mention in a book about the scene..typically, I missed out on all the fame.glory, free sex and money 😉 3rd band...five years later, my marriage ended and I bought a bass...answered an ad in the local paper and joined a band...we played the local pub and club scene for four years ….I fell in love with, and married the guitarist's daughter( much younger than me!) and had a great time ..the band split because me and my new wife went to live in Tenerife for the first time. we moved back to the Uk and I joined a band after auditioning ...even though one band member was someone I had had sacked from the band(3rd in this saga) before I eventually left forTenerife. we lasted a year ..he was still a d*ck ..so I left ...taking the singer, the guitarist, the drummer and the Keyboardist with me! 🙂 I'm bored now ...I'm sure you lot were before we got this far …..so I'll just say that after my second marriage ended after ten years ...I went to Tenerife and had a blast earing a living playing my bass.

It was Dave Cousins, Chas Cronk and Dave Lambert. Playing acoustically and chatting about the bands history. It was fabulous. I was in awe of Chas Cronks' dexterity, playing twelve string and/or bass, whilst playing foot controlled bass and strings. Singing too ! A very intimate gig, They were happy to chat afterwards with us mere mortals.

I am off to York tonight to see The Strawbs. I only know "Part of the Union" ,from the seventies and I think I had the album that was out when it was a hit. Since then I have not listened to anything of theirs. When My friend told me about the gig I thought about listening to some of their output over the years but I decided to go with "open ears" and listen to them as if they were a new band. I am assuming that after 50 years in the business they may well be able to bash out a tune or two!😀

Did Mr Van Day encase it in a roll? ( cob where I'm from but that opens up too many cans of worms!)
