1. I just got home with the other 1153..... Also no problems ...nice guy to deal with. Regards Ray
2. +1 on the I can't understand a word he says......I gave up half way through the Keith interview Love their music though.
3.
Be selective about which one you buy (there are some terrible examples out there), but you could find a stunning bass, I did... Here's my 1978 BG 4001. The thinnest neck and 8.1 pounds with perfect balance. Astonishing Rickenbacker but took me 20 years of playing quite a few heavy, lifeless duds with thick necks to find it
Thanks for posting that......I now know what my Arbiter, purchased new in 1975 and sold in 1977) was a copy of
4. Its a pity you are a bass player because I would love to join a band with someone who has your attitude.... good luck mate (though I sense you won't need it)
5. Thanks Nige I will call him tomorrow.... Ray
6. I guessed you meant the Saturday .. yes we are playing then ...at the old dyers in spon end ...a great bikers pub if anyone wants some of the usual classic rock stuff.....oh and a female singer that wears more clothes than a certain Mr Venom Let me know when you play Nottingham or Derby and i will try to come alo ng ...I loved the video you had on here recently.
7. ooops meant to PM that ...oh well ...now everybody knows
8. Hi Nige I would love the chance to try and replace you in heartbreaker! what age range are they looking for? what day do they rehearse? I am 55 ( but constantly get told I don't look as old as that ) I live in Nottingham but know Robannas well as my current band rehearse there when needed....we don't do many gigs so running the two bands together wouldn't be a problem for me...would they mind? I have the gear .... but guess I may have to try to learn a five string for feel like making love????....transport and all my own teeth. My mobile 07770252754 Cheers Ray
9. Bugger we are gigging that night ....in COVENTRY! no point in posting our gig now that you lot are nearbye Seriously,I hope you have a great night,When are you in Nottingham again?
10. When I play in my own band I go for the 95% thing ......All right now has to be the same as the record when I dep (not very often) I learn their set list note for note but adjust if the rest of the band add their own thing! When I played in a stereophonics tribute band I annoyed the singer by refusing to play like the original ...I'm sorry but even some one with as little talent as me gets bored stiff playing all those root notes!!!!! BTY I heard the phonics bassist saying in an interview that when he played what he thought was a cool and interesting bassline when they were recording one song Kelly Jones gave him a bollocking and made him play simple root notes.
11.
I guess its also about the environment. Lanzarote is probably going to attract a certain type of customer base that may be generally less discerning where live music is concerned. My biker brother and his mates, for instance, would hate a BT band and would probably throw things but, as they would never go on holiday to Lanzarote, the risk of injury to Ricky Coo Coo and Germaine is small!!
We play a bikers headquarters pub in Coventry regularly and they all love the live band rock stuff.. but when we played their festival earlier this year they had a guy playing guitar and singing to backing tracks,on in the bar for the afternoon and (1) he was fabulous and (2) everybody loved it! No body is right or wrong here ....it's just providing a service for the general(and in the bikers case not so general) public.
12.
Thing is - if you get into/form a decent band that plays music people want to hear you will always get gigs. I think this has always been the case. If you are in it for the money this is even more appropriate. When i hear of bands that are finding trouble getting gigs its normally because they don't recognise what they are doing wrong - its easier to blame landlords, duos or the price of cheese than actually take a look at what they are doing. I'll leave you with this from Wiki... "A duo still performs under the name of Black Lace, but neither current band member was in the group when it was formed or when it enjoyed its biggest chart success" Now thats depressing. colin gibb (forget his real name!....ex Black lace ,replaced me in the band when I left Tenerife...he also does a BLACK LAce act with BTs
13. How lovely to hear that the world is not full of cynical bu@@ers at all.... restores your faith in human nature.
14.
OK, I'll be the one to ask the obvious question. What's a ghost note?
when I played in an "originals" band we recorded a demo and after I had finished my part the guy recording us asked me if I meant to play "all those ghost notes?"....I had no idea what he meant so I said "yes"....everything was left as was and that was that...... I still have no idea what they are (even after reading this thread ).....I don't (read CAN'T) play slap and play fingerstyle rock type stuff..... some times ignorance really is bliss
15. I have experienced both sides of this...I lived in Tenerife for a few years (in the quieter part...Los Gigantes) and made a living playing my bass for the only time ever in my life ...But only because I played in three acts that used backing tracks. The Five piece band we had could only get one or two gigs a month at best and we only ever got 50 euros each maximum. We all much prefered the full band but had to pay the rent ,so we split into different trios and duos and gigged all over the place . Some of the best nights of fun and awesomeness occured when playing to tracks...,, A gorgeouse little girl of no more than three years of age came up to me after one song ,opened her little purse, and gave me a ten cent coin as a thank you for the music...I still have it! A ten year old girl sat at the back of one gig drawing all night ...then at the end she came up to us and she had drawn the duo! many people on holiday joined in with us ...at band gigs and BT gigs ...one of the best....A Norwegian guy that played fabulous guitar and harmonica ....his band was supporting Kris kristofferson when he went back home....that was a BT gig as a trio. All in all it taught me to more tolerant of BTs and kareoke etc because (1) people make a living and (2) the audience have a ball! The venues could not afford to put live (full band) acts on every night ...all inclusive holidays have killed many a resort....but people want some entertainment so the BT acts get the work , I wish it were not so but that's the way of life in holiday land (well in Tenerife anyway!!!) P.S We got a gig as the full five piece band at one of the all inclusive hotels ...every Thursday night 60 euros each ...nice stage etc etc .....after two weeks we were cancelled .....the night was too busy and the bar staff complained it was too much work....true story!
16. I read an interview with Mr Pegg in one of the bass mags a few years ago and I loved the guy for the sponsership he had secured ...not for him a fancy bass guitar manufacturer, nor a nice amp builder, not even a string maker...no ....he was sponsored by......Wadsworth six x.....Brilliant!....as much beer as you can drink, what a way to save money!
17. Just followed Siddxs' link here from another thread....I am guilty as charged,I hardly ever come to this part of the forum(I don't laugh at beginers either though .....a reference to the thread I was reading NOT you guys!!!)...I LOVED this yes the mix is a little hard to get through but wow what a great song and +1 for the fabulous singing. Good luck guys.
18.
First gig was Humble Pie (about 1971) with Steve Marriott, Greg Ridley on bass, Jerry Shirley (drums) and I think Clem Clemson on guitar. I remember my ears "whistling" for a couple of days afterwards!
I saw Humble Pie at one of the Reading festivals.......before they came on their roadies came out and put a big sheet down on the stage....we wondered what the heck that was about.....Stevie Marriott proceeded to gob all over the floor in between every song!!!!!! AND Greg Ridley (great bass player)played most of the set with blood pouring from the fingers of his right hand.
19. and now i'm in a Budgie tribute band...... you and I must have simular tastes then Burke apparently is an odd one, I havn't met him, but i have met Tony Bourge, Ray Philips, Pete Boot, and Simon Lees, all nice guys. Let me know when you are gigging I will do my damndest to be there!!!
20.
Yes I saw Gillan too at Essex Uni and Budgie at the Winning Post, Witton. I remember Budgie as one if the best live bands I've seen. But I've seen Burke Shelley interviewed on TV in recent years and sadly thought he came across as a bit of a....berk.
I still love Budgie,my fav band, They were the SECOND band I saw, accidentally,I had gone to see stan webs' Chicken shack but their van had broken down(Yeah right! ) and we were given free tickets for the next week. Budgie blew me away!!!! I went out the next day and bought an albumn and proceeded to purchase every one in the 70's and 80's. I learned to play bass by copying Burke Shelly....I met him and he was ok...ish ....but I have met others who say he is a bit too...erm..."self important". He still is a hero for me though! Sorry for the meandering I will let you all get on with remembering your first gigs now.
21. First gig for me was Family at the de Montefort Hall leicester.....even though I was living in Nottingham....My friends elder sisters' boyfriend took us ...I have no idea why (well maybe it was something to do with us miming to Black Sabbath records every night whilst supposedly playing bass and drums, and perhaps he wanted to broaden our musical horizon)........Linda lewis supported ....I think John wetton was on bass but not sure ....it was 1972/3 ish their farewell tour I believe.
22. After 4 months I would say you are very much "getting there"....well done
