1.
I think punters like good sound quality, however I don't think they know what it is or how it's achieved. I would say , don't scale back because you heard a pub band on a good night. Any system your using that will give you more control and the ability to manipulate and adapt your sound to different rooms is best. Blue
I agree with that last weekend we played a new place, and we padded out the audience with fellow muso's to please the Landlord, a couple of the band were having an off night and there were some howlers fired off, including a lead break 2 bars out of sync...for the whole solo! At the end of the night we got pats on the back from punter and fellow muso alike.....people hear what they want to hear, and provided you are close...you're golden!
2. Walked into Guitar Guitar in Brum last week, fully intending to walk out with a Fender jaguar bass, spent 2 minutes with it, then another 25 trying out different Ibenez basses, with sounded SO much better, and were half the price. In the end head beat heart and I came out empty handed...mind you... http://www.guitargui...160209293870008 looks SO much nicer in the flesh....errrr...wood, too! The whole time I was there I played nothing more than a couple of chromatic runs...over and over...and over, I want to hear how a bass sounds, with all the different tonal possibilities, not show off my (non existent) chops!!
3. mmmmm interesting....I feel some more dosh coming your way Tim!
4.
You could do the Eb songs on a four string in drop D. I used to do that for Sweet Child Of Mine and Basket Case as I realised the only note I was missing in standard tuning was the low Eb. It takes a bit of mental re-jigging to do that, but probably easier to do it for just those songs than for the entire set on a flat five string.
Yup, hipshot on the E string for me too, instant swap and ready for 'Sweet Child' or 'Fool for your Lovin'...Ofc I actually learnt the songs that way rather than on my 5iver.
5. I stencilled the Planet Rock logo onto my old Laney 4x10 a few years back, looks great, but the cab sounded ropy so I never see it now! 6.
Ah come on, you know how it is - they'll notice us when we stop playing
haha...that's what I do when our singer introduces the band, just stop playing and hear the emptiness!!! Back OT, none of my basses (4) are particularly high end, of the three 4 strings I'll just gig whichever one is in favour at that time. The 5 string Yam comes out when things are looking tricky!
7. I'm on my 3rd listen now...basschat trawls take a while lol!
8. I found that very relaxing whilst browsing through basschat, well done that man!!
9. Mrs Oops commented on that as well, just before she dozed off grumbling 'listening to this is hard work' !
10. I thought it was a brave concept, maybe it was just the standard BBC sound engineer mangling that ruined it? Those in the audience seemed to enjoy it, so maybe it was just us in TV land that got the bums rush? 'Blackstar' came across quite well I thought. Sent the tingles up my spine with the opening lyric!
11.
I had a Yamaha TRBX505 and although i dont remember the weigh tit was light compared to my Squier CV 4 strings. Nut width is 43mm as well. http://usa.yamaha.co...505/?mode=model
that's mine now Dave I just weighed it, 7.93lbs..how about THAT then?
12. Thats our Tim, I'm sure he could sort you out Bud.
13. here's another tip, give us a clue as to where you are located, there are many friendly basschatters who may be up for a meet so you can try their stuff and get a feel for what you want
14. Roqsolid covers put my two off wrecking my Eden 4x10, its the wrong texture for scratching, they just ignore it.
15. Hey hey! Settle down, get comfy, and be prepared for everything!
16.
the inevitable hat tantrums.
I quite literally ROFL'ed at that!!!!
17.
The gigs were great, but the meeting and socialising was an absolute nightmare for me. but in the intervals and before gigs I just like to go and sit with a coffee and read a book or something. I have to be absolutely organised. I need set lists in advance. I put everything out the night before, and leave to the gig with plenty of time to spare.
Sorry to paraphrase you Ambient, but these parts describe me too, I thought it was just me, maybe its a bassist thing, we like to be organised, but don't 'get' the socialising thing. If I didn't play in bands, I'd never go in a pub at all, and I hate being nagged to 'go out and get gigs' cos I really struggle being in pubs in that situation. To the OP, as others have said, get more in the loop with the mum so you know what to expect, the actual band ethos sounds like fun, and challenging, which can be a good thing. Good luck with whatever you choose fella.
18. I tend to adjust my tone 'on the fly' dependant on song requirements using the bass tone knob. Adjustments at the amp are done at setup for a gig to get the sound for the room. Whatever the caps are that KiOgon uses on his looms, they are fine by me, installed one of his looms in my P at the weekend and it sings to me now!!
19.
OK...after a lot of trial and error, I've identified the source of my noise problem.... I use my Smooth Hound on a board with just my Zoom B3 - both with their own PSU's. If I use a patch lead to connect them (or a hard connector) I get massive noise, unless I use the active setting and whack on the noise reduction. If I use a long (20ft) lead to join the Smooth Hound to the Zoom, the signal is clear with no noise on any setting! I've tried it with the shortest lead I have - about 6ft - and I get a little noise. It seems the shorter the lead, the louder the noise. All my connectors are decent quality, so it's not them that are responsible for the noise. Am I doing something daft or do I have to use a 20ft cable as a patch lead to get a clean signal?
Probably explains why I had no issue then, using a normal 3m guitar lead between my B3 and the amp mounted Smoothhound.
20.
Or 'hamstermangler'?
Molestrangler? a dame as I recall!!
21.
Yep, if you search youtube for "Bass player falls off stage" I am the one with green strings. To be honest it is very funny.
Masterfully done sir!
22. Got a replacement loom for my MiM P as the pots have gone crackly, overnight service and a free screwdriver for fitting the pickup wires thrown in, All round top guy, use this man he is the biz!!
23. I love tales like this...well done chap!
24. I use rechargeables in my smoothound, 2 AAA's in the tx, and 2 charging on my powerstrip..ALWAYS ready to rock!!
