1.
Playing over the bridge pickup typically gives a short more abrupt sound as the string does not have as much chance to move and vibrate. That is why the neck pickup is BIG as it has more chance to move...
I'd suggest the string has a higher resonancy peak due to the flexibility of the string. It still vibrates at the same frequency to produce the same pitch. You can hear how the resonancy peak changes by running a pick down the windings of roundwound strings when they're fitted.
This is why big bassey cabs tend to be toneless...and is the same reason that big powerful pickups can be the same. The bass output overwhelms all other characteristics
It's hair splitting but even a sub woofer has a tone. But yes, a load of 100Hz can turn everything else to mud. Much better to dial back the 100Hz and maybe aim for 25 or 35Hz. Stuff you can feel more than hear. Then knock the 250-400Hz band up a little depending on what sounds best.
Single coil are thinner typically and you hear the bass' inherrent sound..for good or bad.
Do you mean mids? Mids are everything IMO. Without being able to hear them cleanly it can be difficult to hear pitch on stage. But back to the OP. It depends on whether you want something that evokes the sound of a jazz pickup or replicates the sound of a jazz pickup. The problem is that there are trade offs, the more you move towards a jazz coil sound, the further you move from a Stingray sound. I'd agree with previous posts that pickup position counts for a fair bit. But the MM pickup also has BIG magnets and lots of windings. It's designed for fatness (with help from the stock preamp) which is why they aren't so hi-fi (not that this matters much). I can get approximations of both with soapbars on my Spector mainly due to position and coil selection. But for live purposes only, they'd never pass mustard in a recording situation.
2.
But 2,247,395 of those are from bass_ferret's aliases.
Really? Anything else we need to know?
3. Maybe, I really don't understand their logic. They were doing so well and now they appear to be undermining their own brand.
4. Its a great amp - clean sounding, lots of flexibility, LOUD and the wedge shape is IDEAL for small stages.
5. http://www.whatsthatdudeplay.com/2011/01/akai-pedals-biyang-rebrands/ If (and I say IF) this is true, oh how the mighty have fallen.
6. Maybe he's just inventing a different name for something a lot of US players call The Pocket. Basically the time period around a single beat where you can play a note in front or behind the beat without it sounding out of place.
7. All those gospel players are slick and really know their theory and particularly their inversions. Sharay does some incredible fills over some tricky chords sometimes. I was looking at an instructional vid yesterday on youtube showing how to do one of his fills. The presenter introduces the fill by mentioning its done over a 6 over 9 chord and later on finishes it by hoping the viewer finds lots of ways to use it. Honestly though...how often do 6 over 9 chords ever pop up in gospel? Cool vid about inversions and gospel bass here. Shows how to invert simple chords and arpeggiate up the neck as a run. Way more useful than 6 over 9 chords. My god...I'm at serious risk of practicing.
8.
You've found another Sharay Reed, Kiwi.
Funny you should say that... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBGvl0FkjrI I posted this on the FB page but...recognise the location?
9. I have four 3 band parametric circuits, I'd suggest they're very neutral sounding.
10. Joel Grant. Does anyone on here know him? Nice sounding Warwick too.
11. How sure are you that a preamp change will do what you are expecting? You can certainly increase the output (Klaus might even modify the preamp for you if you send it to him). John's preamps are very clean also (and a little sweeter in the high end). How much of what you hear is the character of the instrument rather than the preamp?
12. Have tried to avoid Fenders for the last 20 years. May succumb to a late 70's jazz though to match the stingray. Otherwise my natural finished Spector is the go to bass.
13. Love it. He's got a great voice! Pulling off a great original song and making it your own with the same level of intensity and confidence is about the clearest definition of talent I can imagine. Keep finding more.
14. Apart from the Fender V are there any other instruments they haven't re-released? The Fender Elite series...?
15. Hey Daddy-o, the basic forum would be very similar to Basschat but perhaps without a few side features for the time being. There would also be an opportunity for enthusiastic members with the right qualities to take a key role in influencing how the forum develops, as well. The culture you referred to is something we've worked hard to develop over the years. We can train those members and equip them with the skills that are needed and also learn from our mistakes. We didn't have a specific plan for when to roll out the other forums but if a core of people are enthusiastic and positive about it, I don't think we could ask for a better start. The forum would ultimately need to be self funding. So software licenses, hosting costs and technical support would need covering by us in the shorter term but we'll think about ways to make it work through Basschat.

17.
Again, no. Drummerworld already fills this 'niche'. We need a real forum. Just like Basschat, only better. (Please.)
It would be great if Drumchat was better than Basschat! I'll separate this into another thread out of respect to Sarah and how about we compare notes? I'll come at it from the planning side. What things/qualities/aspects of Basschat do you think should be in Drumchat?
18.
Yay..! I have a ton of lovely topics to start the ball rolling (Birch v Maple, which sticks are best for metal, how to maintain 260 bpm with my double pedal, Zildjian v Paiste, favourite stick twirl...). Just a teaser, there's loads more. Come on Mods, let's get this show on the road..!
Funnily enough I was thinking about this the other day. If you guys would be prepared to form a core of friendly and welcoming people, a group who could set up a positive vibe and make the forum friendly for other members to use. we could definitely look into putting a basic forum together for you. Although it would depend on how much time Ben has.
19.
Ive always thought the names summed up the cultural differences very well.......... TALKbass - Ok guys lets talk some serious bass. BassCHAT - Lets have a nice little chat about basses shall we if that ok with you? And I agree with Skankdelvar. Definatly a sign of those who have little to give themselves. A
I'd like to use that as a quote at some point in some promotional material, if thats ok with you?
20. 2,300,000 hits a month speaks for itself, I think.
21. Value isn't associated with age really, its more about nostalgia and associations with popular music. Wait 15 years and solid black Warwick Thumbs and Spectors from the late 90's and early noughties soar in value as today's Gen Z rockers and metallers can finally afford the instruments that defined their coming of age.
22. Bikinis?! You are in a different place to the one I know. There was so much crude oil floating in the water no one would go swimming in their right minds. Mind you, that didn't stop some... ...when I was 10 we used to do the complete circuit on a Sunday afternoon. Walk past St Mary's into the woods, follow the woods around to the Nav college playing fields, across Newtown Road, down the public right of way past the Nav college to the beach and then walk along the beach back to the Rising Sun and then up Shore Road to the village. Some huge 60's houses around Hook and on Newtown Road...aah nostalgia.
23.
Small world! I still like getting down to the Rising Sun on a Sunday after a brisk walk...
Do you wear yellow wellies too?
24. I recall someone else on the forum having a similar issue some time back. I can't remember who it was though but it must have been about 2007 or 08 I think. Have you considered changing the preamp valve? They're cheap to buy and its literally a pull out, plug in job once the amp cover comes off.
25. Welcome - I grew up in Warsash.
