1. sh*t man, that sucks. I wish people didn't have to sell gear just to keep the wolf from the door. I've been there myself.
2.
Really Kiwi, I wish you'd shown me where I could buy one for that price. I fear your love Uncle Ken could be colouring your normally excellent judgement . I fully appreciate you've bought / sold / owned many more Smiths than I, but having played "Hunt the Smith" recently I couldn't find one ( except with a very badly damaged neck which had been repaired ) for less than £2k, and god knows I looked long and hard for some time all over Europe and the US of A too. I stand by what I said, I think £2k is a VERY good price at the moment and if I needed another or could justify it to my significant other I'd be all over it.
I sold all three of mine at different times in about 6-8 weeks from the time they were made available. Two were sold through the Bass Gallery and one was sold to a friend. It wasn't as if my arm was being taken off in any instance, and Alex thought my expectations weren't too low. Maybe the demand for them has gone up in the last couple of years?
3. I wouldn't consider buying a BSR5EG for more than 2k. I think 1.8-2k is fine.
4. In terms of my own performance - OBBM saw it. I did a depping gig with a blues band called Soul Kitchen and had 2 weeks to learn 23 blues songs. Piece of piss you might say but they weren't straight forward old times blues songs, they included tricky Robben Ford numbers...blues without the I-IV-V-I progressions which totally stressed me out. I managed to get through it but the money covered fuel expenses and nothing else. Managed to put off a group of three guys breaking into my car while it was being loaded up too. I swore never to dep again unless I knew at least half the set list. Had other gigs where the punters weren't much fun for one reason or another but nothing that lost me sleep.
5. +1 Pino Palladino, I'd love to know where he got the ideas for those Paul Young songs.
6. Hi Kevin, your dad was fairly active on here if I recall too. Welcome aboard, have you gone back to bass then?
7. the first complete bass line I ever learned was New Years Day by U2. There was a guitarist at school who was really into The Edge and wanted a jam buddy, I was just stoked I sounded like the record!
8. thought I'd agreed first option on it.
9. To the OP: I believe so, the wood relaxes under years of string tension and playing. The treatment of wood referred to earlier is known as acrylisation, acrylic resin is injected into wood under pressure. Probably makes the wood denser, more consistent in tonal response and lowers the resonancy peak of the wood (less risk of deadspots). Not sure about factors relating to wood drying out, wood absorbs and emits moisture all the time, depending on the surrounding humidity. Not sure about Fender opting for lighter or heavier bodies either, as far as I've been able to tell they didn't care about the wood density, the place was a production line.
10. Lexicon MPXG2 - literally a swiss army knife. I've been able to reconfigure it for pretty much every situation regardless of whether bass or guitar, studio or live, stereo or mono. In fact I bought a second very recently because the market rate for them is so low. Absolutely outstanding piece of kit. I've even been able to use it to integrate my MIDI rig into the main bass rig using the switchable insert loop.
11. The amp I use for the hifi is an old 80's Mission Cyrus One. Not sure if it really was Class D to be honest, I'm far from being a hi-fi snob but the Cyrus seemed good value for fifty quid at Peterborough cash convertors. The preamp was a Rotel AV unit, I still have it somewhere. I like the Mission stuff and wouldn't mind getting a set of Mission bookshelf speakers some day. I have a separate Marantz home theatre system though.
12. whoop! hello baby! I had the power switch replaced with a Boogie item but they didn't supply the original shape. Damn I'm tempted but I wouldn't know what to do with it since going Class D on both bass rigs and hifi.
13. An Akai Deep Impact without the PCB issues would be nice. The Mark Bass unit is nearly there but lacks the variety of envelope sounds. The Octavius Squeezer is good but the two knob user interface is tricky to navigate. A Genz Benz Shuttle that fits a half rack space, has twin inputs, stereo effects and can put out to two 4 ohm cabs would be nice too. Come to think of it, I might as well just buy another Shuttle 6 and have both mounted in a 2u rack chassis instead.
14. Loved mine when I had it. Pretty much designed as a hifi amp when first released and I used mine for while just for that.
15. Marty Pellow always seemed to look smug. Kudos to Mr Clarke though, some tip top poptastic plonking. I wonder what he's doing these days?

Yamahas
I would disagree that the Nathan east was over priced, It's probably the highest quality bass I have ever played including Roscoes, Dingwall, Sadowsky, Alleva etc etc. If you could get one for £1400 and sneak it into the UK you wouldn't find anything in the same league.
*ahem* Spectors.

Yamahas

I think Yammies are under rated, they've never really promoted themselves as a high status brand. Apart from the BBNEII which was hideously over priced outside Japan (1400 quid in Japan, 2300 quid in the UK and US), all the signature models I can think of have been promoted as very affordable work horses. Good on them!
18. when I first read the topic title this came to mind with the daft handshakes and trouser leg action. Its one of my fave python sketches btw, I've encountered too many frustrated architects like the Cleese character.
