Or...the combination of woods is such that they cancel each others differences out....or...that the listener didn't notice the differences. There's a simple test for those who say wood doesn't make a difference. Play a Status and testify that graphite doesn't make a difference. IF graphite makes a difference (because its [url="http://www.janartsguitars.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6&Itemid=6"]denser[/url]), then why shouldn't different densities in woods? The difference is there, I'd suggest its not as distinct for some. A bit like giving someone brought up on chinese takeaways a plate of beef carpaccio and asking them whether they thought it tasted better.

Shame the video didn't actually show us what it sounded like. I was disappointed by that.

Love the drumming, how Chris Coleman manages to keep steady time with so much space, so many polyrhythms AND tying into what Hadrien is playing is utterly breath taking.

[/quote] Dude, he played a Jaydee on that album - even though the cover shows a Status. I have an Alembic and one of the original Steinberger XL5A's. They sound very different, I love the feel of the Alembic but the Steinberger sounds warmer. In fact I'd almost go as far to say that Steinberger have come as close to the ideal graphite neck as I've found. All of the advantages and not so much of the brittleness. Ped's vigier is a fantastic sounding bass though and has more in common with Status than Steinberger in terms of neck construction. I had three Modulus basses two of which were disappointing in one way or another and one just didn't fit with what I was looking for despite being a keeper in every other respect.

I'm one too. Only because I was taught this way. Mark King is as well, apparently.

Not really. I'm still using the sound of my old Jaydee as the reference for other basses, only its a bit warmer and fuller these days.

I can't imagine how to get radiussed inside corners with a chisel. I'm planning something similar and will go down the router route.

80's Steinbergers, 80's Yamaha BB5000, Musicman Stingray 5, G&L L1500 and some of the latest Status basses are offered with narrow spacing as a custom option. Generally a lot of the mid 80's 5 string basses had narrow string spacing and then the spacing tended to widen out after the 90's. I don't think the Spectors I own are particularly narrow by comparison. The Yammie BB5000 is amongst the narrowest IIRC.
