Live At the Aladdin is a great dvd - he loosens up with the band nicely. The Year2K one is my fave though. There are loads of Prince bootlegs from all points in his career. But I'm not about to divulge my sources publically. Some of them are crap anyway. But the soundcheck recordings are pretty good - anything where he has to interact with people.

All graphite necks should be manufactured with truss rods unless the manufacturing is perfect and the necks come with a life time guarantee against warping. Graphite necks warp - I know because I've owned 3 early 80s Cutlass basses and a 95 Modulus Quantum all with necks like bananas. Steinberger necks are designed differently to Status/modulus necks being solid resin based rather than hollow laminated monocoque. Later necks did feature truss rods. I've got 10 of 'em sitting at home here with truss rods in. The one for sale is salvagable but it will require a complete defretting and the fingerboard will require reprofiling, refretting and dressing.

A straight neck, lighter gauge strings and lower action all help. Sounds like the neck in your Ibanez is still fighting the string tension. How new is it? You might have to give it some serious gigging over a couple of years for the instrument to settle down.

thats my fave colour combo for a bass - blueburst quilted maple and a maple board.

I buy the cheapest strings I can find, in the expectation they're all crap so I might as well reduce the amount I spend as much as I can. Having said that, I've picked up some Harke sets that have been good and otherwise I'll fall back on Warwick yellow label or whatever I can pick up on Ebay at dirt cheap prices. I think I've had some Olympia titanium alloy strings on a few instruments for well over a year and they still sound fresh.

What JTUK said is more or less true in my experience apart from the preamps. You should firstly decide what sound you want and then search out an instrument that delivers. There are some manufacturers like Lakland who have managed to achieve an incredible level of consistency in their instruments but you won't get much in the way of customisation. If you go to a custom luthier you're more or less at the mercy of their wood pile. Finding a custom luthier who has nailed their wood selection is like finding a needle in a haystack. To have the best of both worlds, find an instrument that gives you the sound and then have it customised. You won't be able to get much back for it in terms of resale value but if its one in a million then its unlikely you will ever need to sell it. This does assume that you will have tried loads of basses before settling on what you're looking for. Whether it has a maple fingerboard or walnut body doesn't really matter at the end of the day. Basses are like a recipe, in that they represent a mix of ingredients. One ingredient can be added or altered in such a way to compensate for the inadequacies of another. Whether you like the flavour is another matter entirely. I've tried loads of basses over the years. The ones that stood out for me were made almost exclusively from maple, but a particular combo of hard and soft maple. So I have a couple of Spectors now but they've been heavily customised to make them sound warmer than standard Spectors.. I also really like graphite necks but haven't found a bass yet which combines low action with warm sound. I'm still working on that one.
