1. Yes, but they're usually drunk and being egged on by their drunk mates. Honestly...don't they know anything? Thats no way to start a deep and meaningful relationship based on trust and respect.
2. http://www.theguitarsherpa.com/categories/...cteristics.html Just found this link library on tonewoods. I'll pin this topic too, given it pops up regularly enough.
3. Live At the Aladdin is a great dvd - he loosens up with the band nicely. The Year2K one is my fave though. There are loads of Prince bootlegs from all points in his career. But I'm not about to divulge my sources publically. Some of them are crap anyway. But the soundcheck recordings are pretty good - anything where he has to interact with people.
4.
No probs mate
cheers!
5. I saw him twice at the O2 and the concerts were OK but the aftershow parties were truly life changing. Astounding band. Thats all I'll say.
6. Would someone mind bagging me a copy please?
7. thanks for doing this Linus, you've inspired me to think about who I could tap up now...
8. thanks for doing this Linus, you've got me thinking about who I could tap up now...
9. I don't really care much for vintage, but if the instrument has a story behind it then its interesting.
10. Stick by your guns and wait for word of mouth to get around.
11.

I noticed an awkward looking John Peel on a mis-mimed mandolin solo. How on earth did they manage to persuade him to do that? Re: bass used, I wondered if it might have been a two pickup Gibson of some kind played on the bridge pickup. Didn't sound warm or crisp enough for a Fender.
12. All graphite necks should be manufactured with truss rods unless the manufacturing is perfect and the necks come with a life time guarantee against warping. Graphite necks warp - I know because I've owned 3 early 80s Cutlass basses and a 95 Modulus Quantum all with necks like bananas. Steinberger necks are designed differently to Status/modulus necks being solid resin based rather than hollow laminated monocoque. Later necks did feature truss rods. I've got 10 of 'em sitting at home here with truss rods in. The one for sale is salvagable but it will require a complete defretting and the fingerboard will require reprofiling, refretting and dressing.
13. A straight neck, lighter gauge strings and lower action all help. Sounds like the neck in your Ibanez is still fighting the string tension. How new is it? You might have to give it some serious gigging over a couple of years for the instrument to settle down.
14. How does the NYC compare to your Celinders?
15. Nice score, I did wonder how well birdseye maple might fit in a punk band
16. thats my fave colour combo for a bass - blueburst quilted maple and a maple board.
17. I buy the cheapest strings I can find, in the expectation they're all crap so I might as well reduce the amount I spend as much as I can. Having said that, I've picked up some Harke sets that have been good and otherwise I'll fall back on Warwick yellow label or whatever I can pick up on Ebay at dirt cheap prices. I think I've had some Olympia titanium alloy strings on a few instruments for well over a year and they still sound fresh.
18.
CK, if memory serves me correctly you had a Groove 5 at one time..?
I did, stunning value for money in terms of build quality. I loved it apart from the heavily offset body shape which looked great but didn't offer me the support I was used to.
19.
Once the farkin' couriers sort their lives out, I'll be able to join your gang - I've bought Dave Perry's rather tasty fretless S2000 5er. The anticipation is killing me...
Glad its staying in the family, if I didn't have to trump up some serious shipping costs plus import duty you would have had to fight me for it.
20.
I am more than happy to wear a BC T-shirt (provided it's in none-so-black) to the next Finnbass Ffumble.
I have a long sleeve tee in black, have a chat to Ped
21. Bloodaxe (Pete) could you please dress properly next time?
22.
lmao welcome to the world Crazykiwi, theres so much to see
Yeah, I guess I've only imported into 4 different countries in my life.
23. What JTUK said is more or less true in my experience apart from the preamps. You should firstly decide what sound you want and then search out an instrument that delivers. There are some manufacturers like Lakland who have managed to achieve an incredible level of consistency in their instruments but you won't get much in the way of customisation. If you go to a custom luthier you're more or less at the mercy of their wood pile. Finding a custom luthier who has nailed their wood selection is like finding a needle in a haystack. To have the best of both worlds, find an instrument that gives you the sound and then have it customised. You won't be able to get much back for it in terms of resale value but if its one in a million then its unlikely you will ever need to sell it. This does assume that you will have tried loads of basses before settling on what you're looking for. Whether it has a maple fingerboard or walnut body doesn't really matter at the end of the day. Basses are like a recipe, in that they represent a mix of ingredients. One ingredient can be added or altered in such a way to compensate for the inadequacies of another. Whether you like the flavour is another matter entirely. I've tried loads of basses over the years. The ones that stood out for me were made almost exclusively from maple, but a particular combo of hard and soft maple. So I have a couple of Spectors now but they've been heavily customised to make them sound warmer than standard Spectors.. I also really like graphite necks but haven't found a bass yet which combines low action with warm sound. I'm still working on that one.
