2. Doesn't seem to be a lot of difference in terms of construction between this bass and a Roscoe Century. This seems much better value though. Have a bump on me.
3. Just found this vid which offers a surprisingly clear illustration of how deadspots work. http://www.wimp.com/rubenstube/
4. I've heard these basses can be a little lacking in mids thanks to the Barts, which is why I never bought one. The ones loaded with the Villex system are apparently much better.
5. Respect for the bloke/band who is paying you, even if you think he's/they are a knob. Trust that the bloke/band knows what he/they want and you're there to help him/them get it. Know your role as the bass player and be accommodating. Don't offer unsolicited opinions unless others have run out of theirs or someone asks you for them. Swap stories if they're funny.
6.
There were a couple of changes through the Sabre's lifetime. Early ones had exposed pole pieces on the pickups, but later ones were covered and had a 3 way switch instead of the toggles. The later ones also adopted the stingray bridge of the time:
The reason for that was because they redesigned the neck pickup so that it had 8 smaller pole pieces rather than 4 larger pole pieces. This happened because the neck magnets in earlier models were so strong that they choked the strings. There were also changes to the preamp, including a simpler layout and no series parallel or boost switches. (I owned an 83 Cutlass II.)
7.
Interesting, why would you suggest that?
Because a new neck will sound different. The wood in a new neck won't have had time to get used to the string tension so you'll have a slightly more aggressive sounding instrument...although you may like that of course!
8.
buy a fretless jazz neck and stick it on
+1 get one of the same age however
9. Nothing wrong with a high impedance pickup if it sounds OK to you.
10. Just spotted this spoof newspaper article on the Daily Mash which made me giggle. http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/arts-%2...s-201006092799/
11. congratulations! Take some pics if you can so we can share the experience vicariously...
12.
Noted - the wait's not a problem as I'm quite happily ensconsed in a meaningful relationship with my Roscoe LG3000 at the moment anyway. I'm not in a hurry to 'kick her into touch' and it would proably give me the time to save the money to finance the new bass too. As a matter of interest, how long might a 'long wait' be? I've had to wait a year for a previous bass I ordered from a different luthier before. Cheers
If its a simple build (eg jazz bass) then maybe up to 8 months. If its something more complicated (like mine was) then up to 18 months and longer depending on how much special stuff needs to be ordered, planned or made. His necks are extremely stable and very solid.
13. I like my Shuker a lot, its every bit as good as a Fodera but, like many, I had a long wait. Jon works to his own deadlines for custom work so if you want something special then you'll need to be patient.
14. my version of WMP in Windows 7 will allow this.
15. If I wasn't in NZ, I would have snapped this up by now.
16. A live clip here, same bass patch. You can here the sounds more distinctly. Useless piece of trivia: Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards were the producers on the album.
17. Now I've actually listened to it, I'd suggest a 70's jazz with a pizzicato upright bass synth patch played up an octave over the top of it which drops out for the 'if you say run' bit.
18. Carmine Rojas played bass on that track so its unlikely to be anything synthy. Maybe a fretless P-bass or something?
19.
While you are of course free to set yourself any budget you like, it doesn't mean you'd get one at that price, unless it was damaged or otherwise in poor condition - the one with the headstock damage above being a prime example. You also seem to imply that it's the "bottom of the range" Smith, which I'd dispute. Yes it's simpler and less exotic and therefore reflected in the price, but a new one is still only around 15% "cheaper" than the BSR-GN/EG models that you mention.
er...I'm not implying anything. Any comments or opinions are always going to be subject to market forces.
20. There are loads of reasons why you might have heard what you heard. All I'll say is that I never had any problem getting loads of low end from my Hartke 4.5XL. The bloke you saw might have cut the lows because he was on a boomy stage and couldn't otherwise hear himself yet the sound engineer (if there was one) wasn't compensating through FOH.
21. Personally, I wouldn't pay more than 1200 quid for a used BSR-J. They're nice basses but there are many BSR models between it and the BSR-GN/EG models which top out at roughly 2000 quid used.
22. The orion has a set neck rather than a through neck. That doesn't necessarily mean its lower quality as far as basses generally go either (Jaydees have set necks as a preference because John Diggins claims it reduces deadspots)
