1. The Gallery are selling the bass on behalf of Chris Celinder. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=489710 I know at least one ex-Mark King Jaydee was sold for £5000 through the Bass Centre and that was about 10 years ago.
 2. Peaceful in some respects but not exactly any more crime free than some parts of rural Lincolnshire.
 3. OK, Ped and I discussed the T&C's with the Global Mods and there wasn't a lot of amendments that were necessary apart from this expansion to Section 6. 4. I don't see why a few people are having difficulty over whether its a signature model or not. Like its all that important? Even if it is, some of the critical comments made above could quite easily be made of Fender or other makers offering signature models. Get over it, I say.
 5. I would really liked to have attended this Minus 2 outside when I woke up this morning.
 6.
To be honest, I don't know why anybody would want to trade a Ken Smith in for a Shuker.
Have you owned either?
 7.
Just out of interest and because i am a big gossip, who else famous has he knocked back?
I understand from Jon that Bakithi Kumalo approached him a while back. I don't think I would use the term 'knocked back' but I believe there might have been some limits to how accommodating Jon could be. More than that I'm not going to say on a public forum.
 8. I haven't listened to the recording yet, but I did like the Bedford as a venue a lot. Good memories of my gigs there.
I don't believe any instrument is priced solely based on the production costs of the actual instrument. That would be a recipe for failure.
Not even instruments that are built to meet a specific budget? Such as a Warwick Rockbass?
FWIW I am not sure that instruments are priced on "brand status" either, but rather their pricing ends up reflecting the markets demand for the brand.
So if the difference in on stage sound, looks, playability, workmanship and broad purchase cost between an AC, Celinder and Sadowsky is minimal then what else is there left for the consumer bassist to place value in to create the demand if not brand? Same goes for mid range instruments too BTW. Its an extremely competitive market out there and in the absence of Unique Selling Points, the only thing left to base a sales pitch on is the perception of 'added value', ie. brand status.
 10.
it's like they have been hewn from a piece of granite, completely rigid, very strange.
Not too far from the truth. The design intent has always been to isolate the string from the dampening effects of the wood as much as possible. Hence the use of brass nuts and sustain blocks plus laminate neck construction using ultra dense woods. Its a little unsophisticated by comparison with Ken Smith or Chris Celinder's artisan approaches but the huge sound is what Alembics are famous for and they don't have a cult following for nothing.
 11. http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/hlgal.htm Wey hey! Lovely job. What a gorgeous trio.
 12.
That must be Shuker's first big name then ?
First big name who he hasn't turned down. Hadrien Feraud was making some enquiries too a while back because he wasn't that happy with his signature Fodera.
I like the blocks and the coloured h/stock. Shame it's not a Jazz...
There was a jazz version (in appearance at least) hanging on the wall for a while upstairs. It sounded pretty close to a 70's jazz when I plugged it in.
There is no point asking "where is the extra cost". The extra cost is simply the cost of entry to the club. If you don't see the value in it (however you want to justify that value), then its not the right "club" for you to join. That's cool. For me Alembic and Fodera are clubs I am not keen on joining for that very reason, but I have bought basses that cost just as much. Each to their own.
Unfortunately there is that aspect to bass pricing these days with the higher brands. Pricing on the base of brand status rather than the production costs of actual instrument is not something I personally agree with because it sets a precedent for other manufacturers and just makes us all the more cynical as consumers. But, given AC are low volume instruments, then let the market decide. We're all free agents and spend our money as we please and someone can appear to be a mug for spending over the odds as much as they can appear to be of good taste. It's a cunning pricing strategy for a luthier who doesn't want to end up like Chris Celinder or Jon Shuker with waiting lists years long. For that money though, I could take lessons and learn to make the instruments myself from well seasoned wood, as some BCers have already.
 14. With that serial I'm wondering if it might be a prototype or the first amp of the production run. Probably the wrong time to be selling if you want the top price for it, but its probably going to be of great interest to anyone with some surplus cash and an interest in getting a V-head. If it was me, I wouldn't let it go for less than £1200, someone somewhere is bound to be willing to pay that. If not in the UK then almost certainly in Europe where they're a little less price sensitive if the gear is right. Have you opened it up and checked for writing on the PCB inside? I don't know if the 6550's are what the head was designed for but my V8 has KT88's in it. 6550's can tend to sound a little grindy as anyone playing an SVT at full tilt will know.
 15. I'd just add that, although my experience about losing bass using the tiltback doesn't necessarily tie in, losing bass on small and/or hollow stages isn't necessarily a bad thing if the acoustics are boomy. In fact I liked my GK RB700's for that reason if anything. Losing the mud made them clearer.
 16.
I think you should just let me cyber-spank anyone who is naughty!
Or both?
 17.
I'm thinking specifically about vendettas against mods, failure to 'agree to disagree'. Will the guidelines be amended and / or strengthened, maybe by an appropriate reference in the T&C's?
Hi Skank, the main change will address that point. But the T&C's could probably benefit from a general review anyway to see if there's any way in which we can make them simpler to read but still relevant. Hopefully I will do this by the end of the week, subject to any comments from the Global Mods (who will be using them as support for their decisions).
 18. BBC iPlayer is blocked outside the UK because non-UK residents don't pay a TV license fee. So I can't see it.
 19.
The Alleva I have is probably the most "alive" instrument that I've personally owned and this translates into it's plugged in sound, so whatever Jimmy Coppolo's formula is I think it definitely works.
Thats the key benefit from a well crafted instrument. If the woods are selected and well matched, the instrument should feel alive. No dead spots, the whole instrument is rigid and each note jumps off the fingerboard. But even the wood from the same tree can sound different depending on what part of the trunk its come from. There's no reliable way to distinguish the best wood from adequate wood apart from experience. It's the acid test of a craftsman who can pick and match the woods that give rise to this quality. There are many similarities with violins in that respect I guess. BTW, I contacted a supplier of the ancient swamp kauri that was used in that guitar I posted earlier. They want $6500 (£2500) a cubic metre for the most dramatically grained stuff because there's only a limited supply.
 20.
very nice indeed, loving that bodyshape
+1 that body shape has some nice lines.
 21. I went for JJ's in the end because the Genalex were too pricey. I have the KT77's in all the Burmans. Still have the Ruby's in the V8 though.
 22. nice purchase Steve, any sound clips in the pipeline?
