ROCK BAND FROM TORONTO LOOKING FOR BASSIST!!!!!!!
Kiwi replied to johnnaro's topic in Musicians Wanted
Toronto's a bit far for a 16-year old to travel on a regular basis.
Llllllllllluxury! Youth o'today don't know how lucky they ahr. In maah day, we would've travelled t'stralia 'n' back just for extra XLR cable... -
I've played quite a few used stingrays and found them to be on the whole very consistent machines through the 80's to the mid 90's. I tried a used SR5 at the Gallery and found the classic stingray growl albeit slightly less thick than on the 4 string model. I also tried a new HH SR5 in another visit and wasn't impressed at all, particularly with how gutless the neck pickup was. I also found on the SR HS models there were problems with noise interference in some coil settings. So I don't know what to make of that really. I hope they aren't cutting corners in QC and design.

Hi Dan Welcome aboard - how are you coping with the cultural differences?

I think my gear is about OK for me. I have just enough instruments and no more, the stuff is good sounding brands that will sell on easily and (apart from the Shuker) none of it is particularly flashy in appearance. I have more amps than I need, for sure but there's an intended use for all of them bar one perhaps. I was out of my depth with a Ken Smith BSR6GN that I bought in 2004 but now I have the Shuker 6, I feel less out of my depth than back then so I dunno...its all stuff I can grow into maybe? At the moment I have quite a bit of MIDI gear to learn how to use and that's keeping me gainfully occupied. It took me 6 months to learn how to use my Lexicon MPXG2 so I'm anticipating years for some of this kit...and I have a bit of re-learning with Pro Tools as well now.
Big hollow stages don't help, either - Too much boom. Wherever possible, make sure your cab/combo is making good contact with the floor, ie. not on an amp stand or on wheels.
If you allow your cab to acoustically couple with a hollow stage, the stage can act like a resonance chamber which is what causes the extra boominess. By isolating the cab from the hollow stage, you can control the lows a lot better with the benefit that your sound can have more focus. Also, if your cab is rear ported then by putting it up against a wall, it also helps reduce boom.
it can be heard onstage without being too loud, and the sound gets thickened up a bit by the PA so sounds ace out front.
To add to that point, I've found myself actually competing with the FOH PA at times. Our sound engineer tended to cane the low frequencies quite a bit, at least until the subs overheated and failed a few times.

Bassist Are VERY Conservative in what they want from a bass
Kiwi replied to Spoombung's topic in General Discussion
And in most cases, changing back again because we didn't like/need it.
and the rest of it... ...then changed to a valve amp, then changed their speaker from a 4x10 to a pair of 2x10s, then tried a compressor, then changed to a solid state amp and then changed back to a radical design again because they were bored with a traditional design, then changed their speaker to a lightweight 2x12, then sold the compressor for a sonic maximiser, then changed back to a traditional design because their band preferred it and then changed their speakers to a pair of 1x12's... -
Not as loud as yer VBA's or the big modern Fender, but cheaper to buy, easier to service and cheaper to re-valve. Flip-tops are lovely too, but again, not as loud as yer VBA / Fender 300.
Vintage gear tends to operate at vintage levels of power. 100w should be enough for a pub gig, and if more volume is needed then more speakers will help.

Might be worth considering a Fender Bassman head, especially if you can pair it with a sensitive cab. They're quite smooth sounding. Alternatively you could go for an Ampeg B15R Portaflex fliptop reissue. Very different to SVT heads and Jamerson used to play through one.

The laser lens probably needs recalibrating, did you get it looked at by a tech at all? It would be an easy fix.
-
how about using a set of in ear monitors? might save on the back ache too.

That rig is extremely tasty but utterly insane I like it a lot! The drill is a nice nod to Paul Gilbert too. Wouldn't want to be your roadie though. Have you not been tempted by some of the Line 6 modelling stuff then?
Smart - a scale model of a guitar amp ;-)
I've got it running on one EL34 at the moment (25w or so) and its still too bloody loud.
That explains the new avatar - it didn't look like a Pro 4000 to me.
There was a logo change at some point, the Pro4000 head I sold you and my mint head both have a sans serif logo. The earlier Pro4000 I have has got the script logo like the Pro501. But yes, that logo in my avatar is off the guitar combo.
6? Eurotubes has JJ Teslas at $18 plus shipping, BnB Tubes on ebay seem to be able to beat that. Pretty good. What are these Genelex Golden Lions - are they a remake of the original KT77 Golden Lions as fitted to later Burmans?
I believe they are, but whether the price difference between the Genelex and the JJ is justified in terms of sound quality I couldn't say. 6 tubes - four for one of the bass heads, two for the Pro501 I now own.
Don't think there's really a cheaper alternative to just buying the cheapest EL34's you can find really. I've just put some Genelex KT77's in my old Laney though and they really are special. Can't wait to burn them in a bit more. Worth the extra. That was just for two though, not sure if I could have afforded six of them.
+1, I tried a pair of the Gold Lion KT77's instead of EL34's in my recently acquired Burman guitar combo this afternoon and it absolutely nailed the sound I've been looking for. Fat, punchy and sparkly like a Fender combo but with more mids. The EL34's were muffled and tonally inadequate by comparison.

Sharay Reed: There's noone else who better epitomises what I would like to do with the instrument myself.
Sounds good to me. Am quite happy to field more general questions about cabs like Dave Hall does on the amps side of things.
OK well I'll talk to Ped about it and potentially we could stick your forum alongside Dave's.

Hotrox now charges for shipping making them less competitive than before. I'm planning on sourcing the 6 KT77's I'm looking to buy off Ebay.

What made you the bassist you are today? A life long addition to grooves. Who do you think had the biggest influences on how you play now? Mark King in the late 80's, Bernard Edwards, Gene Perez, James Jamerson and Julian Crampton. Most recently I've discovered Sharay Reed and I'm still trying to explore Meshell Ndegeocello's approach. Where do you think you want to go from here? Sharay Reed and Martin Taylor Why do you think you want to go there? Apparently I do, but I couldn't tell you what that is. All I know are the comments and the reactions. Specialist question: What is it you love about that 1971 P-Bass? Its a leading question so I'm not going to respond.
Find me a couple of dozen other bassists who want one and I'll design one! Otherwise you'll have to wait until I get my larger wedge stage monitor sorted.
A thaw at least. And the prospect of a "larger wedge stage monitor" is encouraging. Any specs? Also, can you make me two inside 5 weeks?
If you build it they will come. Would we just lift this entire thread over there? Could we work out a way of subdividing this thread into a few logical chronological sections to make it easier for browsing? Alex
If we lifted the thread to a group where you were mod, you could chop it up to your hearts content.
