Do you have the V4 head mate? If so, I'm a bit surprised that you don't have 2 channels and a preamp gain and preamp volume on the second channel. I've been well impressed with the rawness of the Danelectro FAB tone pedal. I'm not sure if thats the kind of grit you're after though.
(Will people GET OVER THAT as well)
Sure, if the criticism bothers you then just write and play something that will shut them up. If you can't walk the walk, don't talk the talk. In the meantime I think you should get over it. Most mature players learn to stay within their limitations and, like Amy Winehouse and her singing technique, they make the most of what they have. Limitations can add distinctiveness, just look at Jamerson and his hook. But thats off-topic and the rest of the membership has probably had enough of your 9 string rants already I suspect. I wonder if Jeff's problem is that he cares too much about what he does and loses perspective sometimes? I've seen the same thing happen in my own band with a certain individual.

this has been covered before, I remember writing a lengthy post on it. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=21840

Im not important enough for anyone to endorse, and even if I did endorse anything I'd have to publicise myself which I'm not that comfortable with TBH. Its not like my playing represents any kind of example to others. Anyway, I'd much rather pay for something I liked rather than get something free that I didn't like. However if companies want to chuck stuff at me simply because of my forum prowness, then who am I to refuse...? I won't be checking my mail box tomorrow in anticipation though. Heheheh.

Fair enough I guess but to play devils advocate, are you not painting him with your own prejudices against fusion when he's also branched into rock and jazz? I think your points about craft could probably stand on their own merits regardless of style.
Hi Tim, Yes all 5 string for the time being at least! Thanks for the comments. Celinders are great I agree - If anyone has a 5 string Celinder to trade that would be of interest! Steve
On the few places I know they become available, they get snapped up at almost any price.

Bilbo thats one of the most interesting critiques of Jeff's playing that I've ever read. In some respects it sounds like you're painting him in a very ironic context.

hi samuel, I've seen you posting a bit. welcome on board.

No gig this weekend! I still ended up going to a BBQ at the percussionists house and jamming until 2am with other musicians who weren't in the band....
I wouldnt change him for the world. He's an atypical brash New Yorker, and I love him for that, where I live they are the same...Straight up ,honest.....hard working people.
Unless you're trying to buy some pain killers in a 5 and dime store when one of the cash registers breaks down and it takes 4 of the check out chicks to supervise the other one sorting it out, leading to queues out the door. And noone's prepared to speak out just in case someone else pulls a gun... ...and you can walk down any street and witness a homeless person screaming and lashing out at a traffic barrier to stop harrassing him, to the amusement of a nearby mounted cop. And a sales person behind a counter in an electrical hardware shop refuses to sell anything to a clean cut, yet decidedly straight friend of mine because they "don't sell to faggots." Yet you can buy some of the most amazing steaks anywhere on the planet and there is no end to a cocktail barmans inventiveness. Nooo Yawk - its my favourite US city for the sheer variety alone.

Everyone taking notes? "Chordal", "note orientated fashion", and lets not think about the Peavey Palaedium Jeff Berlin model that looks almost identical (and actually was a fantastic instrument even by today's standards) Don't know about you but I'm getting the impression that his mouth is playing slightly ahead of his brain in this clip. and to cut Jeff some slack, respect to him for having an admirable level of self awareness. "Was your attitude and determination a product of your upbringing? Yes. Both of my parents had tough upbringings. My father is a Holocaust survivor who twice escaped death sentences, and my mother endured her share of problems. As a result, much of their pain was passed on to me and my siblings. My problem was I couldn't relate to people--they were the enemy. I was uptight, angry, and competitive, and that came through in my playing and my attitude. Throughout the '70s and '80s, I paid a great price for lacking social skills; it cost me work, and it cost me friends. It wasn't until the '90s that I underwent intensive therapy to sort things out and make peace with myself and the rest of the world. I realize now that had I related better to people, my entire history might have been re-written. But that's 20/20 hindsight." http://www.keyboardmag.com/article/jeff-berlin/jan-98/5930
I still want to start a "Basschat Steve Club" Im a Stephen, and ive messaged five steves in the last two weeks!
On Bassworld, we ran a poll for the most common first name and Steve was a winner by a long way. I think we had about 9 Steves then, but it might have changed since. In my experience, making generalisations about any culture is iffy, particularly in the case of the USA. Some people have a hard time getting to grips with the overwhelming diversity of the place. I've stated that I don't generally like American culture but I also count a number of Americans as my friends. I even worked (briefly) for an American company this year and met all sorts from the very self centred to the selfless. As an aside, I don't think any country or culture has a monopoly on assholes, they crop up everywhere. Probably the country I've had greatest difficulty with is England. People are too quick to judge, they jump to conclusions too easily, can be complacent to the point of apathy, can be cold and distant, blah blah. Having said that, most of my experience has been in the south where I was born...
He's a wicked player, and a nice bloke too. He's one of these irritating (in a good way) people who can play loads of different instruments, and play them well.
FWIW, I remember he and Steve Lawson both seemed to rub some people up the wrong way on this forum and Bassworld.
Never really thought about the Shuttle. Reading about all the availability problems and comments about their sound - 'nasal' seems to crop up a bit. I like the sound of the 750 on Basstasters and as I'm just off to Brum for the day - I may give Mark a call en route and leave the missus shopping in Brum while I demo a few amps assuming Mark's about today.
Well I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. All I'll say is that I've spent the last week running all my basses including the Alembic, Celinder J, Celinder P (with flats), Musicman Stingray, Cutlass 1 and Cutlass 2 and both Smiths. So I probably have a reasonable idea about how the amp responds to each type of bass. If someone is used to playing an Ashdown then yes the Shuttle is probably going to sound nasal to them, especially if they have a nasal sounding bass. I've found a tighter sounding head works better for me on small stages with the warm basses I play. I've gigged the Shuttle and it doesn't sound any less legible on stage than my Trace V8! You can definitely make the Shuttle sound warm with the Celinder P if you want to using the mid scoop and low boost feature. Trying some out at Marks place is exactly what I did, I recommend you take your cab and #1 bass with you so you can make a direct comparison.
-
Al, is there something about the GB750 which you prefer over say the Shuttle 6.0? I know the Shuttle doesn't go to 2ohms which is a bit of a bugger for me but I'd only then need to carry a second 4ohm cab anyway which kind of defeats the object of having a light weight rig... ...I suspect if the GB Neopak and Shuttle sound pretty similar, theres a chance the GB750 will be consistent too. The Mark Bass heads I played were clear and slightly warmer than the Neopak, however I thought the midrange was firmer and better defined in the Neopak. There wasn't a lot in it tbh, deciding whether to use a neo cab or not might make the differences negligible to most people. I decided to go for a neo cab and the Shuttle because the Smith likes an amp with firm mid-range.

In theory, if someone was prepared to go to the place where the instruments were stored and collect, it could work. Similar thing already operates with super car clubs. You pay an annual subscription fee plus a booking fee and agree to get the car back in the same condition as it left. However there's no accounting for the recklessness of some people.

I've A/B'd a Genz NeoPak and a MB LM1 and F1 if thats of any relevance?
If anybody else has one for a reasonable price, I'm interested. Been talking with Ped but I think he wants to hang on to his.
Strikes me as overpriced bling for peoplle with more money than sense...
Welcome to the world of new Alembic Series bass owners. the flamed mahogany is a good score, well done sir! What about the neck? I hope you've asked for it to be as stiff as they can make it. I tried a couple of W&T basses at Bass Direct which varied significantly in terms of sustain and attack. But there's no accounting for taste I guess.
