LMAO Best intro thread ever! My face is still aching. Now who the f*** are you?
they suit EVERY kind of music - looks and tone, they play beautifully, balance well and do exactly what it says on the tin - no messing, no faffing - affordable, well made, well designed, non pretentious basses.
I think they have a big ol scooped-mid sound and I can't hear them properly on stage compared to my Stingray/Cutlass. They're also highly variable in quality, there's never telling what one is like until you pick it up. At every price point in the Fender Jazz range you can find some dogs and some gems. That might even be part of the appeal I guess? Give me a stingray or a P-bass any day though. They may not be as versatile but they do, they do better than a jazz. *HIDES*

Personally I've found the Cirrus a little dead sounding. If I had the inclination I would probably go for a Toby Pro 6 and swap out the pickups and circuitry.
Basically alot of people have a problem with Jeff,Because he's right.
I think a lot of people have a problem with Jeff because he's sometimes right, but sometimes quite mistaken, and often in the same sentance!

Where would you say MOST of your sound comes from?
You're all compl-e-t-e-ly wrong. I get my sound out of my cabs. I checked, I put my ears next to them and it's definitely the cabs. I then tried putting my fingers in my ears and got no sound at all, not one chuffing note, so I definitely don't get my sound from my fingers. I now have earwax on my strings and they sound dead. Would using Elixirs help?
lmao -
Yeah Kiwi had a Buzz and it truly did sing its little heart out! I think my MVP was an '87 too... Good luck with the sale mate ped
I still have a Pentabuzz. Truly amazing fretless. I had an MVP too, but sold it because I couldn't get it to sound the same as the Pentabuzz. Hmmmm. Maybe I needed to remove the frets.
4 weeks He told me that his build time was 12 - 20 weeks when I put down my deposit... on the 6th November... that makes it 37 weeks by my count! To say I can't wait to get my hands on it is an understatement! Jon's a great guy to deal with, but his timing estimates leave a bit to be desired!
I think I commissioned my bass around the same time as you did. Jon told me 5 months, but this was before he got flooded, and before he had to move workshop. It also took about 3 months to get the inlay sorted. Draw your own conclusions, but its not untypical for luthiers to work to their own timelines and completely undermine any assurances they've given beforehand. For my other little headless project in partnership with Jon, I'm minimising Jon's input as much as possible (while also making sure he's still sweet). If any of you have bolt on bodies made in the future, chances are they will been rough shaped on Jon's CNC machine, based on the programme of instructions I will be preparing.

This week 'oi 'as an odd hankering for a...
actually been looking at getting a sat nav for getting to gigs.
I just got one last week specifically because I had to face a hellish drive back from Shepherds Bush from Greenwich late last week. Don't know how I ever managed without it! It was more expensive than printing out endless maps from RAC route planner but its so nice to be able to just get in the car and drive off without a facing a major trip planning exercise. This week I was gassing over an Akai Headrush E2 until I remembered that I actually had a looper in my MPXG2... ...then I started gassing over Bassjamm's F-bass and in fact wanting a back up 5 string fretted in general (I have two fretless 5s but only 1 fretted 5, go figure?!) But that's not exactly a cheap item... ...and hopefully my Shuker Custom MIDI 6 will be finished next month. Hey I could actually use that instead of the Smith 5 at gigs in the future and not need the F-bass at all. -
Bernie's opinion and backed up by his not rolling in money and not being able to use his own name.
OK, I'd suggest the passage might need modification so its clear this is Bernie's opinion.
The photos would be stored at the flickr website so anyone could easily upload to their own flickr account. The actual viewer could embedded within basschat and use the same colour scheme and theme as basschat...with the basschat moderators permission of course. In short, it could look and behave like a part of basschat, with storage at flickr.
Well, there's probably some merit to that suggestion if there's visual consistency. As far as my own personal preference goes, I'd probably prefer to have as much content tucked inside Basschat as possible. How much information and anecdotal background could be attached to the images? Would the images/associated text help Basschat's search engine rankings or Flickrs?
-
The categories section is currently a predefined keyword search - click on the Wal category. In theory, I could add an upload feature that allows you to tag photos with our predefined words - i.e. drop down lists for manufacturer, model, colour....I could then build this into the search.
Would this be embedded within the wiki or within flickr's own database?

Just a point: "Not to be confused with Goodfellow basses that may have been handmade by Bernie or may have been mass produced by Lowden after they ripped Bernie off" Is this a fact or your opinion?
I was wondering if this barky/grunty tone was typical of Wal basses?
Your Smith BSR5 had a barky grunt, my friend. I think Wals and Smiths are very similar in general character although there are subtle differences. the Trace and Peavey stuff is fairly coloured. Whether you like that is a question of taste but often what sounds good on the stage is different to what sounds good in a shop. Have a look in the Basschat Marketplace for alternatives that are in your price range perhaps? I'm expecting to go from headed to headless. I've played headless numerous times and in terms of instrument balance its a considerable improvement if you play 5 or more stringed instruments.
