1. LOL I can't believe you're selling this. Are you insane?
2.
I did the same thing. The singer in my old band got us a booking at a specials school's end of year party. We turned up and played our set (during which many of the students wandered on stage to hand us half eaten bits of food etc) Then at the end they came and asked us to 'play something sexy' for the fashion show the students were putting on. The band looked at me so I played a slow funky line a bit like the one the band play in from dusk till dawn. We found it hard to finish as we were all laughing so hard at all the kids walking the wrong direction or just standing in the middle of the 'catwalk'. It was very rewarding though and a lot of fun.
We have one coming up next week for special needs kids, Downs Syndrome I think. Its a charity thing so we're doing it for nothing but unfortunately I can't make it. Shame really, they're very entertaining when they dance and they're having a good time as well which is what its all about for us.
3.
Was I right? Is that all? I was hoping, at the very least, to have won one of CK's Musicmans?????? Let me guess, a bumper sticker, mug and signed Basschat t-shirt?
LOL, nice try. If you're in the vicinity of West London, you're certainly welcome to pop around and have a go on them. But yes, its the Gherkin. The load in is going to be very interesting - mostly via express lifts I suspect. How about a free jar of advocado hummous instead?
4. God, I have some stories. Luckily we usually have pretty classy punters, the sort where I don't worry too much about leaving gear unsupervised. Worst venue was this one: http://www.thewappingproject.com/ I've been there already in the past for some corporate events but we had a couple of lawyers who wanted to book us for their wedding at this place. The lady who runs it is very particular about how she likes to do things and we couldn't use the raised plinth in the centre because she said it was used for tables. (This is a private booking, mind so the restaurant area is essentially being booked out completely). Instead we were each expected to stand on the bits of machinery and balconies like museum exhibits. How we were expected to hear ourselves and how we were expected to compensate for the cave like acoustics wasn't at all clear. We said to the clients that the only way we could make this work was by hiring a completely wireless, in ear monitoring set up which would also require us to get custom molds fitted for everyone so that we could hear ourselves. Plus there were health and safety concerns if we were at risk of falling off the machinery for one reason or another. We ended up refunding their deposit in the end because out of good conscience we didn't feel that the gig was going to be a success, even if they'd coughed up for the in ear monitoring. However, we're playing this place in a couple of weeks time which will probably be the most fantastic and stunning venue we've played yet - any guesses? No cheating now!

Heads Up!

sure, if it involves direct links. I'll change the name of the forum to online auctions if necessary
6. Our 'manager' aka the percussionist has been very harsh and defensive in his emails to me recently which has upset me. I just disagree with him about what normal, successful 4-5 piece function bands can get away with charging. He went off the deep end and took that as a criticism of what he's charging out the band at. It bears little relationship to what our band charges because we're bigger and I thought that was already clear. He also says he is trying to protect the singers against a threat he thinks I pose to the stability of the band when there the singers are probably quite capable of protecting themselves (especially with what we went through with the previous band). I'm not so sure, from what the singers say, that such a threat actually exists. Business wise he's doing a superb job, but our band is seems increasingly less like a partnership and more like a benevolent dictatorship where the percussionist decides what's going to happen and defends that decision against comment from others. EDIT: He's just apologised, the world is good again.
7.
The bass playing was great because the guy was not slappin. As I said a really great groove, not all bass lines have to involve slappin.
I didn't like the groove at all I didn't say all bass lines have to involve slapping So there therefore I think: BRING BACK THE SLAPPING!
8.
Cue a pic from CrazyKiwi....?
Ahem! Sorry for being late Sir! Pics duly supplied: Status MM neck (woven fabric) MM Cutlass neck (similar woven fabric) Alembic Series 1 graphite (lots of chopped strands) Modulus "Thousand Ladies Dancing" Moses neck (mostly resin, designed to sound like maple) Of course the outer appearance is not necessarily an indicator of how the neck has been built inside. As I've stated in other threads, the big issue with the Musicman Cutlass necks and the Modulus fretless bass I owned was the lack of a rigid fingerboard. The phenolic resin recipe used on some of the necks was critical to their rigidity.
9. Bring back the slapping from the original track!
10. Oh yes, Jon was cutting back the finish while I was there last week. He's particularly impressed with the rich colour of those blue tints. The pics really don't do it justice.
11. I switched to bass from drums after getting injured wrists playing high school volleyball. Got the local multi instrumentalist teacher to show me the basics of bass and then I left him after a few months and went to a specialist bass teacher. Ironically, my first lesson with him was the week that Jaco died and he opened my eyes up to Jaco, Mark King, Stanley Clarke, Flea etc. The rest of the time I was just jamming with other musicians, I've never really had specialist lessons since then - it probably shows! lol
12. I've asked Jon for the mono rail units - same as used by Status. Are they made by ABM? I've also asked him where the onboard tuner is going! (Can't see any allowance for it in the top horn yet - hope it hasn't been forgotten!)
13. New pics at last! Taken by myself on Friday while Jon was teaching me how to refret my guitar neck. Its roughly shaped and already feels great for ergonomics, although it seems a little heavier than Johngh's. Perhaps because of the heavy mahogany body wings? You can see the chambering in the top wing already. The bass has matching control cavity covers cut from the rear facing for the back and the electric blue LED's are fully functional too!
14. lol Looks like a story that you can dine out on for years!
15. If compression was already on the amp, a pitch shifter. That would give me a detune chorus and octaves.
16. I've found myself going from thin neck profiles to chunky profiles because of the cramping issue on my left hand. The neck I cramped on most was a super slim Modulus Quantum neck. It felt like the angle of my fingers was too shallow and my muscles got tired very easily. I get less cramping on more substantial necks and it feels like my fingers are at a more natural angle in relation to my palm. Because I don't have hitchhikers thumbs, my right hand has to pivot more to reach the upper strings on a 5 or 6 string bass (or I use the floating thumb technique). So narrow spacing at the bridge is comfortable as well, something like 17mm because it means less reach with my fingers.
17. blimey - cracking rig, nearly identical to mine and a great price!
18. someone could pair this with Platypus's 1x15UL and have a stonker of a cab set up.
19. Heh, you're within walking distance of me too.
20. is it one of them green carpeted ones? got any pics?
21. I'm not even going to go there. It's hard enough keeping it down to 9 as it is.
22. this bloke plays like a guitarist too. and this bloke
23.
I'll simply post links to what was said here and reference them. I'll go and quickly edit out what could be seen as defamation. Do you think this is okay? I've tried to be as factual as possible.
Ideally this is the sort of thing you should be taking up offline, don't forget this IS a publically viewable forum and Basschat ranks fairly high in search engines for many bass related terms. I've edited the quote so just the facts remain, but it might be worth having a word to Syed (The Funk) too. I'm a little out of my depth on this one.
24.
Do we have a boycott on our hands. I've been spreading the message to other forums.
I suggest you be very careful about how you do that if I were you. There's a thing called defamation that can be applied if you're making any untrue claims about them.
25. Are they relying on court settlements as a source of income?! I've never heard of such a litigious company! EDIT: I think some of the demands made by Monster Cable's lawyers are outrageous!
