NY Port Authority to Alberqueque on the Greyhound bus because I wanted to get an impression of scale the US as a country. Turned out to be a real road trip with runaway lesbian teens, fights, near road accidents and some interesting characters. After getting screwed over by an unscrupulous car hire company in Santa Fe and being near dead with exhaustion after being woken up every 4 hours by a driver change, I stayed with friends in Santa Fe (again more stories). Then another friend came out from LA in his campervan and we took a tiki tour of Mesa Verde, Grand Canyon, Four Corners, Hoover Dam and Las Vegas. Then I went to stay with a distant cousin who was then a TV presenter on a nationally syndicated entertainment show. Wouldn't have done it any other way apart from trying to get New Orleans in as well, but I wouldn't like to repeat parts of it either. Re: basses, Consider a limited edition Stingray 4 or 5 from Bass Central is good value if you want to buy and have someone you can ship it to a used Sadowsky is good value if you want to buy a lightweight amp head Try: Smith BSR bass (like mine), Alembics, Sadowskys, Avella Coppolo, Roscoe, Nordstrand, etc. etc., just have a look at some of the GAS lists on Talkbass

Last quote we gave was for a gig in Dubai on New Years, which we asked £5k plus expenses (flights, accommodation, food, backline hire etc.). We're still waiting to hear back but they didn't dismiss us out of hand.

We play this one in my band, its a great song if you can pull the bassline back behind the beat far enough and there's plenty of room for some tasty high speed fills at the end of sections. I think Jermaine Jackson played bass for the Jackson 5 but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. It feels like a p-bass or variant thereof to me, but the tone does sound very consistent across the neck for a straight recording. I wonder if its been heavily compressed? There's a youtube clip I've just found here with some really bad camera work - possibly an early bootleg? I'm not sure if its Jermaine playing but its definitely a greasy p-bass. I've got one of their live DVD's, Verdine looks quite funny on stage to me. Like a collection of arms, legs and springy ladies hair connected to a highly mobile bass.

Thing for me about Abba's songs is that the melodies and chord structures and sequences are so rich and cleverly integrated that its possible to come up with some very interesting improvised bass lines while still underpinning the songs. I haven't heard Julian playing with Incognito yet. I was lined up to take lessons from him at one point but he got a tour at the last minute and had to back out. I like Randy Hope Taylors playing too but Julian is a little more flamboyant to my ears perhaps.

Stuart Clayton has written a transription book full of tasty nuggets about Bernard. If you're into disco, its worth also checking out contemporary players like Julian Crampton with the Sunburst band and Joey Negro, and Gene Perez who has done quite a few NY house sessions. I'm also a long time fan of Rutger Gunnarsson who did the bass AND wrote the brass parts for Abba. Still one of the most under rated 70's players in my opinion, he should be up there with Bernard.

I see, I've changed the title. I'm still not clear on what the difference is between a classic and an update P though. Is it just the active eq? Even if it was designed to emulate a 60's bass, it totally fits the bill for 70's disco and funk. I'm not going to lose sleep over the difference if its just a matter of a preamp.

He scored a Cutlass 1 off Ebay in the middle of last year so also has the pair. Only his are both in matching black. I quite like the white, its a bit different and I have another black bass anyway. BTW, Steve Turner played with my band a few weeks back at the Dorchester. He mentioned that he knows you.
